Younger people who got AZ - what did you do about second dose?

Mixmeup · 05/07/2021 17:13

I had AZ for my first dose and I'm 35. No specific risk factor for me - just a random text from the NHS and GP said might as well go for it (much, much regret since then as it's now banned in my age group!)

I cancelled my second dose as I wasn't comfortable with the risk. They really don't seem to know enough about it. The fact they were blindsided by this totally terrified me (it was an awful time after I got my first jab as from 2 days afterwards every other country started banning it in my age group and the UK started announcing more and more cases and deaths from AZ, and I suffer from anxiety anyway).

But I just don't know what to do now. People who've had AZ but it's now banned in your age group - what have you done about your second dose?

I wish they'd let us mix. Basically every other country where younger people have had AZ is giving them MRNA for the second dose (and the trials are showing this gives better immunity anyway!) so I'm annoyed that we have no option and keep wondering if I hold out if they'll change their mind. But of course I'm also worried if I hold out I'll just get the bloody Covid. It's tempting to just get it and get it over with but the regret was so deep after my first vaccine that I feel I've lost all trust in this vaccine.

On other hand, I'm 35 with no known underlying health conditions, BMI is 29 so not slim but shouldn't be at risk really and may not even catch Covid ever so is it worth risking that they now know all there is to know about AZ or should I just forget it and crack on with life (I don't travel so not fussed in that regard).

I mixed

Chocolatebuttercream · 05/07/2021 17:16

I had the AZ. The risk is tiny and seems to be higher after the first dose than the second.

YouReallyAre · 05/07/2021 17:19

I had my 2nd AZ dose just as they were stopping it for the younger cohort (I'm 37).

I was under the impression that of you were ok wrt blood clots after the first then you would be ok after the 2nd. I did make sure that I knew what symptoms to look out for though!

Tatum1234 · 05/07/2021 17:20

I got my second dose, didn’t think twice tbh as the risk is so low.

CharlieChickenson · 05/07/2021 17:21

I had my second AZ, early 30's, the risk didn't really worry me tbh.

NotMyCat · 05/07/2021 17:21

37, CEV and had second dose

Treehaus · 05/07/2021 17:24

I had the second dose, it's interesting people seem more comfortable with the idea of mixing when trials haven't been completed yet and there's not as much data.

NotquitewhatImeant · 05/07/2021 17:27

I had it - same reasons as others in terms of first being more risk. I’ll probably ask for Pfizer is I have choice with the September booster though - main,y because it seems to be more effective!

muddledmidget · 05/07/2021 17:27

I had the second AZ dose. The blood clots were unexpected, and took time for them to work out what was going on, but we are so much better prepared now. They can be tested for quite simply if you have a headache or any other reason to suspect you have developed one, and there is a treaent pathway now which has reduced the risk of death considerably, as doctors now have best practice guidance available, rather than blindly giving anticoagulants etc. GPs are now primed to ask about covid jabs if you develop any weird side effects afterwards, and the risk of delta with only one jab is significantly higher than with the Kent variant.

greensnail · 05/07/2021 17:28

I'm in my thirties, was very happy to go ahead with my second AZ.

toolazytothinkofausername · 05/07/2021 17:30

I'm 33. First and second were AZ.

motogogo · 05/07/2021 17:31

Both our DD's had AZ (March) and both had second doses in June. They were called early due to antidepressants.

motogogo · 05/07/2021 17:31

Should ad both early 20's

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 05/07/2021 17:36

I'd have the second AZ without a doubt. The clot risk is so rare and so low. If you've ever flown or taken the contraceptive pill, you had higher risk of clots. Plus you know from your first jab that AZ didn't cause them for you. Covid has a much higher risk, and being partially vaccinated would worry me far more than the tiny AZ clot risk.

ForeverFloating · 05/07/2021 17:37

I’m 34 and have had both. I was definitely concerned about dose 2 but the risk is very small. Day 13 post dose 2 today, all ok so far and very mild effects compared to my first dose.

wanderedlonelyasacloud · 05/07/2021 17:40

I had AZ as my first dose, I'm in my 20s. I was fine so would have got my second dose no problem but found out I was pregnant so after a lot of back and forth I have decided to delay it.

Of I wasnt pregnant I'd have no problem at all with having my second dose of it

dancingbroccoli · 05/07/2021 17:41

I'm 23 and have had both AZ. As they are not mixing or have done any testing on this (as far as I'm aware) I decided the risk was low enough to take rather than only have 1 dose

Mixmeup · 05/07/2021 17:46

@whataballbag

I mixed
How did you get to mix?
OP posts:
whataballbag · 05/07/2021 17:48

@Mixmeup phoned my GP and told him how worried I was about the second dose. I have severe health anxiety anyway which he is aware off so he sent an email off to the attached vaccine hub confirming he was happy for me to have a Pfizer second dose.

Doctor there that did it said she was seeing more, and that her DIL had had mixed vaccines too

NotQuiteUsual · 05/07/2021 17:52

I had the second AZ and am glad I did. I reacted quite badly to the first, but absolutely nothing with the second. I heard the first jab is the one that'll kill you if it's going to. No idea if it's true or not, but it's done now.

PatchworkElmer · 05/07/2021 17:54

I had it- and no side effects to dose #2 at all. The birth control pill seems to be much higher risk and I happily took that for years so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Feelingbad2 · 05/07/2021 17:55

I’m 34, I had my second dose quite a few weeks ago. All been ok.

Londontown12 · 05/07/2021 17:58

My Dd has had both Az vaccinations she’s 18! She couldn’t have the other one due to allergies she was fine x

Cookerhood · 05/07/2021 18:00

DS & DD 25 & 22 had theirs with no worries as they knew the risk was tiny.

Strugglingalone · 05/07/2021 18:01

Late 20’s was shielding, had az 1 before risks even realised. Had az 2 a week or so after the problems flared up, was slightly anxious but for me the risks from covid were far far worse!
