So, is Monday under threat? Change to school masks or hugs?

I'm weary and wary too , but only because of what happened last year. Hopes were high at Christmas then the Kent variant took hold and it was all cancelled , then the January lockdown.
I know we have the vaccines now etc so it might be ok , but who knows?

SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 17:52

@PrincessNutNuts

"As soon as we see exponential growth" the Prime Minister says.

What would he call this kind of skyward orange line?

Exactly
Roboticcarrot · 14/05/2021 17:52

@the80sweregreat

Haven't we been here before though ? One minute it's all fine, carry on with the road map. In a weeks time or more it could all change again. I really hope not of course but it feels like Christmas all over again. (Don't want to be negative , just going by last year. )
We didn't have as high of a percentage of people vaccinated then. That's an absolutely major difference.
vera99 · 14/05/2021 17:52

They know some serious shit and are trying to sugar a turd.

Delatron · 14/05/2021 17:53

I just thought it was unlike Whitty to make an error. They both seem a bit flat to be fair and that’s understandable. They must be worn out.

TonytheDog · 14/05/2021 17:53

I wish Boris would stop speaking and let some more more articulate and knowledgeable (Whitty) just take the whole press conference. It's like the difference in a 5 year old telling you something and an expert.

the80sweregreat · 14/05/2021 17:53

Yes, I admit I was forgetting about the vaccine but still feel uneasy .. it's my default setting.

Puttingouthefirewithgasoline · 14/05/2021 17:53

I'm not surprised if they are arguing they have different responsibilities.

MakkaPakkasSpongyThing · 14/05/2021 17:54

Major tension between Whitty and Boris! Whitty is seething!

Christinayangtwistedsister · 14/05/2021 17:54

No wonder Chris Witty looks nervous, could you imagine standing next to Boris and wonder what the fuck he was going to come out with?

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2021 17:54

Always appreciate Whitty and his expertise

Nah, by the lead up the Christmas the hospitalisations were starting to rocket, the hospitalisations/deaths are still really low.

Lockdown is to 'protect the NHS', there is no reason why we would need to restrict things again right now, when the hospitalisations are so low and its summer (so the NHS is quieter generally).

I do wonder about June 21st though...

Puttingouthefirewithgasoline · 14/05/2021 17:56

Where is valance, sky said he was due as well

Delatron · 14/05/2021 17:56

They are repeatedly saying that we are in a different situation because of the vaccines. People need to listen. It’s completely different to before.

(Though I’m still cross about the delay to India going on the red list.)

RhubarbTea · 14/05/2021 17:56

Ohh what was that interruption just there?!

DarlingCoffee · 14/05/2021 17:56

They both look spooked

I’m not picking up on that at all
warmup · 14/05/2021 17:56

Basically 'we have no idea what will happen with this variant, we don't have the data, we think it will spread more rapidly but let's just crack on regardless'

Vintagevixen · 14/05/2021 17:57

It's the hospitalisations/deaths that are key as opposed to positive tests and they remain low.

We have a successful vaccination programme and all those in the most vulnerable groups have been offered/given vaccines.

New variants are talked up to stoke the fear. Unlocking is the correct thing to do.

IndigoC · 14/05/2021 17:57

Think they’ve made the right call with vaccines. Focus on full protection for those likely to be hospitalised rather than a first shot for an 18yo in Bolton which will make very little difference given how long it takes for immunity to kick in.

Roboticcarrot · 14/05/2021 17:58

What do you suggest?
EnoughnowIthink · 14/05/2021 17:58

The young unvaccinated thrown to the wolves again looking like our vaccine going further away so the over 50s can get their second jab sooner

So better that they vaccinate the young and this gets out of hand and the over 50s get ill in large numbers and hey ho, it’s January again?

warmup · 14/05/2021 17:58

@Roboticcarrot pause Monday until data is available.

vera99 · 14/05/2021 17:59

Wales has paused Monday's re-opening.

Idontwantarow · 14/05/2021 17:59

I can’t see June happening. Another wedding cancelled 😢😢😢😢
