If you had side effects with the first dose, how did your second go? I’m a bit nervous!

I had the AstraZeneca vaccine (no regrets!), but had the typical flu, unwell, had to go to bed for 24 hours, side effects after. Then I had a headache that lasted a long time after - so long that I even rang the doctor about it. And I have been more tired than usual ever since. (About a month.)

Anyone have these kind of side effects with the first? If so, how was the second dose? Should I expect more of the same?

I reacted really badly to my first dose - had to spend a day and a half in bed with flu type symptoms and cold shivers.

Had my second a couple of weeks ago and was absolutely fine.

Springersrock · 24/04/2021 09:09

Not me personally, but my SiL had a horrible time with her first dose of AZ - she had a COVID test in the end as the side effects were pretty severe.

Had her second dose a couple of weeks ago and nothing. Not even a sore arm

MrsPnut · 24/04/2021 09:13

I had my second dose just over a week ago and I’ve only had a slightly sore arm at the injection site. I had a really painful arm after the first jab and was a bit off the day afterwards.

Lucidas · 24/04/2021 09:14

The pattern seems to be lots of symptoms for the AZ first dose, very few for the second.

And the opposite for mRNA vaccines.

These replies are making me feel SO much better. I have been absolutely dreading it!

(I also took a Covid test because my side effects weren’t shifting! I didn’t have it.)

I felt a bit feverish and achey for about 36 hours 12 hours after the first jab. I felt pretty much fine after the second.

sorryboss · 24/04/2021 10:17

Glad you posted this I'm having exactly the same worries today, got mine today, I was really ill after my first one, like you say no regrets but I wanted to prepare myself

ifonly4 · 24/04/2021 10:28

First dose, after six hours I had chills for a couple of hours and felt sick. Mild headache and tiredness for a week.

Second dose, again after six hours I had chills but only for an hour. Nothing else whatsoever.

Katyy · 24/04/2021 10:32

Me too. I was like you, spent a day in bed had every side effect going, and am still getting frequent headaches Have my second dose next Friday and dreading it 😱

Bookshelfer8 · 24/04/2021 12:10

Good luck, katyy! I really hope you get no more side effects!

I felt awful after the first dose. Really really dreadful.
Had my second on Thursday. No reaction at all. Yay!

ragged · 24/04/2021 12:17

Adult DC (teen) was in bed for a day after 1st dose (AZ). They had nothing after 2nd dose. Someone else (mid 20s) I know was the reverse -- nothing 1st time & ill for days after 2nd one. I suspect few people get a double whammy of ill both times, and of course some people are fine both times.

bluechameleon · 24/04/2021 15:57

I was pretty ill the first time, feverish, dizzy, nauseous, headache. The second time I was not as bad - still bad enough to need a day off work because I was pretty dizzy and fuzzy headed, but much better than the first time. Both only lasted about 12-15 hours.

GloomyWaters · 24/04/2021 16:01

I was going to post the exact same thing!!!!
Was poorly for 3-4 days with first vaccine...spent one day in bed sleeping.

Am dreading the 2nd

Realitea · 24/04/2021 16:04

My Mum felt weird for her first dose, flu symptoms that lasted 24 hours. Second dose, just felt a bit tired for a day then back to normal

ivfbabymomma1 · 24/04/2021 16:05

My parents had their second Az last week with minimal side effects. For context they are 65!

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 24/04/2021 16:07

I had to take to my bed for a day after the first jab and had a really painful arm. I was slightly tired (as in needed a good night's sleep) after the second.

alloutofcareunits · 24/04/2021 16:09

I felt dreadful after the first, shivery, fever, aching etc. Thought I'd got away with it second time as I started feeling unwell after about 6 hours after the first, however, 9 hours after the second I felt just as bad and was also nauseous. If we need boosters every year I won't be bothering, everyone where I work has had their jabs and 2 people just tested positive in the last week and have been quite unwell

GlmPmum · 24/04/2021 16:26

I was rough with first dose and second one I was fine, just a little knackered day after.

Yellowhighheels · 24/04/2021 16:45

I felt crap for a couple of days after the first, absolutely fine after the second

LateMumma · 24/04/2021 18:49

I had my second on Weds. Fluey and nauseous after first one for a couple of days, then tired for a few more. Just tired after this one, although woke up with a brutal headache this morning.

OobieDoo · 25/04/2021 09:22

I felt awful after my first - fatigue, aches all over, chills, fever, throbbing arm for about a week. I had my second dose yesterday morning and I got a bit of a headache that went away with paracetamol and I felt super tired again, but overall nowhere near as bad as the first dose... until about 11pm. Then I started feeling sick, threw up about half an hour later, then spent the night alternating between chills and sweating. 😬 I feel a bit better this morning but I'm taking it easy.

kazza446 · 25/04/2021 09:34

I had my 2nd pfeizer a week ago. The nurse carrying out the vaccine said people receiving the az tended to fare worse on the first, but were ok on the second! People having the pfeizer tended to be more affected after the second!

sorryboss · 25/04/2021 11:46

Had my second one 24 hours ago. No side effects at all!

Bookshelfer8 · 01/05/2021 18:35

I’m just bumping this again as my next vaccine is due soon and I have been worried a bit again today. Would really love to hear any more experiences!
