Talk to me if you've got an autoimmune disease and have had the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine

Can't have AZ, due to a clotting issue, but have also got various auto immune issues, and a strong family history of auto-immunity.

I was all gung-ho for vaccination when I couldn't get Moderna/Pfizer, but now there's stock, I find myself getting cold feet, as I'm concerned the technology means it risks an auto-immune flare.

I'd love to hear from anyone with auto-immune issues who've had either jab to hear experiences of any kind! How have you found it?

I have 3 autoimmune conditions and have had Pfizer *2. Felt ghastly after the second for 48-72 hours but felt very grateful to be largely covered against covid 19. No flare up. Rheumatologist would advise get vaccinated to the hilt because you don't want to be ill with your condition and get C19 on top.

Utini · 15/05/2021 23:08

I have Hashimoto's and am also developing an autoimmune liver disease. I decided I didn't want AZ as the clot issue appears to be autoimmune, so I'm concerned that people with autoimmune issues might be at higher risk.

I had my first Pfizer recently with no side effects other than tiredness and a sore arm.

Utini · 15/05/2021 23:11

@omgwhy I think more and more clinics are moving to Pfizer and Moderna for first doses, as under 40s are being invited now, and a lot of second doses are AZ.

I phoned my GP and asked if I was able to have Pfizer as I'm not quite 40, but was invited with the 40 year olds as my birthday is before 1st July. They were fine about it, and also happy to book in DP who is a few years older.

User89044 · 15/05/2021 23:14

I have Crohn's and take azathioprine. I had both doses of Pfizer and was fine after both bar a sore arm.

Axlcat · 15/05/2021 23:16

I have MS and had Pfizer. I’ve had both vaccines and no issues at all other than a sore arm and some fatigue after the second.

MissM2912 · 15/05/2021 23:21

Yes and have had both doses of Pfizer. Felt rubbish for 36 hours but then no issues

omgwhy · 15/05/2021 23:50

@Utini thank you, I'm going to phone up and see if I can choose.

Namechange600 · 15/05/2021 23:58

@omgwhy I had AZ and have severe endo (did have it all removed last year but I think it has started to grow back..) - I had a sudden reaction with fever etc but for the next 10 days had what I think was an inflammatory response with I assume any endo tissue inflamed and I had a lot of spotting and sharp endo pain plus fatigue.
I’m still not totally right but also have many other conditions too so always hard to know what’s causing what.
Best of luck xx

omgwhy · 16/05/2021 23:47

@Namechange600 oh that's awful and my fear. Horrid disease, hope it calmed down, the flares are awful x

ODFOx · 16/05/2021 23:52

DM (autoimmune liver disease and lupus) had Pfizer and no side effects with either dose.

Sleepplease1111 · 16/05/2021 23:53

Is hypothyroidism an autoimmune condition? I have it and I’ve never been told it effects my immune system.

Pinkpaisley · 17/05/2021 00:01

I have two auto-immune conditions. One is basically in remission because they removed the organ that was being targeted, the other is active. I had Pfizer. The second shot hit me like a truck. I could not stay awake. My husband would come into the room and wake me up and make me drink some water and I would fall right back to sleep. That lasted 3 days. Then I woke up and I was absolutely fine. I haven’t had any lingering effects. I have absolutely no regrets about being vaccinated.

I was scared going in, both of immediate and longer effects. I had my epi-pens ready and out just in case I reacted poorly, but I didn’t need them.

@Sleepplease1111

Is hypothyroidism an autoimmune condition? I have it and I’ve never been told it effects my immune system.
Yes, caused by the immune system attacking the thyroid gland. Having said that, it’s very common and quite often the only autoimmune disorder that shows. I think where autoimmune disorders runs in families (like crazy in ours) it can often be the first to show itself.

Having it doesn’t mean your immune system isn’t working - in fact, the opposite - it means it has gone a bit too mad and attacked a bit of you along with killing off viruses etc. This is basically what all autoimmune disorders do; mistake the body for an invader.

I was diagnosed in my twenties as hypothyroid and had nothing else for over twenty years. Then four years ago, coeliac (which I suspect had been undiagnosed a while) and recently a host of others. But my sister has had only thyroid for years and shows no sign of any others at all.

Viruses can cause an autoimmune system flare where the body gets “extra attacked” by its own immune system. Most of my more recent autoimmune issues have been triggered by viruses and so I was worried the jab might do the same. But it seems to have been fine. Worth remembering catching actual Covid is more likely to do this than the vaccine.

Sleepplease1111 · 17/05/2021 06:54

Thanks @SleepyMathematician that makes, I’ve also had it for over 20 years, and it runs in my family, I also have family members with POTS and crohns who have all had their vaccines and been ok.

Abraxan · 17/05/2021 07:59

I have psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (both auto immune diseases) plus medication which suppresses my immune system.

I have had both Pfizer doses.

After the first I had a sore arm, more under my arm pit at the gland than the jab site for a handful of days and a bit of a headache the day after.
Second jab last week - slightly bruised feeling arm for a day or two.

mollie8 · 17/05/2021 08:03

I have nephrotic syndrome treated with immunosuppressive medication. I've had both Pfizer vaccinations with no issues.

Alwaysablockednose · 17/05/2021 08:04

My partner has rheumatoid arthritis and has had his 2 Pfizer. Slight raised temp after the second and tender arm but no flare up. He takes methotrexate weekly.

springblossom2 · 17/05/2021 08:06

I have rheumatoid arthritis - on methotrexate. I had the Astra Zeneca - both doses - and had no side effects at all.

purplehulahoop · 17/05/2021 08:12

I have auto immune as does close family
I've had both Pfizer doses
Tired and headache after first shot, nothing after the 2nd. Immune condition unaffected

MiniMaxi · 18/05/2021 08:50

@MrsRussell thinking back to our comments the other day re low level bobbins that disappeared after the jab, did you see the article today that says the vaccine can improve symptoms of people with long Covid?!

Trisolaris · 18/05/2021 08:53

Have T1 diabetes and have had 2x Pfizer!

MiniMaxi · 18/05/2021 08:55

(Before I get flamed because I know what people on mumsnet can be like, I do not in any way think that long Covid is “low level bobbins”)
