Do you think? Obviously I can find this out once they go back in a few days.

But last year my kids schools and other schools didn't have the heating on and windows/doors open for ventilation. Which I totally get there's a reason for!

Poor Dd really suffered. She feels the cold. She has joint issues and the cold doesn't help. This is specified in her EHCP which she has for other reasons too.

Despite this they sat her right by the door/window (literally right by it, couldn't get any closer to the cold!). She would wear 3 layers, tights etc but she'd still be cold and stiff after school. I had to suggest her being moved but I felt guilty as another child would have to swap with her and they would then feel the cold then!

It was so hard!

Hopefully it won't be too cold for a couple months at least!

Still very warm where I live atm.

You know that classrooms are boiling in the summer too, Petey, can you fix that for us as well?

MrsHamlet · 06/09/2021 17:11

I'm neither defeatist, insulted or moaning. And the heating in my school wasn't off. The fact remains that in schools with radiators, they might have decided to keep the heating off to save money since they had to have the windows and doors open.

Peteycat · 06/09/2021 17:11

Probably go public with the ridiculous situation of cold classrooms. Remove their children until it was turned on. Speak to the LA.

AuditAngel · 06/09/2021 17:12

Please ask them to move her, my DD would swap. She is permanently like a furnace and cries because she is too hot.

A child who doesn’t have her health issues would suffer less in that seat.

MrsHamlet · 06/09/2021 17:12

"Go public in schools have no money shocker"

😂 😂 😂 😂
Peteycat · 06/09/2021 17:16

Laugh all you like. I don't just care what any one on here says. It's a joke if the children are cold. It wouldn't happen and didn't happen where I live. Wouldn't be tolerated 😂.

Peteycat · 06/09/2021 17:16

Mrs Hamlet, it's nothing to do with money!! 😂 It's to do with covid!!

noblegiraffe · 06/09/2021 17:18

It is a joke, Petey, the state of schools, but the idea that it will be solved by speaking up about it when this government doesn't give the shiniest shit about the state of schools is an even bigger joke.

mumsneedwine · 06/09/2021 17:20

😂😂😂😂😂 schools have no money and are badly heated or too hot because windows don't open really is such a shocker.
Maybe we should strike about it as that would show how much we care about the kiddies. I nearly passed out from the reek of Lynx from year10 today - I think COVID will have either got turned on or run a mile from the over powering whiff of teenage boy.

mumsneedwine · 06/09/2021 17:24

Anyone seen the legendary CO2 monitors yet ? Taking bets when they arrive - by next September if ever I reckon.

noblegiraffe · 06/09/2021 17:25

Don't think they've even got a supplier for them yet.

mumsneedwine · 06/09/2021 17:30

@noblegiraffe sure one of their friends who runs a pub will be first in line for the contract.

noblegiraffe · 06/09/2021 17:33

Maybe one of the ones who made shit PPE can make some shit CO2 monitors.

Howshouldibehave · 06/09/2021 17:36

@Peteycat

Put it this way. If I had 30 kids freezing in a classroom,no one would stop me turning on the heating and keeping them warm. So, you can make this as political as you like, but believe me, I would do what I thought was right.
What would you do if you had no means to control the room’s heating from your classroom?
GrandmaSteglitszch · 06/09/2021 17:37

I may try buy her some thermal tights or leggings or something. Sure they can't say no to warm leggings under skirts if she's cold and they match the uniform??

Find out beforehand about the heating and ventilation.
If it's as cold as last year, inform the school that you will dress her in whatever you think is best for her, regardless of uniform.

It's cruelty to insist on a uniform that is not suitable for the conditions.

I'd favour fingerless gloves, so she can still use pencils etc, and warm boots as well as warm clothes.

loopylindi · 06/09/2021 17:39

To all parents whose children feel the cold in their hands. Go to Lakeland and look at the Hotrox. It's a little egg shaped thing that you can charge from a USB socket. It has 2 heat settings and on the lower one it would probably last most of the school day. Absolutely brilliant.
FOY polyester is not a warm fabric. You want things that are knitted /interlock so they hold little pockets of air. Polyester is a man made fabric with fibres that are smooth and shiny so they slide over each other and don't hold the heat. If the child's uniform is Polyester, and most are these days, try to get the child to wear a cami top under the blouse. This will tuck into the waistband and retain heat.

Greystray · 06/09/2021 18:00

Wait - girls were still expected to wear skirts?! What were tights going to do? They should have been in thermal leggings at the very least. Jesus...

The point I'm making is this wasn't a 'thing' before Covid. This is yet again another way of cost cutting exercises under the guise of 'covid rules'. I don't accept it. The staff do have the means to turn it on. All of them.

Peteycat · 06/09/2021 18:08

The goverment might not give a shit but clearly everyone on here does. So if they are penny pinching then they should be exposed. I'm sure many of you have tried to highlight things before, but the more people shout and get involved the better. You may think that I'm naive and I don't understand. I do. I'm just appalled that children in some schools are left to be cold. It's like we are going backwards instead of forwards.

Peteycat · 06/09/2021 18:10

To all the posters being rude to me, just remember that I'm only caring about the children. I'm not insulting anyone or having a personal attack. I just can't sit here and accept this shit anymore.

noblegiraffe · 06/09/2021 18:11

You are acting as if you are the only one who cares about the children, Petey

mumsneedwine · 06/09/2021 18:15

@Peteycat schools have been too cold and too hot for decades. I don't have access to the boiler room so can't turn the heating on or off. Today I was baking in a room with v v limited ventilation. The same room will be freezing by December as the windows, while not shutting properly, also do not seal well. I have been known to have 25 Bunsen burners going to try and warm up.
If you care so much please do what you can as teachers are a bit busy at the moment.

Wolfiefan · 06/09/2021 18:25

I’ve been out of teaching a few years. But my last classroom alternated between bloody cold and boiling. The skylights had been ripped off the corridor in stormy weather. They had screwed some wood over the holes. Water came in. Soaked carpet. Meant we couldn’t have lights on in the corridor.
Not COVID.
Just cash strapped.

Peteycat · 06/09/2021 19:25

No, I've tried to be kind and said I'm sure many of you tried to highlight. I am not acting like I'm the only one who cares. Just because you may work in a school doesn't mean that others who don't can't have an opinion.

Mumsneedwine, lots of people are always busy. If you want to you find the time. Being a teacher doesn't mean you can't do anything else!
