A few AZ vaccine questions

If your periods changed after AZ how long was it before it returned to the normal pattern?

If you had excessive bleeding did you get help via the GP?

It feels like a silent struggle but maybe I’m wrong.

Also how do they deal with anaphylaxis in the centre? When my husband went it was all relaxed, he didn’t wait for 15 mins in the centre- apparently he was told if there was someone else with him he can leave.

If you go into anaphylactic shock in your car how can I seek help? Do all centres have trained staff, epi pens or is it a wait for an ambulance?

It’s just that when my daughters oxygen dipped in the gp surgery (long before Covid) the gp rang for an ambulance- never turned up and we drove her to A&E..so my trust levels are a tad low

Hi I can answer the 1 st question , I had my jab in March and periods are still all over the place .

As far as I am aware and I stand to be corrected the issue with anaphylaxis is with Pfizer not AZ.

@Tittyfilarious81 thank you- is it that the timing is messed up or increased bleeding?
I’ve just turned 40 so I’m wondering if I’ll be dismissed by saying it’s peri menopause..although my period up until now has been pretty regular and every 28 days

I had AZ. You don’t need to wait 15 minutes, you just leave. You don’t need anyone with you either.

The anaphylaxis risk is for the polyethylene glycol in the Pfizer vaccine. This isn't present in the AZ hence not needing to wait.

With AZ usually you only have to wait 15 minutes if you are driving.

They have kit to deal with anaphylaxis though if there's a known risk you might need to attend a hospital setting.

Last time I checked anaphylaxis rates were broadly similar for AZ and Pfizer, but still very low risk.

My ds has anaphylaxis /carries and epi penand had the Pfizer with no issues at all,just jabbed as normal.

At my centre people having Pfizer are advised to wait for the designated 15 minutes, but we're not allowed to make them. Personally I think it's worth it, as although it's not often, I have seen people faint after their jab. Although they are all fine after a few minutes, I'd rather have help dealing with it than be stuck in a car with someone having a reaction, as I drove them home.

I had AZ back in March and we all had to wait 15 mins.
It probably depends on the centre.

I've had 2 AZ and didn't wait 15 minutes and neither did dh. My period was a few days late but perfectly normal when it arrived

I had AZ and I wasn't told to wait, I was actually escorted from the centre! I'm needle phobic so there's no way I would have waited anyway, I just wanted to get out.

Regarding my periods I had 'best' one I'd had for years after the first vaccine, no pain, no headaches and much shorter. I had my second one in June and my next period is due this month (I back to back the pill) so I'm hoping for the same result!

AZ, a wait was suggested but was not compulsory - nobody can force you to stay

Friend has had a period for 6 weeks now after the vaccine and has been fobbed off by her GP. Hopefully other people have more positive stories.

@RoseAddict yes the fobbing off is pretty common in GP surgeries and the NHS, hence my question.

If a healthcare system is fobbing people off who are asking support for Health related issues, then what’s the point of this system?

I’m a volunteer vaccinator but haven’t been doing AZ for a while now as the vast majority having their first vaccine are in their early 20’s.

@VaccineAnxiety I am someone who has rarely had to use the NHS due to good luck but recently I’ve also felt it’s not really there any more in that it’s very very hard to get any help for anything that’s not an emergency. It’s scary what this government have allowed to happen and incredibly frustrating for those working hard in the NHS to help people. But re the period issues my friend’s experience has really cemented my decision not to have the vaccine. I already have covid antibodies so if I’m going to take a vaccine I don’t need for the good of the population then I bloody well expect the system to look after me afterwards if something goes wrong and I’m not seeing that happen

It depends where you’re getting vaccinated of course. I was given my AZ at local GP surgery, nobody waited afterwards because everyone had walked there not driven. If there had been a medical emergency then of course there would have been a bunch of GPs there, but not much equipment.

DD was given her Pfizer at Francis Crick Institute, five minutes from a huge teaching hospital, surrounded by a million volunteer medics from student to consultant. They made them wait in a lecture theatre watching telly on the big screen for fifteen minutes before they left, and there was a very senior-looking chap at the front watching them while holding on to a cart full of equipment including a defibrillator.

So if you’re anxious, maybe shop around for venues.

No. It arrived a week early, but back to every four weeks after that, and no change to my cycle after the second jab.

@RoseAddict it is concerning and I’m not comfortable at all- but my family really want me to get it: also who is to say the drop in cases is due to vaccinations only? It’s still an evolving study isn’t it?

He wasn’t exactly staring at us, it was just one bloke sitting in the corner at the front of a big auditorium, and there happened to be a trolley of equipment next to him, gathering dust.
