To think friend is being really selfish

We are in Cornwall which has one of the highest case rates in the whole country and masks will be required in our schools thank goodness. Today I went round to see my friend and she has been quite against lockdowns she once shared some us for them stuff on Facebook. I have been highly cautious and took a LFT before we went. Today she was chatting to me and called it “disgraceful” that masks would be required and says she has written to the school to say her DD (14) is exempt and won’t be wearing one even though she isn’t. Aibu to think friend is being really selfish and it will be the fault of people like her if schools shut again.

@Mazblue86

Wearing masks won't make schools safe. In Cornwall the rule is children have to wear masks around corridors, not in classrooms or outside. This means that children will be removing and replacing the same mask a minimum of ten times a day, rendering the mask entirely ineffective.

I'm not a covid denier, I'm afraid of going back to school, pregnant and without protection, but making the kids wear masks in the corridor isn't going to make that happen.

Just don't send your child if you're worried.

But your friend isn't being selfish; she's being sensible.

There is no evidence that removing and replacing a mask outside the clinical environment is an issue. You may not have seen more recent evidence but the touch transmission issue is really not much of a thing.

Wearing masks anywhere indoors is better than not.

Covid is airborne, therefore masks help.

No one action will make it 'safe' but masks make the amount of covid circulating in the air lower.

@Delatron

People place so much importance on masks. It’s ridiculous. Do we think children/teenagers even wear them properly? Scrunched up in their pockets/ reused/ hanging down by their mouths. They are not doing anything...
Whenever it is just ONE country doing something differently - either they are wrong or they have very robust and new evidence for doing it differently.

On this one, the UK is wrong. We have a thick as shit right wing government being led by the very right wing of their party. that is the only reason England doesn't have masks in schools - it is a political position.

🙄. There are plenty of us who are apposed to forcing children to be masked in school who aren’t right wing. Stop being so tribalist. Not everything is about identity politics. It’s ok to think for oneself and to have a plurality of opinion that doesn’t necessarily fall along a binary political axis. Attitudes like yours are toxic to democracy (and dumb).

I am not tribalist, my vote changes regularly. It is the government who are the tribalists - their decision on masks has been made due to the political views of the small group of backbenchers who were once the ERG and now the CRG.

Those of you who disagree with masks for other reasons fair enough - but you are not the reason the UK has chosen the anti-scientific policies it has.

It is the government who has made masks an issue of identity politics (as they have with so many issues).

And I stand by my statement we have a thick as shit right wing government.

I'd be fine with a decent right wing government or a decent left wing government, it is the fact they are as thick as shit that annoys me.

@lannistunut yet in Scotland it is still required and schools have been back several weeks ...... And we are topping the European case tables for many areas.....

They are making no difference because its ventilation and the masks still allow the small droplets to escape and still allow small droplets to be breathed in and delta you need less viral load of small droplets hence it has a natural R number of 6.4 compared to 2 with previous varieties.

Personally I prefer for them not to be in law and actually allow people to choose. We have to put one on to go to the toilet in a cafe..... Despite spending 45 minutes plus sat at a table without one on its not backed up by science at all in many scenarios!

lannistunut · 31/08/2021 17:05

@Scottishskifun

We of course have n idea if your situation in Scotland would be worse without them? #

I feel we are not reacting to Delta at all really, just to Alpha and things are not what we were hoping.

Well we will see in a few weeks but so far England not required by law and case numbers per 100,000 are lower than in Scotland....

Tbh going by the studies around poorly ventilated areas (which schools typically are) it doesn't make much difference with air build up and classrooms you sit for majority of the day! Wales is reacting to Delta science with installing ventilation units in Schools.

People like to think they are effective they put it on and suddenly everything is OK..... At reducing brief face to face transmission yes spend 30 minutes in a poorly ventilated space and no they become a safety blanket doing very little!
