So, is Monday under threat? Change to school masks or hugs?

@AlmostSummer21 I'm not blaming Boris for people acting like idiots. And saying one rule for one and another rule for others is just a turn of phrase. Of course I know there aren't differing rules.

But Boris IS to blame for the shitty handling of the entire pandemic. And nothing he says on Monday will make any difference to how I intend to proceed.

Jaxhog · 14/05/2021 14:15

Well, I've been fully vaccinated and intend to carry on wearing a mask indoors ie. in shops, or in outdoor crowds. It's not a big deal

Westfacing · 14/05/2021 14:17

If there's something important to say why wait until 5pm? Just get on with it.

justasking111 · 14/05/2021 14:18
@justasking111

Well seeing them netting the ganges to catch up corpses is not scare mongering, watching them burning many corpses is not scaremongering, it is fact. Having said that Brazil is worse than India and no-one is covering that at all

We are NOT India and we are NOT Brazil - look at the differences before writing such rubbish - the Thames isn't being netted - I mean what are you taking?
Well I am the one that recognises that how people are affected in other countries does affect us. Do stop shouting at people who look at covid globally.

TomatoesAreFruit · 14/05/2021 14:21

Boris didn't put India on the red list for ages because he was pursuing a trade deal. He just doesn't learn from his mistakes.

Now we are going to pay the price AGAIN for his indecision and poor decision making.

I think surge vaccinations in areas with a lot of virus seems sensible. BUT vaccinaters need to be clear that it take 2 weeks or so for the vaccinations to take effect.

Surge testing also seems sensible.

MarcelineMissouri · 14/05/2021 14:21

I think boris will be saying Monday going ahead as planned, we’re keeping an eye on Indian variant and doing x,y and z to help.

Initial data on vaccines working looks positive

Leonardsgirl · 14/05/2021 14:21

I've had both vaccines and I'm happy to keep wearing masks indoors and in crowds too, but I would like to get some semblance of normal life back. We need Monday to go ahead as planned.

Aposterhasnoname · 14/05/2021 14:21

The vaccine doesn't prevent people from contracting or spreading, it just (hopefully) prevents people from dying of it.

Jesus wept, why are people still saying this. There’s reams of evidence that the vaccines stop people contracting it, and prevent transmission ffs.

Because he will be in HoC and other meetings until then, doing the legal bits, the political bits, the science bits.

Because that is the regular time he does them - allowing Darling Nicky to get in first!

Because he's running* a country, not a tombola stall!

(Do they exist any more, tombola stalls?)

TheLadyGrayson · 14/05/2021 14:24

This Sky News journalist says no changes to the roadmap: twitter.com/alan_mcguinness/status/1393173746970726401?s=21

@GlomOfNit

I'm watching Independent Sage at the moment and the data does indicate that the Indian variant B1617.2 is more transmissible than the other variants currently in the UK (Brazil and SA variants haven't gone away but they peaked and fell), including the Kent variant that is (was??) the dominant variant here. At the moment they're thinking that the Indian variant isn't necessarily vaccine resistant, it's just more transmissible, but that in itself is worrying if you get large outbreaks in contained areas, as they can provide a 'reservoir' for further mutation.

I don't know why we wouldn't be worried about this. I am also very 'oh FFS' - we have a break booked in the UK for half term and I am really looking forward to going into museums and maybe having the odd coffee inside while the weather is so shite - but what else are we meant to do? BJ should probably put the breaks on further lifting of restrictions for at least a couple of weeks - it wouldn't have a massive impact on our lives and the economy (2 weeks) but might be enough to put into place local measures to try and stamp out this new variant.

We are still doing really well. Why would we want to throw it away by saying 'well fuck it, I'm done'? I just don't get it.

Until we have large outbreaks with many thousands of infected some people just don’t have the foresight to realise the error in opening up at this point. They fail to correlate a highly transmissible variant taking off just as we start easing off restrictions with the fact it will lead to a major outbreak and possible lockdown in literally a few months.

Perhaps at the fifth or sixth wave the penny will drop.

Zzelda · 14/05/2021 14:25

It'll be "We're relaxing things because we're such nice politicians and Johnson is desperate to distract attention from his lies and corruption, but come on now, please be sensible". And the rate of infections will continue to rise.

Lostinacloud · 14/05/2021 14:27

Cases don’t matter anymore! I’m sick of being treated like I am permanently infected with covid and sick of the scaremongering. Viruses mutate every few hours but it’s rare that one changes to such a degree as to avoid the vaccines already administered to the vulnerable. If hospitalisations and deaths don’t go up then maybe we have to look at what’s going wrong. Otherwise, give me and my DC back our lives! Vaccines were the answer we were told, seems to have been more lies as usual. Amazes me that anybody still believes anything that comes out of Boris or Whitty or sage’s mouths.

halcyondays · 14/05/2021 14:27

Tombola stallls still exist, but I’m not sure if I would trust Boris to run one.

looptheloopinahulahoop · 14/05/2021 14:28

@bluelemming

I've just noticed the NHS app now has a link to 'check your COVID-19 vaccine record' on the home page, and a dedicated page, instead of having to search for it via your health record. Good news.
Just checked mine and it works. Great news indeed.
ineedaholidaynow · 14/05/2021 14:29

There are still a lot of people not vaccinated.

millenialblush · 14/05/2021 14:29

If Monday gets cancelled I will be marching with thousands of others tomorrow. If people are scared about the so called Indian Varient they can stay at home indefinitely. This ends when the people say it does, and for me that's now.

SlipperyDippery · 14/05/2021 14:30

What is your proposal then? How long should we stay under these current and totally unsustainable restrictions then?

It was always anticipated opening up would lead to an increase in cases. The issue is whether it leads to an increase in hospitalisations or deaths which place the NHS in jeopardy. We don’t have the data to suggest that yet do we, when we don’t know whether the Indian variant evades the vaccines?

User135644 · 14/05/2021 14:32

You can't march against a virus.
Alonim · 14/05/2021 14:32

I'm on the fence.

I don't want to be locked down forever. That's why I think its crazy to open up if a new variant is starting to spread like wild fire.

ineedaholidaynow · 14/05/2021 14:33

Why do people want to to march? Wasn't it large rallies in India that caused the initial spread of this variant. Not really going to help the situation.

SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 14:37

"You can't match against a virus" isn't that the truth. You can't argue with one either. Or tell them.youve had enough and to f* off. Shame...I think that what the majority of the UK are doing.

justasking111 · 14/05/2021 14:37

You can march of course but the media will not cover it if the government tells them not to, or they will minimise it on page 59 of the paper under kitten gets stuck in a drain pipe.

EasterEggBelly · 14/05/2021 14:38

Monday is the first day I’ll see my customers face to face since December. It’s the first time I’ll go to work since December. It’s the first time some of my customers will have ‘socialised’ since December.
I don’t think a lot of people who are carrying on as normal understand how isolating these restrictions have been for some.

They can’t delay it any longer. It’s time to live alongside this virus.

Leonardsgirl · 14/05/2021 14:40

I'm in London. I've just looked up the figures for my area. In total around 8% of the population in my borough have been diagnosed with Covid. The death rate is around 0.002%. Currently there are a tiny number of cases. More than 60% of adults have had their first vaccine.

If we don't carry on with the roadmap now, when do we start to live some sort of normal life again?
