Anyone else on the countdown to going away and dreading a last minute illness or self isolation?

We go away on Friday (UK, self contained accommodation etc) and its been a long time coming but I am dreading a last minute "problem"

DC1 said they all had their temperature taken today as one of the kids in his class felt hot (child was sent home as he did indeed have a temperature) and it just highlights to be how close we are to having the rug pulled from under us.

2 days and 2 different settings to keep 3 kids 'healthy'

We're staying in a b&b so I have no idea what happens if we get a notification while there !!

breadwidow · 25/05/2021 23:00

Yep, going to see family for part of half term, leaving Tuesday morning. Was feeling quite relaxed but today found out my son has to self isolate due to case not in his class, but other class in year group but he has been identified as contact of the case. I don't know who is the positive case so not sure what contact means in this context. Could be that they play together outside only, in which case lower risk. Anyway this kid has not been in contact with my son since last Thursday so Isolation ends Sunday in time for our trip, just crossing everything that he doesn't get symptoms in the mean time. I'm trying to prepare for worst but still hope we can go

Vanillaradio · 25/05/2021 23:52

Been there- we had to cancel our holiday in summer as our isolation ended on the Tuesday (fortunately we had 2 weeks off and found something for the second week although it was basically what was left

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 26/05/2021 00:08

It hadn't crossed my mind til this pm when my friend found out she had to SI til next Monday for a contact last Friday and now reading this.
Dd1's class Oct HT & DD2's class at Christmas - I'm now gonna be irrationally worried for the next week - there have been 0 cases in school since Christmas....surely not 😱😱😱
Dd1 is going for her birthday treat with my parents when they both get back from their dads and I have 2 days off with dd2 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

No, because thats the risk we take. It's nothing personal, it's just the way things are in this pandemic situation. Might get to Spain this year for a few days, might not. Not bothered either way shrugs

Appreciate that some people aren't fussed but for us a holiday is something we've all been looking forward to since January. The kids are all very excited, we've taken annual leave / made bookings etc and we'd be more than upset to have to cancel at eleventh hour. It's no mean feat to take my lot on holiday.... takes a lot of leg work (DC3 is disabled)

I've managed the kids expectations as much as I can but they are still relatively young and will be gutted.

Am trying to be positive though. We've had zero cases in school this year (2021) and even if we do get hit with a last minute SI, then one of us will stay home. Just praying for no symptoms Shock

Sorry "not fussed" maybe isn't the correct term.

I am sure you'd prefer to have a break than not. Some people are more easy going?

I'm feeling extremely tense about today's round of LFTs (Wednesdays and Sundays for DS secondary) and will only relax once it's business as usual in school tomorrow.

We've got a week in a cottage with my Mum over half term, moved from last year, and although we've seen her a few times it's always been hunched in the cold in her garden (even when we went last August it was bloody freezing!). Really really hoping we'll be able to have a proper relaxing week away with her.

storminabuttercup · 26/05/2021 08:22

Good question unthread about what happens if you're already away. Not just with schools, say you're contract traced to a restaurant but you're on holiday do you isolate there or come home?

KatChocolate · 26/05/2021 08:28

@AdaFuckingShelby just going off topic slightly but throughout my whole life I’ve said ‘tender hooks’ Blush every day’s a school day! 😆

Love your username btw!

mightyducks · 26/05/2021 08:31

Yes where I am lots of parents have taken their kids out of school this week as they are desperate to get away next week and with the rate of kids being asked to isolate, I can’t blame them

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 26/05/2021 12:47

Wish I had taken him out to be honest. Oh well too late now!

JocastaNu · 26/05/2021 12:48

Yeah we're going camping straight after school on Friday and I've just heard that several school staff are off sick.

We don't have a mobile signal in the very remote campsite so I'm not sure what happens if the alert comes out over the weekend, as we won't receive it.

I'm dreading the disappointment on the DC's faces if we can't go. It will be awful.

daisybrown37 · 26/05/2021 12:57

We were supposed to be heading to Disneyland Paris on Saturday but clearly that is not happening! I booked a back up UK based holiday and we can cancel the hotel at anytime up to the day of arrival, but I won’t believe we are going until we are there! We have 2 in primary in a London Borough where there is surge testing (not Hounslow.)

I got a text from the school earlier and thought here we go, but it was just a general text!

daisybrown37 · 26/05/2021 12:58

I have said to the boys if we go away, rather than a definite as I couldn’t face their disappointment.

Crunchymum · 26/05/2021 13:02

Bit of a curveball but I've heard a few kids pulled out today with vomiting (I'm an emetophobe so this is the pinnacle for me) but touch wood isn't any of my kids classes....

This thread is making me want to go and get them from school right now!

Ohdofuckofdear · 26/05/2021 13:15

Yes us,uk holiday too OP and were due to go away in the next couple of weeks and it's a big deal for us because we didn't go last year and we've had to move the holiday from april this year to june.

We usually go every Easter and see my MIL and FIL,we haven't seen them since 2019 and this past week I've been really ill I've caught sodding flu(definitely not covid)and on top of the holiday it's our DD's 18th birthday and were going to see our DGrandson(2 hours away)before we go on holiday and I need to get well and I need that to happen now.

I usually really look forward to our Easter holiday and seeing my inlaws but this year all I keep doing is worrying about it!

usernotfound0000 · 26/05/2021 13:26

We are heading South at the weekend, DD2 has a cold with a cough. Needed to test her yesterday, was almost certain it was just a cold but couldn't sleep last night whilst waiting for results. Thankfully negative! Fingers crossed for no more problems!

Mrsfrumble · 26/05/2021 13:43

Yes! We’re going to see my mum for the first time in 14 months! She lives 175 miles away and has been shielding, but is fully vaccinated now and can’t wait to hug the children.

There haven’t been any cases at their school since December, so fingers crossed...

Horst · 26/05/2021 13:59

We cancelled but there is at least 4 children coughing but not being sent home to test in one year group at our school.

KatherineOfGaunt · 27/05/2021 09:24

Teacher here. Positive child in class so now self-isolating until the Friday of half-term. Missing a family holiday in Wales. Gutted.

Crunchymum · 28/05/2021 07:03

I'm so sorry to hear that @KatherineOfGaunt

Selfishly I didn't even think of you poor teachers on this situation.

It's shit you are having to miss your holiday, I hope you are able to have a nice enough time at home (lots of rest and recuperation etc...)

FWIW we have made it and barring an email to self isolate in the next few hours then we'll be off later this morning.
