Masks in cinema

Do you need to keep them on when watching the film or can you use eating and drinking as an excuse to keep them off

@Volhhg

I suspect that is because cinema sales were so pitiful when they reopened. And also cinemas not following correct procedure for taking personal details and people giving fake details
Depends on the cinema, ours was only bookable online and paid by card so they had your card details, name etc. Then had to scan the NHS app before entering so it was pretty good.

I love going to the cinema

I will not be going if I have to wear a mask while watching a film

southeastdweller · 17/05/2021 11:11

Depends on the venue but I won't be wearing one so fuck their rules.

Polkadotties · 17/05/2021 11:11

I won’t go to the cinema while I have to wear a mask.
If people are so concerned about the absolute tiny risk of covid being spread in a cinema then maybe they shouldn’t be going to the cinema for the meanwhile.

Volhhg · 17/05/2021 11:20

Yes I guess they have slightly different rules then. So you could only attend this cinema if you had the NHS trace and track app? Usually there's and option to give your details. Which cinema was this?

Mine was the local Odeon. They had a lady standing at the entrance and you had to scan the NHS app and sanitise before going in. I'm hoping it hasn't changed when we go back Smile

We have a wee local one we go to (going tonight!) And it's just keep masks on if you're not eating or drinking. Also ours block off the seats around you so we're the only people in our row and it's staggered.

Silverparting · 17/05/2021 15:56

We last went in October and were required to wear masks while seated.

Every other roe of seats was out of use so we had lots of space.

Gutted as one of our cinemas has now closed permanently due to the pandemic.

Silverparting · 17/05/2021 15:56

Row

SmidgenofaPigeon · 17/05/2021 15:58

I will be keeping my mask on- until I’m seated. I’ll then put it on again to leave the cinema.

purplehulahoop · 17/05/2021 16:04

I wouldn't wear a mask while watching the film so I won't be going until we no longer have to.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 17/05/2021 16:10

@gurglebelly

And this is why I won't be going near a cinema for sometime
Us neither.

I thought the distance was irrelevant after fifteen minutes anyway.

Flowerlane · 17/05/2021 16:36

We have tickets for the cinema next week. Masks need to be worn when inside unless eating or drinking. We are having a huge tub of popcorn so it lasts the whole filmGrin

Cinema states it is not selling all tickets so to limit numbers so there is space between each group/family.

I see the cinema the same as being in a restaurant when you are seated you can remove your mask.

newnortherner111 · 17/05/2021 16:45

Been to the cinema this afternoon, face coverings worn except when eating and drinking, and by all the staff there.

valnevavaxx · 17/05/2021 16:50

Fine if you don't want to wear a mask for a whole film, but in that case you shouldn't be going to the cinema.

Trying to figure out loopholes to not wear them when you've been asked to is shameful. Staff at cinemas have to wear masks all day, the least you can do is pop one on during a film for them.

CharlotteRose90 · 17/05/2021 16:53

I love going to cinema. I’ll wear my mask till I’m seated then I’ll be taking it off for the film. I have drinks and popcorn or sweets . If I wanted to wear a mask I’d watch a film at home.

valnevavaxx · 17/05/2021 16:54

I think you mean if you don't want to wear a mask you'd watch a film at home @CharlotteRose90, because at home you don't have to wear one whereas at the cinema you do?

Flowerlane · 17/05/2021 16:56

@valnevavaxx if you sit in a restaurant you don’t have to wear a mask even when the staff brings the food and drinks over, sitting in the cinema is away from all members of staff once seated.

valnevavaxx · 17/05/2021 16:59

I don't think it matters what happens in restaurants when we're talking about the rule in cinemas @Flowerlane- it's not mandatory to go to the cinema yet, if you don't like the rules they have in place to keep their staff safe then don't go.

herecomesthsun · 17/05/2021 17:01

we will consider drive in movies, if they don't go on too late

Flowerlane · 17/05/2021 17:02

@valnevavaxx but it’s the same rule? Masks on unless eating or drinking. You eat and drink in a restaurant/pub and a majority eat or drink in the cinema.
It’s not mandatory to go to restaurants either but people are.

valnevavaxx · 17/05/2021 17:04

It might be the same rule but it's a completely different scenario so it's irrelevant here @Flowerlane. In a cinema you can eat or drink- most people are very unlikely to be eating for the entire 2 hours of a film with no breaks, but by the sounds of this thread people will be doing just that intentionally to get around the masks rule.

The rule in cinemas is you have to wear a mask except for when you're eating, and the expectation is when you're not eating your popcorn your mask is one. Lots of people on this thread insisting they'll have their mask off as soon as they're sat down, which is not in the spirit of the rule at all.

SwimBaby · 17/05/2021 17:05

I went quite a bit last year when cinemas briefly reopened and it seemed to be masks in the foyer area, mask in the cinema until it went dark and then nobody wore one.

Flowerlane · 17/05/2021 17:08

@valnevavaxx it seems most people on this thread and few others I have seen on other pages are seeing it the exact same as the restaurant/pub rule. We shall have to agree to disagree.

toocold54 · 17/05/2021 17:16

The students at my school have been wearing a mask all day every day for months and none of them complain about it.
I’m sure you’ll be ok wearing one for a 2 hour film.
