Anyone else infuriated by people saying this. It’s like, yes of course we all want to move on but we have a novel virus circulating in high numbers. Are people really so naive to think if we wish it away it’ll be gone?!

"get on with our lives", "hold firm and move on", "live with the virus", "not hide in our houses forever" etc etc

all synonymous with pretending COVID doesn't exist, rather than finding ways to open back up society while keeping transmission at safe levels

It’s essentially shorthand for “I am not, nor is anyone I know, vulnerable to the virus; or indeed anything else which might make me particularly concerned about whether I could access a hospital. I didn’t particularly care about the well-being of a bunch of strangers prior to February 2020, and that sentiment has not really changed now. I am tired of having my life restricted for the sake of others, when none of these people would give a stuff about me and the range of other things that might affect my life in return.”

Would you prefer more people just said that?

You can’t change the existence of a virus by declaring such things, but you can change whether or not you think the very harmful measures taken to control it remain proportionate or not. That’s what people mean, I suspect.

The message outside our local Sainsbury's today was basically , mask wearing is up to you.
Everyone had a mask on, which surprised and pleased me. It's rife in our community amongst the young here.

@leafyygreens agree. We could invest money in things like ventilation, as other countries have done to help reduce the spread, instead of investing it in tackling cases.

We could have been in such a good place if Johnson hadn't have let delta seed here so early. He's carried on as though that hasn't happened. Nothing has been said either about how we deal with the large number of the population who are under 18 to make schools genuinely safer - most kids don't die, so let's ignore long term health issues for them. Too many people asked to isolate? That's because too many people have been in contact with a covid case. Vaccinations have been amazing in helping to reduce the link, but we still need other tools, whilst cases are this high. Remove some of the issues so that we can move on in a sustainable way and live with covid in a realistic way.

I agree. It usually means 'if I catch covid I'll probably be fine, same for my family members, therefore I'm going back to 'normal'... if you or yours die, oh well!'

I am well and truly fed up with it all. But that doesn't mean I think it's safe to just pretend the virus is gone.

I think that’s spot on. Personally I don’t deny there is a virus here that can cause harm to some people, I have largely followed rules, taken a jab I didn’t particularly want to take for the sake of society as a whole. Why am I then not allowed to question whether the measures taken to deal with it cause harm? Anyone who asks that sort of question is often shot down here.

Your last sentence here is important I think. There ARE other things that can harm people other than covid and some people are determined that covid is more important than any of those things. It is blindingly obvious to me that if you are vulnerable/have a vulnerable relative you are much more likely to be in favour of the restrictions than someone who is having mental health issues made worse by this, but the latter person is somehow seen to be ‘bad’ by certain factions of society. I find it all very bizarre. (For full disclosure I’m not particularly in either camp, but I understand that people might have different points of view, being free thinking humans…)

Yeah, I'd love another few months of wiping your kid's snot off the table because schools are perfectly safe but seeing my family is not. I've cut all my friends out who love a lockdown but believe the nonsense about schools somehow being safe. If you think that you've got a major cognitive impairment and if you just join in with the rhetoric then you're a dickhead.

I think most people just enjoy WFH while sending their kids into school and not seeing family they don't like. I'm going to come and snot all over you in the supermarket and see how you like it.

You could also say that I want restrictions fo continue is shorthand for.

"I have been able to work from home in mi dedicated office space for the whole pandemic and have lost no income. I have enough money to pay people on minimum wage to deliver stuff to me so I can keep me and my family safe. I have no family abroad so I don't care about foreign travel. I live with my family and am am introvert anyway so my mental health is fine".

but "we need to move on" doesn't mean or even imply that

what you see is posters making those kinds of statements without any suggestions as to how "moving on" can be squared with minimising transmission. There's no acknowledgement that the removal of all suppression measures will likely lead to a scenario where another national lockdown is needed, which no one wants
