AZ vaccine and periods

I had my second AZ vaccine on Monday and, after about 6 months of no periods (menopausal), I have started bleeding today. Coincidence or could it be vaccine related? Anyone else’s periods been affected?

Had both AZ vaccines periods as normal no change here

Ceara · 30/05/2021 11:57

I had the first dose in April. My periods have since gone to hell in a hand cart. First period after vaccine was a couple of days early, long and heavy. I got nosebleeds as well.
And now I've had a pre-menstrual migraine and light bleeding start 21 days after the first post-jab period. My normal cycle length is a clockwork regular 29 days. I am in my 40s so it could be perimenopause but it's a heck of a coincidence.
Lots of women are reporting menstrual irregularities - including women who have passed menopause, suddenly having a period. Apparently it's a thing with the vaccines - the immune response/ inflammation can affect our cycles. Will settle down again.
I just wish this stuff was on the patient info leaflet so it wasn't a surprise or cause for alarm.

Just had a 19 day period after my 2nd Pfizer after the first one I had two really heavy painful periods. I'm 37

Thanks all Smile

I had my first dose 9 weeks ago and I've had 4 periods since. They're coming fortnightly and getting heavier. I'm worried about booking my second dose as I don't know if it will make it worse.

Purpletomato · 30/05/2021 13:24

Oh and each of the fortnightly periods has come with full PMT, migraines, the lot. It's weird.

Peppapeg · 30/05/2021 13:26

Any vaccine can, menstrual cycles can be affected by a surprising amount of things.

cornflake12 · 30/05/2021 13:28

I wouldn't @Purpletomato

@peppapeg - I never knew that about vaccines and periods.

Anecdotally I have heard of this happening. And media coverage indicates you’re not alone: www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/05/17/period-came-back-having-coronavirus-vaccine-post-menopausal/

How this wasn’t flagged up in the trials is staggering. Though given the history of the medical profession ignoring and sidelining women’s issues, sadly I can’t say I’m surprised.

I really hope your issue is resolved.

Thelm · 30/05/2021 19:41

Had both AZ. No change. I have heard about a few people having the same as you though.

DiscoStusMoonboots · 30/05/2021 19:44

My cycles are irregular anyway (around 29-37 days), but after my first dose of AZ I didn't have a period for 65 days. And when it DID come, it was horrendous - so so heavy and draining. Lasted twice as long as my periods normally do, too. Roll on jab number 2...

Marmite27 · 30/05/2021 19:48

Mine was a day or two late, but I was expecting that as I was 2 days early last month due to the stress of a family members shock cancer diagnosis.

Lasted the same time and same flow as normal. I was expecting changes due to everything I’d read, but nothing to report from me.

Lanique · 30/05/2021 21:06

Yes - a heavy and quite full one (clotty and dark blood - sorry if tmi) just ten days after my previous one (which arrived the day after my jab). I'm off for an ultrasound week after next to check me out but I'm sure it had something to do with my jab. Have had a couple of mild nosebleeds too.

Lanique · 30/05/2021 21:06

*full ON one

WaverleyPirate · 30/05/2021 21:31

Same has happened to me after first AZ dose. Went through menopause and last period in 2017. Hey presto, a week or so after first vaccine I got a period which lasted for four or five days.

I'm getting it checked out later this week in case it is something else a bit more nasty.

BarbaraofSeville · 30/05/2021 21:49

Since my first vac I've had a 34 day period interval and a 20 day period interval after a couple of 28-30 day period intervals pre vac but I'm 47 and almost certainly peri menopausal and before the few months of reasonably regular periods I didn't have one at all for about 8 months so what is normal for me is anyone's guess, so it's hard to say if the vaccination has anything to do with it.

In my case it could equally be causation or correlation.

Thanks for the latest replies.
@WaverleyPirate - I hope your appointment goes well and all is good.
I’m wondering if it’s it worth reporting this as a possible side effect?

Roonerspismed · 30/05/2021 22:59

I believe a study is being done onto this. Can you please please yellow card it?

Inastatus · 30/05/2021 23:01

@Roonerspismed - yes, I will. Thanks for letting me know about the study.

Age 62. Post menopause 2 years+. Second vaccine last week and VERY unexpected bleed this weekend. Had no idea this might be a ‘thing’.

WaverleyPirate · 31/05/2021 00:32

Thanks Smile

I've already yellow carded my symptoms.

MoiraQueen · 31/05/2021 00:43

Yes. No period for 5mths, usual menopausal symptoms. Had my last hot flush the morning of the vaccine, ovary and joint pain the evening of the vaccine. Joint pain, sore breasts for the following two weeks and then my period arrived. The vaccine (AZ) was 2mths ago, I still have muscle and joint pain and my menopausal symptoms haven't returned. Wish I'd never taken it. No idea what to do about having my second.

CosmoMint · 31/05/2021 09:38

I would like to know if apart from affecting periods, does the AZ jab also affect hormones which has a knock on affect on women that are going through the perimenopause? Has anyone noticed new peri symptoms or worsening peri symptoms since having the jab?

Roonerspismed · 31/05/2021 09:41

In a similar way, I would like to understand the corresponding impact on fertility. Are we looking at a few months of messed up cycles or more?
