That holiday destination list....

ShamedBySiri · 07/05/2021 23:03

As I haven't got spare cash for an overpriced holiday abroad I have been able to laugh at the list. Though I would love a trip to Portugal or Iceland, both places I have had great trips to in the past. But the rest of the list??? I've seriously wondered if the government are just trolling us now!

South Georgia anyone? I'm not sure if there is even any permanent habitation there? Obviously if you are the next David Attenborough and want to study the penguins I'm delighted that you should be able to pursue your career. And I love penguins. But it's not exactly a practical holiday destination for most of us.
It would probably take the best part of a week to get there for starters (and another week to return obv).

Where do you fancy going to on the list?
(Australia and New Zealand are out as they aren't letting us in).

I find the list unintentionally very funny Grin loads are British Overseas territories (explains high vaccine rates)and there's places I've never even heard off!

Geography has never been my strong point, but I couldn't point to Brunei on a map and the only thing I know is that is has/had a sultan GrinGrin

I've just laughed my head off at the frontpage of the Star today, sums it up for me!

Florelei · 08/05/2021 07:37

Yes I don’t believe that many people are going to properly quarantine from yellow list countries. It’ll just be a case of ‘I want my holiday but I’m not prepared to take the responsibility of trying to keep others safe afterwards’. Just standard me me me behaviour.

When travel was allowed last year half of the people I know didn’t quarantine a single day.

Given that we aren’t even allowed inside bars and restaurants yet I think it’s too soon to be allowing this kind of travel. It’s just asking for the importation of variants because people just won’t do the quarantine.

Brunei isn't at all where I thought it might be. But then I was probably getting it mixed up with Bahrain, Benin or Belize, which are all scattered across the world.

I laughed too ILookAtTheFloor

I think Brunei is a small corner of the larger Indonesian island. Given its size I'm not quite sure how the sultan managed to accrue his huge wealth. Still it might be an interesting place to visit and it will certainly be warm. You could probably sneak over the border and explore the wider island. Don't go if your gay though. Or at least don't go as a couple or have any PDA's. I've a feeling they hang gays there or something. Confused

@Florelei just to inform you that the situation is very different to last year. You need to do a lot and spend a lot of money on tests in quarantine, if you want to come back from an amber country. You also get phone calls.

Also your comment it's too soon.. indoor dining isn't permitted until 17th of May and neighed is international travel.

Did people really think at this point it would be a case of “off you go have fun” it has to look at what is going to keep the levels we have finally reached in place. I get that people are desperate to travel but it’s got to be done cautiously

user19097527484949 · 08/05/2021 07:42

@dementedma

I'm currently in France, not on holiday, but for sad personal reasons. My PCR test in Scotland before leaving cost £80, my 2 PCR tests booked for day2 and day8 quarantine cost 150. My PCR test in France....free. Some serious profiteering going on in UK
Oh definitely. In Germany tests are so much cheaper ! I hope they sort it out in the UK like they say they will. It's big business!
Florelei · 08/05/2021 07:44

Let’s hope so @user19097527484949 - I want a holiday very badly but I just worry about people’s behaviour given what I witnessed last year.

I also want a nice night out in my favourite restaurant! 😂 I’ll be so annoyed if we start importing variants that mean another lockdown or closure of indoor hospitality due to failures to quarantine properly.

user19097527484949 · 08/05/2021 07:48

@Florelei me too ! I'm in that business, so I can't feed my family if this continues. The variants are already here though ! It seems impossible to keep them out, unless we have mandatory hotel quarantine from all destinations.

Florelei · 08/05/2021 07:53

@user19097527484949 - I hope things go well. You are right the variants are already here. I’m sure somebody with much more knowledge than me has assessed the risk.

I suppose we’ve also got vaccines this year which should help. Also, people were allowed abroad last summer and cases stayed low until we started heading towards the colder weather.

Hopefully, I’m just worrying about nothing! I just can’t bear the thought of another lockdown.

ShamedBySiri · 08/05/2021 07:54

Oh it's ok. Don't panic. They won't enforce the death penalty (by stoning) in Brunei. Might get ten years in prison though. And lesbians get 40 lashes of the cane.

www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-48171165.amp

Derail alert? Would being stoned be the worst death? You might get knocked unconscious quite quickly and miss the rest? I think I'd choose stoning over beheading. I often think about what it would have been like to be Anne Boleyn or one of the other Royal ladies similarly treated and have to be dignified and present oneself gracefully for the big chop. Horrible.

It should be compulsory quarantine in a hotel that you have to pay for so no being allowed home until that’s completed otherwise like you say it won’t be complied with by many.
ElleDubloo · 08/05/2021 08:07

It’s going to be way too complicated and expensive to go abroad this year. I’m just going to sit this one out.

6Helen7 · 08/05/2021 08:24

It was obvious when they didn't announce the list before the elections that there weren't going to be many popular destinations on the list.

I think other places like Greece etc will be added later.

ihearttc · 08/05/2021 08:25

It’s made me incredibly angry. I’ve already had Covid as has my DH and 16 year old DS. In a few weeks time both me and DH will have had both vaccines. DH needs to travel for work to a country whose whole handling of Covid has been far better than ours and where most people have already been vaccinated yet he still can’t go.
Yes I know legally you can travel for work but it then involves a 10 day isolation which isn’t doable.
I’m just so so fed up with it all now. He travelled easier last summer without already having covid and the vaccine than he can now.
It just feels like the Government are playing with us.

MozzchopsThirty · 08/05/2021 08:38

Can we travel to Ireland??? (Southern) with no quarantine

I know NI is fine

99victoria · 08/05/2021 09:17

@Florelei
I'm sorry you know so many people who chose to flout the quarantine rules. My OH and I were abroad last March when the first lockdown happened and we put ourselves into voluntary quarantine when we came back to the UK as there was no guidance at all at the time. One of my friends was back and forth to Europe several times during the second lockdown as they were moving there and they always completed their quarantine.
We are planning to go to Greece next month and despite both having had our vaccinations we will be complying with the test and quarantine requirements on our return

AnyFucker · 08/05/2021 09:24

I fancy a sandwich now

ILookAtTheFloor · 08/05/2021 09:38

@MozzchopsThirty I'm pretty sure there's no quarantine for the Republic due to the Common Travel Area thing. I imagine you could get to the Republic via NI anyway.

Not sure about the rules in Ireland for British travellers though.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 08/05/2021 10:00

It just feels like the Government are playing with us

I’m sure many would rather they were being cautious than allowing free for all travelling. We are doing well case number wise and with hospitals but need that to remain the case. Forgoing a holiday in order to keep that status so a no brainier. Hardly an essential anyway.

It may have some benefits for the future as many business trips could actually just be done by video rather than the need for air travel.

LaCerbiatta · 08/05/2021 10:06

This list means nothing for a holiday in July/ August. Portugal is doing really well because they've just come out of a lockdown, but with only a small number of people vaccinated it's quite likely that in a couple of months numbers will be high again.... This list is for now, not a guarantee for the summer

MaggieMagpie357 · 08/05/2021 10:17

But it isn't a "holiday list"!!!!
It's a list of destinations that you are able to travel to without quarantining on your return.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 08/05/2021 10:19

It's a joke. I just hope they add me in 3 weeks. I feel for those working in the travel industry.
