A few AZ vaccine questions

If your periods changed after AZ how long was it before it returned to the normal pattern?

If you had excessive bleeding did you get help via the GP?

It feels like a silent struggle but maybe I’m wrong.

Also how do they deal with anaphylaxis in the centre? When my husband went it was all relaxed, he didn’t wait for 15 mins in the centre- apparently he was told if there was someone else with him he can leave.

If you go into anaphylactic shock in your car how can I seek help? Do all centres have trained staff, epi pens or is it a wait for an ambulance?

It’s just that when my daughters oxygen dipped in the gp surgery (long before Covid) the gp rang for an ambulance- never turned up and we drove her to A&E..so my trust levels are a tad low

Why are you so worried about period side effects, OP?

Irregular periods is my life-long normal so I'm intrigued by ppl who find them impossible to cope with.

TrampolineForMrKite · 03/08/2021 04:38

After dose one of the AZ my periods went haywire for about three months. Back to normal now though and the second dose didn’t mess them up.

Where I had mine they didn’t ask me to wait, but this seemed to change depending on the patients age. At the same vaccine centre me, my sister and husband (all mid to late 30s) weren’t asked to say, whereas my parents and granny (65, 75 and 90) were all made to sit down and wait for 15 minutes.

VaccineAnxiety · 03/08/2021 08:44

@lljkk the problem is it’s not normal for me- I’ve never had irregular periods. If my periods play havoc after the vaccine then the contributing factor has to be the vaccine which causes concerns to me.

Parker231 · 03/08/2021 08:50

Irregular periods can happen for a number of reasons - lifestyle, illness, stress and medication. Everything doesn’t need to be blamed on the vaccine.

VaccineAnxiety · 03/08/2021 09:10

@Parker231 not blaming but if it happens to someone who never experienced this before, soon after vaccination then there could be a correlation.

@VaccineAnxiety Hi. I wasn't concerned about the vaccines effect on my period as I hadn't heard anything being mentioned. But I did indeed have side effects and when I searched on Mumsnet for answers I think it's quite common. After my first vaccine I had my normal on time period. Then my next period was 2 weeks late. I didn't think it was to do with the vaccine - I thought I might be stressed. Then when my period arrived it was very heavy, full of clots and almost unmanageable. I did think about consulting GP after the first week but I thought, well what can they realistically do! The period lasted 14 days. I haven't had my next one I'm due in 10 days - well counting from the end of the last one.

DinosaurDiana · 03/08/2021 09:20

He doesn’t need to wit with AZ, just Pfizer due to the historical reactions.
You don’t wait when you have any other jabs.

VaccineAnxiety · 03/08/2021 09:28

@MabelStark fingers crossed next one is not as bad. This is what I’m referring to - clearly this is not normal for you but could be (again I’m only saying could be as no one knows) due to the vaccine

oneglassandpuzzled · 03/08/2021 09:36

At our GP vaccination centre if you're driving, we ask you to wait in your car for 15 minutes before driving.

Anaphylaxis seems to be less of an issue for AZ than for Pfizer, but as there are always at least one doctor and one nurse in the vaccination marquee we are well covered. Marshals patrol the carpark and would notice if someone had collapsed in their car as they need to keep the traffic moving. I work on the gate, ticking people off the list and writing out cards, and I am told to keep an eye on the carpark area and on people as they leave and to get a medic immediately if there's any cause for concern.

I imagine it's the same elsewhere.

Parker231 · 03/08/2021 09:36

My periods weren’t affected neither were my DD, DSis or DSil - different jabs in three different countries.

MabelStark · 03/08/2021 09:45

@VaccineAnxiety yes certainly not normal for me. And everyone I spoke to about my concern said it was most likely the start of menopause.

lljkk · 03/08/2021 11:13

Wait... do lots of people have a belief that if something about their body changes, is no longer their "normal", no matter how small -- that this change is something they "should" worry about?

i think this was in another thread. A poster said she literally never had any unexplained aches anywhere on her body so if one happened, even if it was mild & just for a few days, then she assumed that something very bad was happening to her.

it's foreign to me to think that way, just trying to comprehend.

Parker231 · 03/08/2021 16:53

Every ache and pain cannot be attributed to the vaccinations. I remember having a typhoid injection before a holiday - I felt dreadful but it only lasted a few days, a week at maximum. I knew that side effects were likely but more importantly I knew I needed the vaccination.

duffeldaisy · 03/08/2021 18:06

I had AZ and they asked us to wait 15 minutes afterwards the first time, although it was very relaxed and no sense of anyone really needing the wait - just a precaution.

The second time, they said there was no need (they said if you have no reaction first time then it's not going to be a problem second time either).

My periods have stayed exactly the same as they were before the vaccines. No change at all. I did have the first vaccine at the start of my cycle, though.

Wakeupin2022 · 03/08/2021 20:06

I have extremely regular periods.

Went I started to TTC I missed a period. Not pregnant just a missed period. I was convinced I wasn't going to fall pregnant naturally so I suspect it was anxiety more than anything.

My period stayed regular as clockwork with AZ vaccine. No issues at all. But then I wasn't looking for problems.........

VaccineAnxiety · 03/08/2021 22:05

@Wakeupin2022 thank you. I’m not looking for problems per se but preparing myself for when I get this vaccination

Does anyone know how long I have to seek medical help for issues like clots?

I get migraines as it is so if I get a bad headache after vaccine it’ll be difficult to differentiate- I would guess time is if the essence?

''It’s just that when my daughters oxygen dipped in the gp surgery (long before Covid) the gp rang for an ambulance- never turned up and we drove her to A&E..so my trust levels are a tad low''

Doctors' surgeries calling for an ambulance are very low priority. The wait is always very long. They think because they have medical equipment there and trained staff it doesn't matter.

RuthW · 03/08/2021 22:14

Like others said you only wait with Pfizer.

Anyone clinical who does an injection anywhere has to carry adrenalin in case of emergency. All NHS workers have to be first aid trained, even admin.

And as still others have said, it depends on the centre. I had AZ along with 90 colleagues and we waited (twice) for 15 minutes.
VaccineAnxiety · 04/08/2021 10:22

Thank you for your responses- I’m trying to peep my self as best as I can

So far - don’t need to necessarily wait for AZ but I will wait maybe outside the venue as I’m expecting things to go wrong

Might have clots - well what can I do. If this is how it ends fit me so be it

Period issues - pot luck - again who knows but no support from GPs etc

I was told to wait in car for both my AZ apps so I would agree that you do this.

Parker231 · 04/08/2021 15:09

The sites I’ve been a volunteer vaccinator at, and the one I had my AZ vaccines, we asked people to wait in their cars.

@lljkk

Irregular periods is my life-long normal so I'm intrigued by ppl who find them impossible to cope with.

Because it's normal for you,,,,,, Not everyone else. It's a massive inconvenience for a start
lljkk · 04/08/2021 18:27

I suppose everything being unpredictable is my normal, that's true.
