Talk to me if you've got an autoimmune disease and have had the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine

Can't have AZ, due to a clotting issue, but have also got various auto immune issues, and a strong family history of auto-immunity.

I was all gung-ho for vaccination when I couldn't get Moderna/Pfizer, but now there's stock, I find myself getting cold feet, as I'm concerned the technology means it risks an auto-immune flare.

I'd love to hear from anyone with auto-immune issues who've had either jab to hear experiences of any kind! How have you found it?

I have hashimotos and am developing rheumatoid arthritis. Also have multiple heart problems. I had two pfizer shots and had a sore arm and felt shitty (but normal you got a cold shitty) for two days afterwards and then magically 100% better the third day

I did feel weird tingling in my lips and fingers for about 15 mins after the shot. Then said it was quite common and it didnt progress to anything

I also had quite pronounced titinus for about 3 weeks after each shot. I wasnt sure it was linked as I do get titinus anyway. However I am now 2 months post second shot and I have less titinus than I used to have.... i also saw a paper suggesting some link, but havent had time to read it yet

I have Hashimoto’s, celiac and PCOS. I’m in the US, so had doses one and two of Pfizer at three week intervals. The first dose I just had a sore arm, the second I had chills/sweats/body aches for a day and then felt fine. I have not had a flare-up since, and was fully vaccinated three weeks ago.

MiniMaxi · 14/05/2021 07:14

Thanks @Totallydefeated and @RandomMess that makes sense. I only ask as the clot reaction to AZ might be autoimmune so didn’t know if that was a factor. Hope you’re ok with Pfizer!

(FWIW if anyone’s interested (!) I have Hashimoto’s and have had one dose so far of AZ and was fine other than typical two days of feeling crap)

Schulte · 14/05/2021 07:16

One Hashimoto’s with Moderna and one psoriasis sufferer with Pfizer in our household. We were both completely fine. Go for it!

SleepyMathematician · 14/05/2021 07:29

I have hypothyroidism, coeliac disease, a rare autoimmune condition called IGG4 which causes autoimmune pancreatitis, and am under investigation for MS. Have also had bouts of CFS/ ME over the years.

I had Covid last year which flared almost all of them and left me with quite bad long Covid (still affected a year later).

Had Pfizer, 1st dose start of Feb, 2nd a month or so ago. No issues at all (sore arm and mild side effects aside). In fact, the long Covid improved dramatically every time. I feel like having a booster once a month!

Porridgeislife · 14/05/2021 07:30

My sister has Crohn’s and takes biologics to manage. She had no side effects from Pfizer except for a very sore arm for 24 hours.

mynameiscalypso · 14/05/2021 07:32

At least 4 members of my family/in laws have various autoimmune conditions - including me. We've all had both jabs of Pfizer with no issues for any of us.

MrsRussell · 14/05/2021 07:44

I have lupus (quite mildly - it's monitored but that's about all)
Have been suffering from quite a long flare lately, dry eye leading to all kinds of visual rubbish, arthritic pain, costochondritis, all just a bit meh.
Had the AZ on Monday and felt crap for about 36 hours.

All the flare crap has now settled. I volunteer with Scouts and for the first time in about 3 months I was able to comfortably participate in the physical side (getting up and down to light fires etc) and it's looking like I might be able to put my contact lenses back in in the next day or two.
Asthmatic DH also had AZ and he reported very much the same about 6 weeks previous.

We're planning to go for a long walk tomorrow. At Christmas I couldn't walk from the train station into town, about a 10 minute walk.

This is not a side effect I was warned about but I'm chuffed to bits with it.

MiniMaxi · 14/05/2021 07:47

@MrsRussell not at all the same but I was suffering from dizzy spells for six months that disappeared the day after AZ jab! I do wonder if there was a psychological / stress element which lifted when I’d had the jab but who knows!

MrsRussell · 14/05/2021 07:51

@MiniMaxi I did wonder that!
Perhaps we ought to add it to the Yellow Card feedback thing - side effect, you might clear some of the low level bobbins that you might have been struggling with for a while Grin

icedancerlenny · 14/05/2021 08:29

I have MS and I have had both doses of Pfizer. I had a sore arm and that’s it. No flare up or other side effects.

WyldStallions · 14/05/2021 08:33

Sister has coeliac, psoriasis, and cold induced lung inflammation, plus arthritis in her fingers.

Had her AZ with no issues except brain fog (group 6, so before clotting issues came to light).

JoeMaplin · 15/05/2021 09:15

I have RhA, IBD and Sjorgens. I've had both doses of pzifer and was fine. Very sore arm for about 24 hours and felt a bit wiped out by the second but just tired really, no flare.

crossstitchingnana · 15/05/2021 09:23

I flared with ulcerative colitis a week after my second pfizer jab. Think it's coincidence.

LeonardLikesThisPost · 15/05/2021 20:05

I have Hashi's and had AZ 10 days ago. Very mild side effects: felt a bit spaced out for a couple of hours, muscles ached for 2 days (the way they do if you've done some unaccustomed exercise), arm hurt a bit for about a week. Didn't need any time off work.

I did vaguely wonder if it might help a bit by giving my immune system something to do other than attack my thyroid (disclaimer: am not a doctor. Can you tell? Grin ) One can but hope!

LividJabber · 15/05/2021 20:21

Hashimoto’s here.

36hrs of bleugh after AZ.

Have discovered my thyroid is out of whack again a couple of weeks after vaccine, but no evidence that it’s due to the jab...

HerRoyalNotness · 15/05/2021 20:31

I have RA and sjogrens and had the moderna. Both shots only a sore arm.

Hellcatspangle · 15/05/2021 20:46

DM has rheumatoid arthritis and had Pfizer, no side effects at all with either jab.

JamesAnderson · 15/05/2021 21:20

I have hashimoto's and Addison's disease and have had both doses of Pfizer and apart from a bit of a headache and feeling tired I was fine

RavingAnnie · 15/05/2021 21:24

Ooo that's interesting I have tinnitus and just had Pfizer - would be interested in reading that paper if you can find a link to it?
RavingAnnie · 15/05/2021 21:33

I have a rare form of Graves' disease (and a variety of other conditions - minor inflammatory plus allergies) so I fluctuate from hypo to hyper. Had Pfizer this morning. Arm felt a bit weird and hot immediately afterwards, feels OK now. Have felt a bit tired today and skin has felt a bit hot mildly. Early days but will report back if I get anything else.

Very pleased to have been able to have Pfizer, as everyone I know who's had AZ has been v poorly for varying periods afterwards; some of which have been quite odd, whereas Pfizer seemed (anecdotally anyway) to have fewer/less severe side effects. I feel ill most of the time with my various conditions and my body acts in very strange ways and is quite sensitive to everything, so I felt more confident with Pfizer (and slightly less so Moderna) and wanted to minimise the risk of something going wrong/my Graves' being flared/feeling more unwell than I do anyway etc etc etc. So very pleased and surprised when that was on offer when I turned up this morning :-)

onemouseplace · 15/05/2021 21:42

I have IBD and have had two doses of the Pfizer with no unusual side effects, and no flare of the IBD.

housemdwaswrong · 15/05/2021 21:42

Lupus, 2 doses of az, first fine but sleepy, 2nd blurred vision for the evening but fine. Also have had strokes and have heart issues but no problem with the clot threat (had my two doses before this came to light, so no chance to worry about it).

I know you said moderna/pfizer but it may help someone else. Hope all goes well for you.

omgwhy · 15/05/2021 21:51

I'm hesitating having my jabs at 46 years old, as I believe it the AZ I'm being invited for as I have endometriosis had excision surgery last year, I have chest pains and suspected long covid.

The last thing I can face right now is any set back as I've been in daily paid for the last 2 years based on have an inflammatory condition does anyone else with endometriosis have any feedback as well??

I'm going to maybe just wait another month and see if I can get Pfizer
