Has your dc's school gone back to masks in class?

Just that really

My sons' school has decided to go back to masks in class and I wondered whether many other schools were doing the same

I understand the reasoning behind it (rising cases locally etc) but it feels like such a backward step, particularly with all the talk about opening up, big events taking place etc

Yes we are from Monday.

Things opening up are outdoors mainly. Finally PHE are acknowledging that school classrooms are the perfect conditions for spreading covid. Masks are pretty much all we can do.

MayorMumbum · 26/06/2021 07:26

Yep. They only had them off for two weeks before they were back on again.

0None0 · 26/06/2021 07:32

Yes. We had a massive covid outbreak in our school. We were closed completely by PHE within 2 weeks of masks coming off. It was plain stupid to remove masks in schools.

Open agsin now, in compulsory full time masks, but the ramifications of our outbreak go on, the circles are still spreading outward, and we have 2 teenagers still very ill, and at least one bereaved

I’m a teacher. My LEA didn’t stop and we aren’t even in the North.

Landlubber2019 · 26/06/2021 07:36

Yes

LadyCatStark · 26/06/2021 07:39

They never stopped in Lancashire. They were told on the Monday morning that masks were meant to stop that they were to carry on wearing them. I posted about it on here and was completely roasted despite all threads about adults wearing masks ending with most people agreeing they can’t stand them! 🤷‍♀️

KateTheEighth · 26/06/2021 07:41

Thanks all

We live in the south on the borders of 3 counties and none of the other local schools are going back to masks (yet...) so I just wondered if this was unusual but it sounds like it's not

Yes, from Monday. They stopped wearing masks when they started back for the current term, but we had an email yesterday.

Hamnet · 26/06/2021 07:44

I wish my kids’ school had kept mask because we have now had an outbreak and the lack of masks means the whole bloody year has to self isolate for 8 days. No leaving the house. Masks would have prevented that for all but the closest contacts of the positive cases.

HunkyPunk · 26/06/2021 07:44

Meant to say we're in the S/S.W.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 26/06/2021 07:47

I have no idea. DD puts on her mask when she leaves the house and takes it off when she comes back, even though there's no requirement outside the school gates.

SushiGo · 26/06/2021 07:52

Yes, they did after half term and a number of cases in the no mask period.

They are effective in schools where hardly anyone is vaccinated. It's not the same as events for adults where most people are at least partly vaccinated.

I get It's frustrating though. I wish they would get on with vaccinating children. Kids in America started being vaccinated months ago.

It’s not really a reverse step as just correcting a monumentally stupid decision that should never have been made.
Whyarewehardofthinking · 26/06/2021 08:19

We didn't stop wearing them. In fact our student council brought it up when the announcement was made as they wanted to continue with them in lessons and corridors. Our school community has been hit hard with deaths of parents (one as recent as last month) and numerous grandparents, plus a teacher in our MAT and they are scared of taking it home. We are in Manchester.

OnTheBrink1 · 26/06/2021 17:08

Ours are back here (secondary in SE)

Baileysforchristmas · 26/06/2021 17:09

No

Kitcat122 · 26/06/2021 19:11

Yes

User5827372728 · 26/06/2021 19:14

Yes in large inner city Bristol school

Hm2020 · 26/06/2021 19:18

My ds is in primary but his hole school is closed due to multiple cases in every year Sad

DrunkenKoala · 26/06/2021 20:16

Yes, when they went back after half term. There was quite a big outbreak before half term so school reinstated them. Luckily it all seems to have calmed down now and we’ve not heard of anymore cases.

Pengwyn · 26/06/2021 20:19

No, thank god

1happyhippie · 26/06/2021 20:20

Yes. Ours returned to wearing them last Monday.
We are in cumbria and have had quite high numbers.
Our le advised all 12-30 yr olds to get a pcr test last week. They are finding a lot of cases in school age now

LadyPenelope68 · 26/06/2021 20:21

West Yorkshire here, we’ve not stopped mask wearing in schools.

Randominternetbitch · 26/06/2021 20:24

Ours did briefly for about a week after the half term but they’re now back to masks only in corridors. There’s been no cases (yet!). My daughter’s class were sent home to self isolate after a kid did the orange juice trick on the LFT. PCRs came back negative so back they went, only off 2 days thank God.

Maxtry · 26/06/2021 20:24

We had an outbreak in year 7 and public health brought in a series of measures for year groups still in school...this is one of them.....think its till end of term
