Anyone else on the countdown to going away and dreading a last minute illness or self isolation?

We go away on Friday (UK, self contained accommodation etc) and its been a long time coming but I am dreading a last minute "problem"

DC1 said they all had their temperature taken today as one of the kids in his class felt hot (child was sent home as he did indeed have a temperature) and it just highlights to be how close we are to having the rug pulled from under us.

2 days and 2 different settings to keep 3 kids 'healthy'

yup. small child off school yesterday with a cough and I was dreading that the PCR might be positive and scupper our 3 days away over half term. thankfully negative.

Crunchymum · 25/05/2021 21:00

Apologies to anyone who has already had to cancel their breaks. I am not meaning to be insensitive and whilst I know a holiday is not a right, we really bloody need a break.

Yes we’re the same! Just cancelled my eldest going to a gun class on thurs as worried he’ll have to isolate during half term and we are desperate to go away. 2 kids 2 different settings! 🤞🏾🤞🏾

Phew.

At least it was negative.

We had to get DC2 tested last week (negative and a really fast turnaround on the test) but id hate to have to have a pcr test at the eleventh hour.

Ooh a gym class not a gun class!!!

Gym class sounds a lot less dangerous than gun class Grin

Not a holiday, but the third attempt at my daughter's baptism is in two weeks' time and really hoping nothing scuppers us this time

AdaFuckingShelby · 25/05/2021 21:23

I'm in this position. DD sent some to self isolate last week, her isolation ends in time for us to go away. Unless she develops symptoms then we've got to isolate, in which case we'll miss part or all of our holiday . I'm on tenter hooks!

KarenOkefe · 25/05/2021 21:24

Indeed, it's a great worry isnt it? My family and I are going away camping on friday in Essex, decided to take lateral flow tests early so if it comes back positive we'll have time to order a pcr.

Timeforabiscuit · 25/05/2021 21:26

I was so vigilant for covid messing up our weekend away, but then dh had his first seizure two days before we were due to go.

If you want to make God laugh Hmm - but I think I've covered at least ten families worth of bad luck so I have my fingers crossed for you!

hoorayhenryy · 25/05/2021 21:26

Christ. No gun classes please Grin

Yes, I took mine out before Christmas to avoid any isolation periods then. I'm wondering whether to just keep them home the next couple of days tbh. We're really looking forward to getting away.

Thewiseoneincognito · 25/05/2021 21:30

Yes it’s like being in one of those dreams when time seems to stand still. Get. To. Saturday 🙏🏻

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/05/2021 21:30

Yes, we go away Monday. Friday is inset day so just 2 more days to get through!

FedNlanders · 25/05/2021 21:31

Yes. 4 kids ugh. Already been 2 cases in the secondary school

Roblockedin · 25/05/2021 21:36

We had drama in October half term. We knew that 2 bubbles were awaiting pcr results but that only one of them would mean isolation for dd. We were half an hour into our trip when we heard that one of them had come back positive but we didn’t know which one so pulled over and frantically refreshed emails until we got the all clear.

Nightmare. But the way of the world for a while I think

DancesWithDaffodils · 25/05/2021 21:38

I was a bit blase about it all, until 2 local schools completly shut yesterday.
3 schools between us 🤞

And just getting to Friday isnt enough - if someone feels ill on Friday, they could test Sat, result Sun......

Crunchymum · 25/05/2021 21:42

It's no way to live is it?

I'm already thinking about scenarios X Y and Z.

We are leaving Friday morning and will be at our destination by 3pm so any illness or self isolation after that would throw a real spanner in the works. Actually that is another concern, what the Hell happens in that situation?

Crunchymum · 25/05/2021 21:43

On the upside cases are really low here. 9/100k

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 25/05/2021 21:51

Yep! I'm feeling exactly the same

Due to go away on Friday. Re booked from last year with my parents..

I need this, my family needs this but more importantly my child needs this.

I don't think his mental health can handle much more. He's only 9.

If we get that email from school before we set off I will be absolutely devastated for him

Stopsnowing · 25/05/2021 21:54

Christmas was scuppered due to bubble at school bursting on last day of school while they were watching a video!
Fingers crossed for half term and planning to take dc out of school a week early so summer hols not scuppered!

AzureTwist · 25/05/2021 22:03

It is awful. We issued half-term due to a child isolating as class bubble popped. Whole of half-term inside.

We are not going away, but it could be that people travel and on the Sun hear there is a positive case? What would people do if on holiday accommodation or staying with family?

Crunchymum · 25/05/2021 22:04

We had to isolate over Xmas too. We got the message on the 21st December.

The schools last day was the 17th yet we were told to isolate for 10 days from the date of the email (so until 31st December)

i just checked the message and it definitely said positive case on 16/17th Dec and kids had to isolate for 10 days until 31st Dec

Yes we go away Friday morning, keeping everything crossed🤞🙏

eastegg · 25/05/2021 22:40

Feeling the same as you OP. In my case it's a very long awaited trip to see my parents who haven't seen all their grandchildren since last July. A bubble bursting at my middle DC's school (different year group) gave me the wobbles today. Parents are in the NW so if often feels like fate has it in for us 🤞

feelinggeriatric · 25/05/2021 22:44

We go away Monday. I'd like to take dd out but she's not having it and they're doing lots of assessments. One of her friends went home sick today, this was only mentioned in passing over dinner....

I'll be beyond devastated if we can't go. Tempted to turn off all my phones on Saturday and not answer the door (I wouldn't, but I'm tempted ...!)
