I wanted to ask the young man behind me in the queue, to move back.

Just this really. He wasn’t right on my heels but pretty close. Given that this age group are the main carriers at the moment, and he wasn’t wearing a mask, I desperately wanted to ask him to social distance a bit more. I didn’t, but I felt very uncomfortable.

Should I have said something? Would you have done?

Overall I was pleasantly surprised how many people were still wearing masks.I did look at those who weren’t, and silently judge them and think how selfish they were. I know some of them would have been exempt for a good reason but a lot of them wouldn’t be.

@Emilyontmoor

This is a forum where people share opinions. If you don’t like that, then I’m not sure why you are here. I’m pretty comfortable with who I am (and said opinion) so your bizarre reference to blokes who like to drink Stella doesn’t bother me very much at all.

It’s all very much a matter of balance, If the idea of no masks was that outrageous they would still be mandated, and they aren’t. You do sound very unhinged.

Tresal · 23/07/2021 21:03

Maybe shop online or go at less busy times or just tell them to stand back. Have courage in your convictions and go for it.

Emilyontmoor · 23/07/2021 22:27

Chilly There you go again, anyone who is following the general scientific consensus is hysterical, anxious, paranoid, unhinged even! But you of course, though in the minority, which includes only a handful of people with any expertise, and they regarded as outliers in the scientific community, are the epitome of rational intelligent reason Grin The only reason we are not required to wear masks is our unhinged PM,pandering to some really unhinged right wing politicians, with such a fantastic record of protecting the country from some of the highest infection and death rates in the world Hmm

middleager · 23/07/2021 22:33

I was in Primark Walsall today, I was the only person wearing a mask, seriously, and it's a decent sized store.
I just can't ask everybody to mask up, so I'll just have to avoid it.

Chillychangchoo · 24/07/2021 09:09

@Emilyontmoor

The epitome of rational reason? Why thank you Grin.

Ooo another assumption. Because Boris has said we can remove masks I am now pandering to him? Erm, not quite. I wear a mask every day at work currently (depending on what particular setting I’m in as I work in social care). I am physically around other people every single day so my anxiety is a lot lower than the average mumsnetter. So if I want to take my mask off in shops and restaurants then I will happily do so now it’s not mandated.

I do my bit overall in society, so I’m fine with it, really.

Laughing my head off though at people assuming I’m an anti vaxxer, right winger 🤣.

Twoforthree · 24/07/2021 09:10

Thanks guys. Next time I’ll pluck up the courage to say something.

So you are are around lots of people every day and are quite risky to others, yet you won’t be courteous enough to protect others when you aren’t forced to wear a mask.
And this sits right with you?

@Twoforthree

Good luck with calling random strangers out (particularly young men) in public places.

People are angry out there….. you might get more than you bargain for so be careful before you start taking advice off middle class Mary’s who’s only social trips these days involve a short trip to Waitrose.

Chillychangchoo · 24/07/2021 09:20

@Twoforthree

Oh it sure does, and a lot of my colleagues too. I follow all required restrictions at work and I keep to the law outside of work.

There are plenty of my colleagues at work who have refused the vaccine so as it stands I’m not the biggest risk to them because I decide to take my mask off in the local corner shop, but yeah I’m totally fine with it.

HalzTangz · 24/07/2021 09:25

According to the government all social distancing has been restricted,he wasn't doing anything wrong. I do still distance and wear masks (think this is something that should still be mandatory) but if I was him and someone told me to move, I would point out the current laws

PopcornMuncher · 24/07/2021 09:37

Fuck off with your judgemental shit.

People don't have to wear masks and your sanctimonious I'm-better-than-you attitude just makes you appear ridiculous

I don't care if this gets me deleted or banned.

PhilCornwall1 · 24/07/2021 09:44

Start coughing. Everyone moves away from you

I'll give this a try next time I'm out.

Onlinedilema · 24/07/2021 09:46

Why can't people just give others space and respect personal boundaries, seriously.

sunstreaming · 24/07/2021 09:54

Assuming that the contributors to this thread are parents and therefore in charge of the well-being of children, I'm amazed at some of the comments. It's a poity that we out up with behaviout from others which makes us uncomfortabel and might harm us. Yes - even diuble jabbed people can ctach Covid. The Health Sec for instance. If someone's behaviour is making you uncomfortable, you can poitely and asertively say something like, 'I'm uncomfortable with how close you're standing. I'd prefer it if you moved back a bit, Thank you,' Now the person will probably move back and also probably apologise. They might be rude to you, but if they've moved back, so what? Yes they have a 'right' to stand where they want as being too close to others isn't against the law. It's impolite though and especially when Covid infections are so rife, it's unnecessarily putting other people at risk. I'm sad that so many adults cannot distinguish between being adult and making polite and reasonable requests and 'having a go' at someone. Unless you live on a desert island or in your own enclave of some sort, we all have to rub along together and trying your best to make other people comfortable, especially when the effort involved really isn't a big deal, is a good idea.

Please don't. Coughing needlessly during a pandemic is thoughtless, potentially risky and will make many people feel uncomfortable, not just the neck-breather.

You think it's acceptable to be weird and ignorant to a stranger's personal space just because you're not breaking any laws? Confused

^^ Wear one, don't wear one. I'm not losing a wink of sleep over it

Honestly 🙄🙄🙄🙄 and being pleasantly surprised by people still wearing masks ? 😫🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 we don’t have to wear them anymore. Are all of you going to wear them for the rest of your lives? Because covid will always be here just like flu.

H65447788888 · 24/07/2021 12:27

The divide from mask wearers and non mask wearing is insane and the judgment!! Seriously if your that scared don’t go out ! If people don’t want to wear masks or social distance it’s there choice. I do not wear one anywhere now.

Yes, that's the only two options...

Wear one forever,
Or wear one whilst transmission is still hideously high.

Nothing in between 🙄🙄

H65447788888 · 24/07/2021 12:35

@DumplingsAndStew

A mask does fuck all to protect you or others !! there grotty little pieces of fabric that your breathing/ coughing into and Constantly touching with your dirty hands there full of germs, most people are re using disposable ones that are sitting in the car full of bacteria. You people judging others disgust me. Seriously get a life ! We have a choice to wear a mask or not and like I said if you are all that scared of someone coming near you or not having a mask on stay the fuck at home!

Jaxhog · 24/07/2021 12:38

@Iwonder08

You could have moved yourself if you are worried. Or perhaps shop online
Seriously? So if we're vulnerable, we should just stay home out of everyone's way then, in case it inconveniences others?

Just ask them to give you a bit more room.

Said with no irony whatsoever.

Perhaps everyone should just quit with the judgy twatness. And while we're at it, stop it with all the 'sides' nonsense.

TheVampiresWife · 24/07/2021 12:41

Also can we please bear in mind that some people are unable to SD or find it difficult to do so.

I'm not sure why your response is aimed at me, when all I did was point out there are other options?

Why so aggressive hun? U OK?
