Boardmasters Festival - superspreader event!

ineedaholidaynow · 23/08/2021 10:51

Did anyone go to this festival and not come down with COVID! Every local youngster who went to it seems to have contracted COVID, and I see it keeps getting mentioned on MN, and all posters can't be referring to the same youngsters.

Have other festivals been the same?

If someone went to Boardmasters with flu, would it have such a high transmission rate, bearing in mind most people there wouldn't have been vaccinated against flu?

Mind listening to the stories about the toilets I'm assuming there might be higher hit rate of D&V Envy not envy!

The worry is the people they have passed it onto, especially given the relatively high rate of reinfection/ infection of the double vaccinated with delta. There’s also the question of disruption at the start of term due to infection of younger unvaccinated siblings returning to school, especially from festivals over tha August Bank Holiday.

NannyAndJohn · 23/08/2021 19:49

My main concern is that they'll have passed it on to so many others via the use of public transport, and will have also passed it on to their younger siblings just as schools are about to go back.

It's going to be carnage.

overthethamesfromyou · 23/08/2021 19:56

My dd went, shared a tent with three others, two have come back with Covid. She didn't along with one other girl, but they had both had it in the previous month.

She saw numerous positive LFT lying on the ground, discarded when presumably others went to get their mates to test for them!

slalomsuki · 23/08/2021 20:01

DS went with 24 mates. 1 has tested positive but the rest are clear including DS. Lots of tests done on return but all clear so far. The one that is positive went to a peerage gathering on Monday and Tuesday after Boardmasters so may have picked it up there.

RubyViolet · 23/08/2021 20:12

3 positives here. All had a great time but are under the weather now. We know people who were performing, they were in and off site as fast as humanly possibly 😂😂. There will be more spreading to come from Creamfields, Reading and Leeds, Feastival, Wireless. Timing isn’t great for Freshers.

lissie123 · 23/08/2021 20:12

Friends dd went. Shared a tent with three other girls. All came back with Covid.

Squidlydoo · 23/08/2021 20:13

I’ve just come back from holiday near Newquay. By the end of the week so many businesses were starting to close due to positive cases - a few even explicitly stated it was down to Boardmasters.

One location was closed til September due to positive cases and in another shop I heard the staff talking about who was going to cover the shifts due to the amount of staff positive with covid

Sparklingbrook · 23/08/2021 20:19

Nobody I know (DS's mates) came back from there with Covid.

UsernameFail · 23/08/2021 20:31

I'm in Newquay this week and most restaurants have cancelled reservations due to staff shortages.
I've been into Sainsbury's, Tesco's and Lidl - shortage of food but over heard staff rightly complaining about colleagues being pinged or testing positive and being massively short staffed. Everyone is on their knees affected by Boardmasters, and we're now terrified we'll get it just before school starts. Oh well.

Dd has some friends who went and now have it.

user1487194234 · 23/08/2021 20:44

Know about 20 who went
4 positive cases but all recovering and no one was seriously ill
One of my friend's wouldn't let her Dds go
Took them up to London instead and they both came back with Covid

Porcupineintherough · 23/08/2021 20:46

My nephew recently came down w covid 3 days after going to a festival. He's unvaxxed, his vaxxed friends are fine so far.

Delta is much more transmissable than flu. Also, most of us have at least partial immunity to some kinds of flu by adulthood.
cantkeepawayforever · 23/08/2021 20:50

Every one of DD's friends who went and who had not had Covid within the last few weeks got it at Boardmasters. About 15 cases in all out of a group of around 20.

Finewine76 · 23/08/2021 20:55

My daughter and her BF went to Boardmasters. They tried to camp for five nights lasted two. They ended up getting buses to go to the toilets out of area as they were so dirty. They returned to watch the band's at night but again left to stay elsewhere as it was so dirty. Both caught covid both double jabbed and both had it before.
Both also very poorly itchy skin runny nose aching all over and exhausted.

DaftVader42 · 23/08/2021 20:59

I wonder if the high transmission rate at boardmasters is related to the completely unsanitary toilets ? If you can check covid rates by sampling waste water, then would having toilets overflowing with raw sewage be enough to create a super spreading event ? Which is also why events like IoW Festival are less likely to be such a problem ?

3asAbird · 23/08/2021 21:28

I don't know how 5000 cases at covid test secure outdoor event is success.

www.itv.com/news/westcountry/2021-08-23/almost-5000-covid-cases-linked-to-boardmasters-festival

Massive impact in South west region we now the highest in the UK.

Cornwall was only recovering from g7 then this also massive impact on Devon also.

@Hashtag1

Every single teenager I know who went there came back with Covid. I know of 20+ kids with it (not yet vaccinated) In fact I only know one who did not get it but he had Covid last year.
same here.

ds went, and all his friends who went have since gone down with it, vaccinated or not.
He bumped into his cousin there, she hasn't gone down with it, but she had covid at uni last year and is double vaccinated whereas most od ds group have had one vaccine.

mrshoho · 23/08/2021 21:47

So this gives an insight into what to expect when schools return.

ineedaholidaynow · 23/08/2021 21:49

Doesn't look good for the first few weeks of school.

DumplingsAndStew · 23/08/2021 21:51

Wow, when I saw this thread this morning and googled to see what boardmasters was, there was speculated 50 connected cases. Now there's nearly 5000 being reported. That's nearly 10% of the capacity.

mrshoho · 23/08/2021 21:55

And CEV children and parents in a stressful position. The government announced that 12-15 would be offered a vaccine by 23rd August. Surprise surprise this has not yet happened in many cases.

Watapalava · 23/08/2021 22:01

Honestly why are people arsed? They’re all likely fine

556,000 live in Cornwall and there are 30 people in hospital with covid

30!

There are under 6000 in whole of uk in hospital with covid - there are 2000 uk hospitals so say an avaerve of 3 per uk hospital

Plus almost 1000 are being admitted per day suggesting people stay a day or two at most and then get discharged or numbers would be sky high at that daily rate and they’re not
