Would you allow your 16yr old to go on scout camp?

It seems to be going ahead from Friday for a week.
They’ve split the groups up and he will be in a smaller group of 7 who will do activities together in a larger camp of about 25 kids and a leader.
I don’t know about sleeping arrangements tho.

I’ve just had one kid sick and we’ve isolated as a family for 6 days till he got a negative test.
I’m frazzled

But I haven’t the heart to say he can’t go to camp

I'd be inclined to let him go. They've lost out on a lot. I understand your feelings though!

The Leaders have had to go through a mass of Risk Assessments to get to this stage.

There is no 'risk free' but I think the fact they will be outside all the time is a positive, along with all the other things they are having to follow to get through the RA.

I guess it depends on if you / your dc is doing anything after camp that would be a disaster to cancel if he ends up in isolation ?

Ultimately, now we can do more, I think we all have to make those judgement about any potential risk, balanced against the benefits / gain from doing the activity.

The scout association have extensive rules and training that scout groups have to follow to enable them to go on a scout camp. This has increased even more with COVID. My 11yr old is going on scout camp next week and my 15yr old is going on explorer scout camp after that. I am confident the leaders are doing everything to comply with all the scout association guidance - which seems more restrictive than the 'law'.

Of course, he could catch covid from doing just about anything so may as well have fun while its on offer.

My 15 yr old had a cadet camp cancelled, so if you have the chance to send him, then yes!

I would pay a good deal of money to get my 16yo out of the house on any pretext whatsoever. She has been sat on her bum since her GCSE course ended in March and is driving me up the wall!

Yes, I would let him go.
My 12 yr old was at a Scout Camp last weekend. We were asked to do LFTs the day before and the day after they got home. It was a small camp (maybe 15 children plus leaders) but the children shared tents and didn't socially distance.
Cases are quite high where we are at the moment, but he'd just broken up from school and I think camp was less of a Covid risk than being in a stuffy classroom with different groups of 30 children every day!

If it is outdoor camping, then yes. I'd ask for more details if it is indoors though.

@thenakedmolerat are you a parent who would send their child to camp with COVID? OP has correctly isolated whilst waiting for a child to get a negative test result.

Maybe that is why OP is worrying about sending their child on camp whilst there are parents with cavalier attitudes like yours

Mine should have been on one this weekend but it's had to be rescheduled as the Scouts were being so cautious with their rules - will be booking and paying for the rescheduled one in the next few days quite happily.

i need a holiday
I'm the sort of parent who would never test myself or my child so it wouldn't be an issue as I would have no idea whether positive or not.
I'd take the same attitude as I always have,
If child is too ill to go and enjoy camp they would stay home.
if child was well enough to go and enjoy camp then they would go.
