The vaccine booking website is now directing to Moderna / Pfizer sites

For eligible age groups. At least, it looks like that's what happening.

I had my first Pfizer as a walk in with spare doses (pregnant), and have tried to book on the website just now for my second jab - it's only showing vaccination sites that are 30+ miles away, which I assume are the nearest hubs with Pfizer stock. The times are also highly limited (you can only book a week or so in advance), which probably accounts for the unpredictability of stock.

Does it actually mention which vaccine is available? I managed to get booked last night (38) and it didn't say, I'm worried I'm at a site that only has AZ, but there doesn't seem to be any way of knowing for sure, so hoping the system was intuitive enough to know. I just wondered if it might have changed overnight.

littlepeas · 13/05/2021 07:05

I also booked last night. The first time I went in I was offered loads of options, including a big local site that I know has AZ - I then pressed back and went in again and my options were significantly reduced. All but one option were 20+ miles away (some much further). They were further reduced for my second appointment, so I'm assuming it was filtered for the first appointment to p or m and then filtered again down to whichever one I chose.

Fingers crossed it has all worked! I am going tomorrow morning, so will report back!

DixonD · 13/05/2021 07:07

It looks like it, I thought this might happen which is why I waited until this morning to book (I’m under 40).

FlatStanletta · 13/05/2021 07:09

I booked last night too (almost 38) and was offered lots of small pharmacies which seemed odd... I have booked at larger vaccination centre / hospital in the hope that they definitely have Pfizer / Moderna!

It will be interesting to hear if those who booked at pharmacies are offered anything other than AZ

littlepeas · 13/05/2021 07:13

I think it was a bit glitchy last night - the first time I went in I was offered small pharmacies and a big site that I know has AZ. I thought this was a bit suspicious, so I went out and back in again and was offered a reduced list, with some sites very far away. As I'd seen the two lists, I was confident enough to book last night - but I would definitely recommend going in and out a couple of times to be sure before booking!

Pharmacies cant administer pzifer due to the temperature it needs to be stored at. They will only be supplied with astrazenica.
Good call booking the large hospital hub!

LittleBipper · 13/05/2021 07:16

I just booked, I went with a local big centre that was AZ when my husband went a few weeks ago so presume it still is. The only one I was offered that I believe not to be AZ is Sheffield Arena but otherwise I haven't been able to find out. I did notice there were lots of pharmacies.

I will have AZ as opposed to nothing but I'd rather have one of the others if I can!

I'm not sure that's the case anymore. I had Pfizer at a village hall clinic set up by a pharmacy. A poster on another thread explained that Pfizer can now be defrosted and stored at a lower temperature for a certain length of time.
Hellocatshome · 13/05/2021 07:30

If you are under 40 the system won't let you book an appointment at an AZ site so you don't need to try andnsecond guess the system just book the most convenient one for you that it shows is available.

vaxmeup · 13/05/2021 07:30

While I suppose it is our fault for booking early (myself included but was just so excited to finally book) when they said it would be from 7am today, it's a little frustrating if thousands of people ended up booking AZ who will need to cancel and rebook. Will be interesting to see if those who booked last night get offered AZ anywhere...

I think that many places will shift to offer the other vaccines. Just looked up the place I am going and it said

“Expected to offer AZ for all first doses until w/c 17th May when this will change”

Not sure about smaller centres but fingers crossed as pp said they can now do Pfizer

@Ilikewinter - pharmacies previously only got AZ but we are increasingly giving them Pfizer now.

And to everyone - from today, the National booking system knows which site has which vaccine, so it will only offer you sites with Pfizer or Moderna if you are under 40 or pregnant. 👍

LittleBipper · 13/05/2021 07:44

That's great FlatStanletta I thought it was a bit weird that we'd been offered a choice but you have to do stuff like go back and forwards in the booking!

Gubanc · 13/05/2021 07:45

Supplies for AZ are pretty low due to India withholding the stocks. This could as well be the reason.

This is wrong. Totally wrong.

Pharmacies are and will be getting Pfizer.

starfish4 · 13/05/2021 08:43

Our local pharmacy has administered the Pfizer vaccine. Unfortunately for 5-6 weeks the booking site offers a vaccination site out of county 40 mins drive away. Not great, but we'll have to get DD there one way or the other when it's her turn.

Wigeon · 13/05/2021 08:56

@LemonTT, well, to be fair to @Ilikewinter, it was the case until quite recently that pharmacies weren’t getting any Pfizer! But some of them are now.

This isn't the case any more. I had mine at a local pharmacy and all they were offering was Pfizer.

not true any longer - I have helped out at a vaccinating pharmacy. Pfizer arrived in small quantities early that day by courier, presumably having been taken out of a super cold fridge somewhere. They had to prioritise using it up, after which they moved onto AZ.
Frazzled2207 · 13/05/2021 10:33

off topic a bit but I do wonder who's going to be offered first dose AZ now unless it's over 40s booking late.

And presumably this will mean lots of spare AZ doses - hope they do something useful with them like send them to India.

IndigoC · 13/05/2021 10:37

Are over 40s blocked from seeing non-AZ sites I wonder?

Totallyaddictedtoshoes · 13/05/2021 10:38

I booked yesterday (I'm 38) and all local pharmacies came up, no info on what vaccines they were doing so I was a bit concerned, called them this morning and was told they have both but you are allocated one by the nhs and I'm getting Pfizer. So it looks like there is some proper arrangements in place to administer an alternative.

usernotfound0000 · 13/05/2021 10:47

@Totallyaddictedtoshoes that's very reassuring, thank you. I'm booked in to a pharmacy site this afternoon and was concerned. Fingers crossed the same happened for me.

You're welcome. Give your centre a call if you can, hopefully they can put your mind at rest.

I tried to find a number but didn't have any luck. Pharmacy2U site at a local hotel.
