So, is Monday under threat? Change to school masks or hugs?

It’s been “a few more weeks” since last April.
If the most vulnerable are vaccinated then whyyyy is this still going on.

frumpety · 14/05/2021 21:38

But we cannot continue to lockdown every time a new variant comes out because we'd never stop. This virus will be around, it will mutate, hospitals are not overwhelmed, rates are low, people are getting vaccinated

There is a middle ground though, lockdown areas with a spike of a new variant for a couple of weeks, monitor the situation, re-open. Stop the spread out to other areas. Keep the numbers (rates) low, whilst you continue to roll out the vaccinations. It will be annoying for those in the areas effected but ultimately less annoying than a country wide lockdown for longer.

If you do local lockdown people travel to more open one and spread variant that way

Because they're so vaccinated they need a third dose.

And because 46% of the country is completely unvaccinated.

@Dementedswan

As an anxiety and depression sufferer, long with having several conditions that put me at high risk. I have had two doses of az. This combined with variants now has me worried of blood clots and of vaccine evading variants. I'm pretty much house bound as it is. Only risk to me is dc attending school. Dh works from home, shopping delivered. I'm deaf and get panic attacks when I cant hear around me so pretty much house bound 😩
There is no evidence this or any know variants evade the vaccines. The experts know have data that shows ALL the vaccines should work with all the know variants.

The question they have is does the variant make the vaccines less effective at stopping infection and transmission. Information out of India shows that vaccinated people if they do catch it get no symptoms or only a mild symptoms.

You should be all good now you have had your jabs❤

bethmc93 · 14/05/2021 21:42

Local lockdowns won’t work I don’t think, people will just go to the nearest town with softer restrictions

Only if you let them.

How do you stop them?

PurpleDaisies · 14/05/2021 21:49

@frumpety

Local lockdowns won’t work I don’t think, people will just go to the nearest town with softer restrictions

Why ?

Because they want to sit inside a pub. It happened in previous lockdowns with different tiered areas next to each other. People driving two hours for a pint inside. Not supposed to be they did anyway.
Gilly12345 · 14/05/2021 21:50

Indian variant? I know the borders were shut too slow, however I thought people returning from India were supposed to isolate or stay in hotel quarantine?

Personally I would of shut borders straight away and those people in India should of stayed there for our protection. Not wanting to sound heartless.

TruelyWonder · 14/05/2021 21:50

Experts have said that local lockdown don't work. That last time the were a disaster.

All a local lockdown does is make people that don't follow the rules travel more. Spreading the virus to new places.

We have not got enough army of police to ring fence whole towns and cities. Plus that has the potential to cause dangerous riots etc

PrincessNutNuts · 14/05/2021 21:55

@frumpety

Why ?

Because that's what they did last October and last December.

Love from someone who lived in a Tier 2 area that was Tier 4 adjacent.

After a week we were both Tier 4 areas.

A week after that we were all in lockdown again.

reesewithoutaspoon · 14/05/2021 21:55

Gilly12345 they travelled in via other countries to prevent having to quarantine.

Local lockdowns don't work. In Liverpool following the mass asymptomatic testing our rates were low. we were tier 2 until December and our pubs and restaurants were open.
Local areas (Manchester, Wigan, Warrington, Chester) were in higher tiers. People just travelled into Liverpool town centre for nights out from higher tier areas. I didn't go into town, but colleagues who did said they heard hardly any Liverpool accents, town was heaving with tier tourists

MercyBooth · 14/05/2021 21:57

Why were people 'allowed' to mix over Christmas when numbers were higher

Except we wernt and the gaslighting and rewriting of history over this is another reason i can no longer give a shit.

MakkaPakkasSpongyThing · 14/05/2021 21:58

@MercyBooth Laura Dodsworth - Spiked

Spiked magazine, edited by O’Neill, appears to hate leftwing politics. It inveighs against the welfare state, against regulation, the Occupy movement, anti-capitalists, Jeremy Corbyn, George Soros, #MeToo, “black privilege” and Black Lives Matter. It does so in the name of the “ordinary people”, whom, it claims, are oppressed by the “anti-Trump and anti-Brexit cultural elites”, “feministic elites”, “green elites” and “cosmopolitan politicians”.

TokyoSushi · 14/05/2021 21:58

I think all that we can do is keep calm and see how the next few weeks turn out. There's no point speculating about tiers and lockdowns and doom and gloom just yet. If we all just hold our nerve, keep up with they hygiene measures etc, we might just be OK. 🤞🏻

FluWorldOrder · 14/05/2021 22:01

BuT tHe VaCcInEEE, Jeepers! All this time and people STILL don't understand the vaccine doesn't stop transmission. All the vaccine does is 'reduce symptoms' of a virus you can apparently have and have no symptoms of. Go figure.

Watapalava · 14/05/2021 22:04

Reece

Totally agree!

I was in San Carlo and there was a table of 15 Wigan men all getting pissed on table net to me. 15!!

I'll admit i also travelled from tier 3 but its crazy as i worked in Tier 2 and my kids went to school in tier 2 so the restrictions were rubbish. I was also only tier 2 because of the high numbers in Preston - my town was actually lower than Liverpool at the time

Watapalava · 14/05/2021 22:05

'I was only tier 3' that should say
