So, is Monday under threat? Change to school masks or hugs?

BJ should probably put the breaks on further lifting of restrictions for at least a couple of weeks - it wouldn't have a massive impact on our lives and the economy (2 weeks) but might be enough to put into place local measures to try and stamp out this new variant.

Try telling that to the businesses that have have spent money on preparing to open on Monday - I know a few who are on the verge of folding and need to open next week .

nordica · 14/05/2021 14:43

Why are people predicting the 5pm press conference will be a significant announcement?

They've been doing these press conferences several times a week for over a year now, most of the time it's just an update on things and nothing new is announced at all.

Mazblue86 · 14/05/2021 14:43

We are opened up aren't we? I go to work in a school with 1000 kids. If people think the children wearing masks is keeping people 'safe' they are totally deluded. Or at least have never met a teenager.

If schools are safe; everywhere is safe. I'll continue my life as usual whatever BoJo says. I think most of us are.

I don't really have any time for people who virtue signal about keeping us locked down forever but also buy into the nonsense that schools are safe and everywhere else isn't. I think they just secretly love a lockdown.

Indeed. My DS has spent what was left of his savings to prepare and advertise reopening on Monday.

@cuparfull

Its time all ethnicities start playing their part for the good of all and take the vaccine. That's what nobody wants to say....that some minorities put the wellbeing and livelihoods of us all at risk because of their selfishness.

Our children will be paying for this for years....we need to get real now.

How many people of "all ethnicities" have you actually spoken to about their decision not to/to have the vaccine?? Or did you just read a Daily Mail article?!
SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 14:47

@Leonardsgirl

I'm in London. I've just looked up the figures for my area. In total around 8% of the population in my borough have been diagnosed with Covid. The death rate is around 0.002%. Currently there are a tiny number of cases. More than 60% of adults have had their first vaccine.

If we don't carry on with the roadmap now, when do we start to live some sort of normal life again?

8% seems very high??? Or do you mean overall in the past?
MakkaPakkasSpongyThing · 14/05/2021 14:48

I guess the risk is - hospitalisations - even if the death rate is not as high. I’m going to listen very carefully and do exactly as I’m told - Mum has got her (delayed/potentially life saving) operation date in June. I don’t want it to be delayed again.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 14/05/2021 14:48

I don’t think he’ll call off Monday.

I think he’ll probably override the vaccines minister and say surge testing & vaccinations in the areas with cases.

And I expect June 21st might be pushed back so they’ll lay the groundwork for that. But I’m not expecting much else.

They made such a big deal out of hugging being allowed, I can’t see them stopping it.

DelBocaVista · 14/05/2021 14:49

Indeed. My DS has spent what was left of his savings to prepare and advertise reopening on Monday.

I hope it goes well for him. We've booked into as many local places as we can over the next few weeks. I'm desperate to support them!

Puttingouthefirewithgasoline · 14/05/2021 14:50

I am so nervous and upset after all the hard work most of us have put in since January all for this summer and ever more.

Puttingouthefirewithgasoline · 14/05/2021 14:51

^^ utterly ridiculous! Pushing physical contact.

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 14/05/2021 14:52

Front page of the Guardian now saying UK to allow surge vaccination in hotspots

Devlesko · 14/05/2021 14:53

It's all a load of propaganda anyway.
You can still get it after vacination, it's just assumed it wouldn't be so bad.
Making far too many people believe they are safe, just because they had the jab.

Me too. I won't use chain pubs, restaurants or personal care. I'm doing all I can to support local independent traders to get back on their feet

The big chains will survive, the self employed and the small business owners need all the support we can give them

TakeYourFinalPosition · 14/05/2021 14:54

@Puttingouthefirewithgasoline I’m not saying it’s wise. I won’t be hugging anyone... I’ve been trying to think of nice ways to avoid MiL since it was announced! She’s so excited for hugs. I’m not feeling it yet.

Puttingouthefirewithgasoline · 14/05/2021 14:55

? DEv, propganda?

The vacc will stop many strains putting you in hospital or dying, surely that = safe?

giraffelonglegs · 14/05/2021 14:55

I've already heard from my sons (secondary) school that masks now need to be kept on until end of Half Term. Local authority decision due to more cases

BountyIsUnderrated · 14/05/2021 14:56

Biscuit to all the pro lockdown people in this thread.

It's been over a year, time to get our lives back.
If you want to stay holed up at home for the rest of your life you're more than welcome to, I am living mine.

ChiefBabySniffer · 14/05/2021 14:56

@bluelemming

Mine on myGP has been live since the day the travel traffic light tiers thing was announced. I've attached a pic with my details blocked

BetterThanKleenex · 14/05/2021 14:57

There's no way this lockdown will be the last, I imagine he'll be suggesting local lockdowns (despite everyone with a brain saying they won't work) and possibly slowing down the next plans to observe things for a while. Load of bollocks though, they'll only be blaming us again when we've had no choice but to follow rules.

MakkaPakkasSpongyThing · 14/05/2021 14:57

I doubt he will say anything other than be cautious - particularly in the worst affected areas. My family situation means I need to be very cautious to support my Mum. I don’t think it’s fair to put that expectation on others though, such as the young who need to live their lives - those who are trying to save their businesses and livelihoods.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 14/05/2021 14:58

The B1.617.2 "India" variant is growing exponentially. We can't just let it rip. I think local lockdowns may take place.

BetterThanKleenex · 14/05/2021 14:59

I should add, lockdowns don't affect me much as I don't travel or go to pubs enough for it to affect me, but even I know this past year has been ridiculous. Every few months we'd get a taste of freedom only to be threatened with police force for stepping past our doorsteps a week later.

Devlesko · 14/05/2021 15:00

@Puttingouthefirewithgasoline

Being able to pass it on doesn't sound safe to me, vacinated or not. Too many have a false sense of security and expect to be protected, you can see those who have been vaccinated and hear them talking about how safe it all is now.
Leonardsgirl · 14/05/2021 15:00

SonnetforSpring I meant 8% in total. Total number of diagnosed cases to date is about 8% of the population. Current case numbers are less than 15 per 100,000.
