TV doctor Dr Rosemary Leonard told BBC Breakfast it was “ridiculous” that whole classes – and even year groups – are being sent home to self-isolate when one child tests positive for Covid.

She said it was unfair on children, adding: “It’s not prioritising them or their education.

We've got to stop being scared... unnecessarily, disproportionately scared of Covid......"

“It’s as if nobody is caring… and looking at this in a balanced way"

I agree 100% with this.

Dentist all dc done too (tg)

So wish that was the case everywhere. Our original appointment April 20 has now been cancelled and rearranged four times. Partly covid, partly because my dentist took the decision to drop down to 2 days a week and no one else can take on her caseload apparently so we all just have to be seen less often. No NHS availability anywhere else local. I don't even know where to start with how pissed off I am about it all.

With regards to the masks being removed from schools and the link to the cases soaring, how does that work in Scotland where masks in classes haven't been removed but cases are still rising? I think it was stated yesterday by sturgeon that they did a record number of testing which resulted in a large number of people testing positive. The Uk tests way more people than the rest of Europe which is going to result in more positive 'cases'.

Baileysforchristmas · 24/06/2021 07:58

My daughter doesn’t wear a mask now neither do her friends, none of them test anymore, guess what no cases, no ones sick, the school is fully open, not one child isolating, life feels normal.

Pinuporc · 24/06/2021 08:31

When GPs get back to normal maybe her opinion will be valid.

I very much doubt she is responsible for whether all GPs see patients f2f. (I thought GPs were under PHE guidance?)
...but she is probably paid to have an opinion on tv...

OnTheBrink1 · 24/06/2021 09:38

@toocold54 they are already coming back. My DC large secondary has reinstated them at all times with immediate effect today.
I suspect more schools will follow this week and next

Enjoy it whilst it lasts!

150 schools in my area, all of them open. Hopefully the school will last until they break up in a couple of weeks time.

NotAncientHistory · 24/06/2021 10:36

Local school has 3 year groups out in area with previously consistently low case numbers (not any more).
That school ditched the masks when BJ said they could. Other local schools kept the masks and have done much better.
Obviously kids in school with masks on is better than kids sat on their own at home in isolation without masks.
They need to reintroduce masks for the time being and stop this mass self-isolation.
Vaccinate over12s who want to be vaccinated (starting with CV and CEV) and once all adults have been offered 2 vaccines stop the school restrictions (apart from confirmed cases).

I agree op!

It's becoming ridiculous

I agree 100% with this.

Whether or not people agree/disagree, it's important to point out that she isn't remotely an expert here.

Far too many people are easily impressed when someone has a "Dr" title and I say that as a Doctor lol.

All she knows about covid, she'll have learned from the same channels as the general public.

I agree that we shouldn't be sending whole year groups home when one child tests +ve, but this is a consequence of a number of other policy failures on covid - in particular a failure to properly fund blended learning and fund proper safeguards in schools such as decent ventilation.

shetlandponies · 24/06/2021 15:23

@Thewiseoneincognito

Sorry but she’s only a GP, her opinion means zilch she’s been brought on to stir up the masses which it appears has worked- y’all be agreeing with her like she’s the Pope. Her opinions and ideas alleviate a tricky situation for working parents but isn’t actually sound advice in the control of infection during a pandemic. Has Marsha been on yet? 👀
She's a gp so therefore a medical professional so I think her opinions are indeed valid, more valid than most people on here that's for sure

And why are you stalking @MarshaBradyo ? Bit odd of you

Thewiseoneincognito · 24/06/2021 15:47

@shetlandponies didn’t you know, I’m very odd. 🙄

Rest assured though, I’m not stalking her at all. She just seems to be on every coronavirus thread, often before I am, she’s very quick.

As for the GP lady, being a GP does not mean she is an epidemiologist nor an advisor to the government. Her opinion is just that, an opinion whether she has a phd or not so it’s no different to your GP saying to you over a zoom appointment how they feel about class isolations. Her words are quite dangerous considering she isn’t privy to the data and statistics the government has.
