AZ vaccine and periods

I had my second AZ vaccine on Monday and, after about 6 months of no periods (menopausal), I have started bleeding today. Coincidence or could it be vaccine related? Anyone else’s periods been affected?

@Roonerspismed

In a similar way, I would like to understand the corresponding impact on fertility. Are we looking at a few months of messed up cycles or more?
Caveated with I'm not claiming to know the answer, but from reading previous scientific papers (not related to covid jabs but immunisations in general), the main hypothesis for why this happens is because every cell in the body more or less can provide an immune response, and the lining of the womb can shed as a result of this, rather than it being a change of cycle itself. If that makes sense. But worth researching and reading through if interested to draw own thoughts.

Have a search through previous threads, there was one a couple of months back where a lot of women were reporting the same thing. I think it would be nice to be warned of this instead of causing unnecessary alarm and rushing out to buy pregnancy tests (as I did!)

RedcurrantPuff · 31/05/2021 10:28

I had my first dose in Feb and haven’t had a period since. But then I am 48 so that’s not unexpected I guess.

Roonerspismed · 31/05/2021 10:50

Well it would be less worrying if it was a shedding of the lining as a one off

But the scores of reports of disruption are very worrying as that is a direct impact on fertility surely

But it’s just “women”s troubles” do not even discussed

"the main hypothesis for why this happens is because every cell in the body more or less can provide an immune response, and the lining of the womb can shed as a result of this"
What are the implications for women in the first trimester of pregnancy, or TTC? I'm in the 40s and needed IVF to get pregnant in my 40s so not an issue for me but if I was in early stages of pregnancy, or trying, I think I would find this all quite worrying.

Just had second vaccine. I will let you know if I have any further post menopausal period!

Inastatus · 31/05/2021 15:07

I was woken up with the worst cramps ever last night - worse than any period I’ve ever had. I never take painkillers but had to take ibuprofen. Thankfully ok today but still bleeding fairly heavily.

Had my first dose 16 April. Normal period a week or so later, normal period the following month, then I've just had a period arrive 12 days early. Not sure if it's vaccine related, but I'm usually very regular so 🤷🏻‍♀️

DeclineandFall · 01/06/2021 17:09

I'm 52. Had mild covid last March. My period was 2 weeks late and very heavy and clotty. Then they settled down again to normal. No problem with the AZ vaccine though.

gamerchick · 01/06/2021 17:27

I got my period around 4 days after both jabs. The second one was really early, took my by surprise.

Since our reproductive system is connected to our immune system it's not surprising. Annoying though.

Vickles20 · 01/06/2021 17:33

My cycle was definitely effected after my first az vaccine. Felt poorly for about 3 weeks. It felt like my peri-menopausal symptoms went into over drive. Palpitations. Aswell as feeling completely done in. Like being pregnant tired.

Had my second AZ vaccine last week. No effects at all. Period came when it should’ve done. No effects at all

Inastatus · 01/06/2021 22:30

Thanks for the latest replies. I feel reassured that it’s not an uncommon thing to happen.

Had my first AZ 3 weeks ago, period arrived as normal, no change.

I've been having weird bleeds the past few weeks (since possibly 12th but maybe 17th May, periods all over the place due to various meds I'm on) which I thought was odd but as I am waiting to be treated to remove a polyp and fibroid as these have been found to be causing the extremely heavy periods. It suddenly dawned on me last night that this latest bleeding might not be a period as such but due to having the AZ vaccination on April 24th.
I am having days and days of light spotting, think it's about to finish and the bam! super heavy flooding with clots. On the 17th I was due to go out with my ed but had to cancel as went through an Always nighttime pad every hour for about 5 hours. Then had another week of light bleeding and then again on 24th May really heavy bleeding. 29th same again, light all day flooding pm. Same again yesterday. Is this a similar pattern to what other people have been experiencing?
I've just filled out a yellow card report about it. I am a bit worried that this will happen again after my second vaccination in July.

WaverleyPirate · 03/06/2021 20:18

All clear for me. Saw consultant and apparently nothing to do with the vaccine.

LovelyLadyLily · 03/06/2021 23:53

Yes a lot of menopausal women are experiencing bleeds. It's definitely related to the vaccine - don't be fobbed off.

I'm younger but it's fucked up my period. I had the first one post vaccine about 10 days early and it was awful and painful, and although subsequent ones have been more on time (though a bit irregular) they've been horribly painful with very weird bleeding. I 100% think it's the vaccine. I'm on one now and have barely been able to move for 3 days.
