Have people forgotten about social distancing?

Went to a big family get together yesterday. Everyone was hugging and kissing and there was no social distancing at all. Is this the norm these days? I got a lot of weird comments for saying I didn't want to kiss anyone hello or goodbye!

OP posts:

Serious question not mocking you or anything I honestly am Just wondering, what did you expect when going to a big family event, did you think you would sit in household groups 2m away from others? I take it there was kids, did you think they wouldn’t play together or hug and kiss family members?

Again I honestly am not being rude I just wondered how you thought it would be?

osbertthesyrianhamster · 04/07/2021 16:04

Yes. Fuck it. Never did that don't hug your own family members. Fuck that. Socially distance all you want.

redcarbluecar · 04/07/2021 16:11

Hugging became ‘ok’ again in May. Not everyone I know wants to do it (perhaps they’ve not missed it!) but I’m doing it where I can, if people don’t run fast enough 😀 Most people I know have been double vaccinated now, those who haven’t aren’t highly vulnerable to serious illness and I think it’s perfectly natural to want physical contact again. Having said that, making weird comments to you is a bit out of order. It’s personal choice.

MiddleParking · 04/07/2021 16:31

I would have zero time for anyone turning up at a family party now and expecting social distancing or making a point of refusing normal social conventions.

2021DNA · 04/07/2021 16:40

Yes. I had to go to the supermarket yesterday and no one was keeping their distance or wearing a mask. It’s appalling that the stores are doing nothing to protect customers.

Regardless of what you think about Covid, social distancing or masks, you can’t put your wants over other people’s needs.

IcedPurple · 04/07/2021 17:23

You expect shops to employ staff to patrol the aisles enforcing 'social distancing'?

I highly doubt that 'nobody' was wearing a mask though.

Whatalottachocca · 04/07/2021 17:25

No one in my circle of friends, relatives or colleagues is social distancing. It's wonderful!

I've just come home from Tesco Extra and apart from me, I only saw one person unmasked and she was staff. Are you sure nobody was wearing one or are you exaggerating a tiny bit?

Supermarket staff should not be expected to confront people for not following guidance. They've suffered abuse and attacks for attempting to do so over the past year - no way should they be expected to enforce rules a fortnight before they're due to end.

TheVampiresWife · 04/07/2021 17:29

OP are you vulnerable in any way? Are you vaccinated? I can't imagine why you wouldn't want to hug or kiss loved ones anyway but especially if your answers are no and yes respectively.

isthisouting · 04/07/2021 17:30

Never stopped the hugs, mainly because my family/friends were comfortable with it and also these hugs tend to be quite brief!

Ifitquacks · 04/07/2021 17:34

Have I fallen asleep and woken up back in the summer of 2020?
With regards to ‘is this the norm now?’... hugging and getting within 2m has, for most people, always been the norm. It was temporarily advised against (never made illegal) and then in May this year that advice changed. So thankfully, those who want to can go back to the very human ‘norm’ of getting close to the people they love.

Mrsjayy · 04/07/2021 17:35

What not 1 person had a mask on except you obviously Hmm. .I was in a supermarket today and there was masks AND social distancing at tills I must live in a different universe from that poster !

osbertthesyrianhamster · 04/07/2021 17:46

It’s appalling that the stores are doing nothing to protect customers.

Then obviously their feedback is that most customers don't give a fuck about the ridiculous social distancing anymore, so they're letting customers do as they please. Yay! It's not the shop's job to 'protect' me from Covid. I can do that myself.

So glad when all these restrictions are gone.

TheVampiresWife · 04/07/2021 17:46

All the frothing about masks and SD in the last few days does feel quite retro doesn't it?!

TempsPerdu · 04/07/2021 17:47

Hopefully.

Complete with the faux naive 'Am I confused, or have all restrictions been dropped?' and the self-righteous 'I will continue to wear a mask because I'm not a selfish covidiot and I care about others.'

Knock yourselves out.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 04/07/2021 17:50

I walk out of shops where you're barked at about one way and fucking social distancing. They can be socially distanced from my money.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 04/07/2021 17:52

For real, Iced. Don't forget 'irresponsible' and 'I'm appalled, speechless . . . ' A lot of these people would make great Catholics Grin.

Elys3 · 04/07/2021 17:53

You may have attracted comments because ordinarily you are a tactile person and your family are a sad because they want to hug you. It’s fine to do as you feel comfortable though.

I feel almost nostalgic... I might start a thread about the perils of eating crisps on a park bench.
TheVampiresWife · 04/07/2021 17:54

@IcedPurple expect hair dye and chocolate to become granny killing contraband any time now!

And milk.

What are people going to do when they no longer get to call people 'selfish' for doing perfectly normal things? And when they no longer get to police what is and is not 'essential'?

osbertthesyrianhamster · 04/07/2021 17:56

Never mind all the ads in Scotland about still meeting up outside even if double jabbed and the gal walks into the sunshine in this massive garden in the sunshine. In the West in a flat and clouds of midgies, too bad! 'Let's' make safer choices . . . ' Let's fuck you off.
TheVampiresWife · 04/07/2021 17:56

@Ifitquacks or maybe warning that police will stop you and ask to see your supermarket receiptnif you're outside/arrest you for being in possession of non essential milk you've nipped to the shop for.

I had a look back at some of the old threads the other day and was gobsmacked, I tell thee.

They're now too busy fining everyone they see in case they should be isolating.
