Do you need to keep them on when watching the film or can you use eating and drinking as an excuse to keep them off

I don't see any flippancy because I'm not being flippant.

Lots of people are going to hold off going back to inside venues, especially if they're vulnerable.

Cinema is quite fortunate in that it has a younger audience than theatre or classical music, say, so its audience may not be so put off.

It doesn't help the situation by pretending this isn't an issue though,or dismissing people whose opinions don't suit you as flippant.

And I'm not saying that other people shouldn't be going.

Aah just realised where some of the energy of this argument might be coming from.

So, I'm not saying,cinema isn't essential so they shouldn't re-open.

I'm saying that for me as someone shielding most of this year, cinema wouldn't be worth the risk.

I am fine popping into a store now to get a birthday present for my DC or ingredients for a birthday cake (whereas I did all my Christmas shopping on line and didn't go into a shop for 6 or 7 months).

But I can't justify for me as CEV going back into a cinema right now, although it is something that I would normally enjoy.

What I am doing is continuing to subscribe, for example to the National Theatre as a member, and to an arts festival which I can't attend, to help in a small way to keep them going, exactly because I want them still to be there when this is all over.

If other people want to keep going to inside venues then as things stand they of course can, and lets hope it works out?

herecomesthsun my DB is in a similar position, he’s also extremely vulnerable. He had a meal in a pub garden last week but that’s the first activity he’s done like that in over a year. He hasn’t been to the shops or the barbers but said he may get his hair cut soon. He’s nowhere near ready to go back to the cinema yet. Before COVID he’d go at least one every three weeks.

DollyParton2 · 18/05/2021 09:17

I go to an Everyman near me. So everyone on spaces our sofas anyway and Covid they block off ones in between. After the last lockdown with maybe about 10-15 of us in the whole screening room the owner doing his speech before film said we could remove masks if we wanted to. Given how spaced out we were and the airiness of the cinema I felt fine doing it.

GameSetMatch · 18/05/2021 09:18

I went in October in the Odeon you didn’t need to wear a mask whilst sitting down but in the VUE you did need to wear a mask. Don’t know if things have changed.

MarcelineMissouri · 18/05/2021 13:51

@herecomesthsun it’s the exact opposite of pretending it’s not an issue Grin. I KNOW it’s an issue, a big issue, we still have many sleepless nights over it because it’s not going away anytime soon. I just hope that enough people will return that industries are able to tick over until everyone feels comfortable again.

I do take it to heart because it’s our lives basically. So I guess it’s a case of completely understanding why a lot of people won’t feel comfortable returning to activities like this for a while longer but just feeling that when people talk about it they (in general, not specifically you) should be mindful of all the people behind these activities who remain petrified of the future of their jobs and industries and the umbrella term ‘non-essential’ does wind me up it is true! Because that’s all relative - it’s pretty essential to us!

We're going to the theatre on Saturday. Been told we have to keep our face masks on throughout the whole performance :( Will have to dig out my contact lenses or I won't be able to see a thing!

Pootle40 · 18/05/2021 14:24

@Nat6999

Hopefully only another 5 weeks & then no masks at all.
Hallelujah

@toocold54

I love going to the cinema

I will not be going if I have to wear a mask while watching a film

The students at my school have been wearing a mask all day every day for months and none of them complain about it.
I’m sure you’ll be ok wearing one for a 2 hour film.

Yeah but the difference is they need to go to school to learn. The cinema is for fun. I'm not paying for a fun experience, which, with a mask, would turn out to be anything but fun for me.
shewalkslikerihanna · 18/05/2021 20:03

@Oysterbabe

I won't be wearing mine while seated.
Exactly You don’t wear them in pubs or restaurants so why cinemas and theatres.

There were 4 people in our Vue way back in October No one was mask wearing
Sameshoe · 18/05/2021 20:25

We went to Vue and had to keep mask on unless eating/drinking. So I bought a massive drink.
Went to see Mortal Kombat and there was about 6 people including us. So I don’t feel guilty.
Not sure if we will be back if masks don’t go, it wasn’t fun.

Furrydog7 · 18/05/2021 20:46

I won't be paying to go to the cinema as it is meant to be fun and i won't enjoy myself whilst wearing a face covering.
