Has anyone had a negative lateral flow and a positive pcr in the same day?

not me, but this is very common. In my school, public health England pitched up and tested everyone with PCRs and found many positive cases, including children who had just got negative lateral flow tests a few hours earlier

54321nought · 09/08/2021 18:42

LFT are a useful method of screening out most positive asymptomatic cases, but are not particularly accurate. They probably catch MOST, but have never claimed to catch ALL

FawnFrenchieMum · 09/08/2021 18:43

Not me but it is common as the PCRs are a lot more sensitive. This is why anyone with symptoms should go straight for a PCR.

Scarby9 · 09/08/2021 18:44

Not me, but I know quite a few people who have. Quite common.

Pollypocket89 · 09/08/2021 18:51

Oh it's actually a thing then? I've got a headache and upset stomach/feel sick , did a lat flow and was negative and work want me to do a pcr which I now have but thought it was a little pointless with my symptoms?

dd1 did.

She had a negayive lf at school and was sent home as a close contact of an asymptamatic case.

She then did a lf a day all negative Including the day she started to cough and did a pcr. It was the pcr that was positive.

dd2 has just had covid, she had headache and being sick with it.

olidora63 · 09/08/2021 19:11

Yes. I know three people with neg LFT and pos PCR !

Handsnotwands · 09/08/2021 19:11

Yes. And as an experiment I did two lat flows at the same time, in the same way, and one was positive and one was negative

atracurious · 09/08/2021 19:12

Yes me. I did 3 lateral flows and a PCR. Lateral flows are inappropriate for those with symptoms

Pollypocket89 · 09/08/2021 19:14

Do headache and nausea/upset stomach count as covid symptoms? I thought I was being cautious with a lat flow!

OP posts:
caughtinanet · 09/08/2021 19:15

I would imgaine loads of people have, we all know that LFTs aren't 100% accurate so it's not a surprise that a PCR result would be different

Why are you doing and LFT if you have symptoms anyway?

beaverbill · 09/08/2021 19:17

Yes, me.
I took LFT as had been in contact with a positive case. It came back negative repeatedly for 4 days. I took a PCR the same day, it came back as positive the day after. I continued to take LFT to see when they would work (I’m a teacher and we’ve been made to take them) It took until day 4 to get a very faint positive. I was really ill so not even like it was a mild case!

Pollypocket89 · 09/08/2021 19:20

Caughtinanet, because I had the lat flow tests in anyway and my symptoms are headache and feeling sick with upset stomach so I assumed I was just ill rather than covid and now work requested pcr

That doesn't make sense, you only thought you needed a test at all because you had symptoms so by definition you need a PCR

LFT is for regular testing like school or job or if you've been in contact with someone who has tested positive but you feel absolutely fine.

If you just thought you were ill why did you do a test in the first place?

Pollypocket89 · 09/08/2021 19:27

Why am I being interrogated? Jesus

Because I had the tests in the house and was being cautious, like I said

Thankfully I've clearly been very lucky and this is my first experience having to do this. Apologies for not knowing the covid drill policy!

Yes currently isolating - work was having us test lft daily (due to previous cases)
Mon night - negative lft
Tues morning - negative lft
Tuesday early evening - went for pcr as a stand about work carrying on as normal with a lot of positive cases!
Tuesday evening - positive lft

Positive pcr then swiftly followed, all staff at work had different symptoms / none at all. I would advise to get a test for your own peace of mind!

madamecake · 09/08/2021 19:27

Yes, my DS had a negative lateral flow on the same day as a positive pcr. Nausea and a headache are common symptoms, my son along with some of his classmates only had vomiting last a symptom.

Pollypocket89 · 09/08/2021 19:28

Thanks all, I haven't experienced this before so clearly been very lucky!

@caughtinanet - calm down!!! OP is trying to be sensible here.. no need for the third degree.

Pollypocket89 · 09/08/2021 19:29

Thank you...

@Pollypocket89 - I wouldn’t dream of testing for a headache & feeling sick. It wouldn’t cross my mind that it was covid. I get those kinda symptoms around my period & we’ve also had stomach bugs & upset stomachs in the house recently. They might be covid symptoms along with a fever or cold like symptoms but just those alone, unlikely & certainly not a test trigger!

Pollypocket89 · 09/08/2021 19:42

That's what I thought but work won't let me back in without a pcr, which I've had and awaiting results

Come on, we've been at this for nearly 18 months, it's frustrating that there's still such a level of ignorance about the proper procedures. How are we ever going to get back to normal if people fanny about doing it wrong Grin

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 09/08/2021 19:46

@caughtinanet

Well done for being perfect.

You 'can't ' get a PCR test for a stomach bug or a 'cold' right now, if you follow the nonsensical rules, so how would OP know?

OP is being safe, even if not up to your exacting standards.

Pollypocket89 · 09/08/2021 19:48

'such a level of ignorance', it gets better...!
