So, is Monday under threat? Change to school masks or hugs?

@Gilly12345

Indian variant? I know the borders were shut too slow, however I thought people returning from India were supposed to isolate or stay in hotel quarantine?

Personally I would of shut borders straight away and those people in India should of stayed there for our protection. Not wanting to sound heartless.

Yeah, no.

Our border policy is a farce.

Our Prime Minister didn't travel to India for trade negotiations because India are in the middle of arguably the worst covid crisis in the world so far - with a suspected much more transmissible variant.

But the Indian trade delegation that came here instead weren't asked to quarantine at all - and some of them turned out to have covid.

Carlislemumof4 · 14/05/2021 22:33

It sounds like Monday's reopening should be delayed due to concerns re Indian variant transmissibility (surely cases are being underreported too) but I'm supportive of the government pressing ahead, so many more businesses will go under otherwise.

June 21st surely isn't going to happen though. I'm just desperate for my children to be able to stay in school. We live a quiet life, DH still wfh for the foreseeable but I feel so badly for those losing their jobs. Surely some form of universal basic income, higher than universal credit, has to be considered if restrictions continue. I see Wales are going to conduct a trial of ubi.

So grateful DH and I have recently had first vaccines, second due in July. Many more people to be vaccinated though.

I mean going forward longer term tbh.
Living alongside covid whilst living normal lives, with normal social interactions, travel, schooling (including higher Ed), work places open, mass gatherings taking place, etc.

We can't keep locking down.
Our economy can't deal with that.
Most people can't live with restrictions longer term. It's already been 14 months or more.

So long as the vaccines keep reducing the likelihood of transmission and severity of illness we have to just keep going.

Covid will never be eradicated in all likelihood.

Think that's a way off tbh.
MercyBooth · 14/05/2021 22:40

@MakkaPakkasSpongyThing And? Sonia Poulton used to write in the DM but from what ive seen thats not reflective of her views.

Alonim · 14/05/2021 22:44

I think all that we can do is keep calm and see how the next few weeks turn out. There's no point speculating about tiers and lockdowns and doom and gloom just yet. If we all just hold our nerve, keep up with they hygiene measures etc, we might just be OK.

I agree with this.

Coldwine75 · 14/05/2021 22:50

I dont think we will be ok thanks to the government NOT closing borders (why!!) and letting people back in here from bloody India!

Dementedswan · 14/05/2021 22:53

@Coldwine75 the variant was discovered in India, should the rest of the world be blaming the UK for the widespread of the Kent variant? Ridiculous!

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 14/05/2021 22:53

How do you stop them?

Roadblocks as they’ve had in other countries where there have been restrictions on how far from home you can travel (I’m not advocating for roadblocks)

awesomekillick · 14/05/2021 23:09

I don't much care anymore. Let ignorance have its way.

No but why not close the borders? why the hell are people flying in and out of the uk?
Roboticcarrot · 14/05/2021 23:31

@MercyBooth

Why were people 'allowed' to mix over Christmas when numbers were higher

Except we wernt and the gaslighting and rewriting of history over this is another reason i can no longer give a shit.

Yes they were, aside from in a few areas of the country. If you read my message in context, it was in response to someone up in arms about people mixing for Eid, when most would have done the same at Christmas had there not been a few days of relaxation, when numbers were higher than now. Therefore its ridiculous and unfair to be annoyed at people. How is it rewriting and gaslighting?
loginfail · 14/05/2021 23:32

@Coldwine75

why the hell are people flying in and out of the uk?

In many cases it's trivial things like work, just maybe helping make sure at least some industry and commerce in the UK can keep functioning, perhaps helping ensure food/drink/medicines and heaven knows what continues to arrive in the UK.

I agree. I'm done with the room and gloomed merchants. What will be will be. I'm just taking things as they happen and making the most of the opportunities when I can.

Ive been meeting friends for lunch as often as possible since April 12th and from Monday I'll be meeting indoors wherever I can.

If they do lock us back down (and I hope and pray they don't) I know I've done as much as I can to live a normal life

a8mint · 15/05/2021 00:28

They were advised not to, but the thing is that people would have met up even if the government had said it was not allowed.
IRL i dont know anyone who knows, or cares, what the rules laws are now.

PrincessNutNuts · 15/05/2021 00:50

This fucking "You are allowed to but we advise you to be careful" bullshlt really gets on my tits.

It gives permission on one hand and takes it away with the other.

It's such a mixed message that people like my parents (who were shielding) don't know what to do fit the best.

The mixed message wink to those waiting to be allowed to do things, and warning to those who know they need to be careful is one of the worst parts of this country's bloody covid policy.

Basically their way of abdicating responsibility
PrincessNutNuts · 15/05/2021 01:23

That's exactly what it is @Wheresmybiscuit3.

Putting all the onus on us.

All the constant testing of our children.

All the mask-wearing.

All the social distancing.

All the queueing.

All the red raw hand sanitizer hands.

All the self/isolating with no support.

All the homeschooling.

All the travelling 35 miles for a vaccine.

All the working from home standing up in the kitchen with a laptop perched on a pile of cookbooks shushing the cat with a visiting in law shuffling into shot in a dressing gown and curlers...

It's all on us.

Absolutely it is.

The problem is so many people buy into the gov bullshit. It’s always us doing things wrong leading to more restrictions. Never the government not implementing them appropriately

MercyBooth · 15/05/2021 02:08

Fiction but interesting nonetheless. Shows how it would have to be done if they didnt have the lazy default setting of "just book online"

@MercyBooth awful. My best friend’s daughter tested positive a couple of weeks before her due date, had to miss a vital midwife appt (so a breech diagnosis was undetected). Her symptoms passed, but she continued to test positive as she went into labour - and had to be isolated in a separate room. Her husband was also Covid positive.

Onedropbeat · 15/05/2021 04:49

I gave birth last may and was made to wear a mask

I couldn’t see a thing because I was so hot and my glasses were constantly steamed up and I was in tears with panic for the majortof it as my husband was t allowed to be with me until the very last minute which he nearly missed

My baby’s birthday is next week and it’s bringing up a lot of those feelings

That is fucking awful. I'd be the same. I hate masks.

And to think they could have nipped this in the bud in January 2020.

Or February.

Or even March.

Or August.

Or a month ago.

They have to get covid done so we can stop living like this.

How many more years? How many more births like that?

Why do we put up with it?

Was discussing exactly this here yesterday - really enrages me too!

It is part of Johnson's dithering, he can not make decisions. Leaves us all on the bloody fence with him.
