Younger people who got AZ - what did you do about second dose?

I had AZ for my first dose and I'm 35. No specific risk factor for me - just a random text from the NHS and GP said might as well go for it (much, much regret since then as it's now banned in my age group!)

I cancelled my second dose as I wasn't comfortable with the risk. They really don't seem to know enough about it. The fact they were blindsided by this totally terrified me (it was an awful time after I got my first jab as from 2 days afterwards every other country started banning it in my age group and the UK started announcing more and more cases and deaths from AZ, and I suffer from anxiety anyway).

But I just don't know what to do now. People who've had AZ but it's now banned in your age group - what have you done about your second dose?

I wish they'd let us mix. Basically every other country where younger people have had AZ is giving them MRNA for the second dose (and the trials are showing this gives better immunity anyway!) so I'm annoyed that we have no option and keep wondering if I hold out if they'll change their mind. But of course I'm also worried if I hold out I'll just get the bloody Covid. It's tempting to just get it and get it over with but the regret was so deep after my first vaccine that I feel I've lost all trust in this vaccine.

On other hand, I'm 35 with no known underlying health conditions, BMI is 29 so not slim but shouldn't be at risk really and may not even catch Covid ever so is it worth risking that they now know all there is to know about AZ or should I just forget it and crack on with life (I don't travel so not fussed in that regard).

I don't know what to do-I have had the first dose and just recently cancelled my 2nd.
I am concerned about clots, but mainly the side effects I experienced-and still am!
I was very breathless afterwards and struggled especially after walking up stairs/steep inclines, my legs felt heavy and I needed to sit down-this went on for a week.
It has now been almost 9 weeks and I still feel out of breath after walking upstairs, my legs are very heavy still.
I can only put it down to the AZ because I was fine before-I did test and was neg.
I am scared to have the 2nd and for this to become worse or simply not go away!!!!
It is a tough choice and the longer I leave it the more I feel like it will all be too late.
Will it affect travel for me next Year?
It has

Just wanted to come back to the thread and say I got my second vaccine. I'm still conflicted about it but on balance it felt like the sensible decision, given Delta and the removing of restrictions as well as the low rates of blood clots after second doses.

I had my first about 20 weeks ago, think it's a bit too long to have my second now but am worried about the blood clot risk with this particular vaccine.

Cookerhood · 08/07/2021 11:28

It's never too long to have your second. Now that rates are higher the risk benefit is much more in favour of younger people having AZ.

TulipVictory · 08/07/2021 13:15

@Cookerhood but it's well outside the window that we are supposed to have it ? 🤔

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 08/07/2021 13:27

DS 23 had both doses. On his way home from his second one he got a text saying not to got for his jab. He was absolutely fine and had virtually no side effects.

Yes but it doesn't mean it won't work, it will still boost your immune response.

Rainbowsandstorms · 08/07/2021 16:27

@TulipVictory there was recently some research that showed a very long gap, I think it was 45 weeks produced a stronger immune response. AZ was trialed with a gap of up to 26 weeks and 12 to 26 weeks gave the strongest response. I hope that helps.

MikeHat · 08/07/2021 17:04

DS 23 had his 2nd AZ without hesitation.

Chillychangchoo · 08/07/2021 17:56

@TulipVictory

I remember your posts a few weeks back because I was in a similar predicament regarding the second. Anyway I went ahead and had it and I am now 4 weeks post vaccine.

Time is going to pass by anyway if you see what I mean and the risk is so small. My anxiety actually reduced when I had it. (I’m 32). Go for it.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 08/07/2021 17:58

Got it. I'm 30 and got the first early for health reasons. Then I had a small rash/clot issue, but it went away.

I had the second a few weeks ago, at 15 weeks pregnant. FAR better to be protected than not, and they are prepared for reactions now. I felt very reassured by the staff.
