Pills to treat Covid at home

I think this a game changer, the UK seems to be thinking ahead for variants in the future, this would also help poor countries such as India

I think Boris is fantasising. Sorry.

Whichjab · 21/04/2021 13:11

I can't believe that he announced this, its a hope not a plan.

Seriouslymole · 21/04/2021 13:12

If it is a plan, why on earth wasn’t it started 12 months ago?

cripez · 21/04/2021 13:12

I want to hear what epidemiologists have to say about it, not bloody BJ

Siepie · 21/04/2021 13:18

It’s only a game changer if it actually happens.

Boris is just saying he wants scientists to find/invent something. We all want scientists to invent plenty of things. That doesn’t mean they will within the next few months.

I hope it does happen, but Boris saying he wants it isn’t any kind of guarantee.

Stoptalkingtome · 21/04/2021 13:19

Just another of Boris' fantasies. Makes me suspect there will be another lockdown and this will be used as a carrot for the angry ones. The man cannot help but spout bollocks that is lapped up by the gullible.

Stoptalkingtome · 21/04/2021 13:20

(I'm not anti lockdown, I'm just used to the dickhead making promises he can't keep).

rosie39forever · 21/04/2021 14:38

🤣🤣 moonshot anyone ? And I hope to be a 6 foot supermodel by the autumn too , why does he think we'll fall for this again?

bookworm1632 · 21/04/2021 14:44

I can't believe anyone is still taken in by this tbh.

The list of promises he has no intention of fulfilling, or is in no position to fulfill just keeps growing, along with the numerous white elephant, vanity projects.

Scrapping petrol/diesel cars by 2030
Cutting CO2 emissions by 78% by 2035
Frictionless border with NI

Azuretwist · 21/04/2021 22:44

Well everyone could have an inhaler at home that can be prescribed now after a positive test. That is a start. Though getting one means coping with Gp telephone triage and not at weekends!

RoseWineTime · 21/04/2021 23:23

I don’t like Boris but hasn’t Operation Moonshot actually happened with the Lateral Flow Device Tests?
I hope the pill idea might be a goer too - maybe what the awful orange president was given when he had covid?

penni00 · 21/04/2021 23:29

I think it very irresponsible of Boris to talk about this right now in the middle of the vaccination program when it is nothing but a hope. It may well lead to some declining vaccination and hanging on and relying instead on this 'hope'. For goodness sake what is he like?

I think at the moment it's only over 50s and clinically vulnerable but, yes, this is right. The NHS approved it last week. An inhaled steroid for home treatment.

Trials have been going on over the past year, testing a number of repurposed and newly developed drugs as possible treatments.

He should make it clear any treatments need to be used as well as, not instead of, vaccines. It will be particularly for those whose immune systems aren't as strong and so not as protected by a vaccine, and also people medically unable to be vaccinated. It will still be best to have a vaccine. Prevention is better than cure and all that. I really hope Boris clarifies any confusion.

@Schulte

Were you one of those people who kept saying 'I don't think we'll ever get a vaccine. Sorry'? Of course it's not a fantasy. Research is in progress and has been for some time.
Cookerhood · 22/04/2021 09:05

Does he think that the scientists haven't been trying to do that for the last year? It's a bit of an insult tbh.

FlattestWhite · 22/04/2021 09:12

It's a fantasy that he is announcing it like it is some new idea - that he'll create a task force, and they will just invent new treatments to order, by the autumn, in pill form if you please , just because he's asked for it.

Of course people have thought of the ideas before, of course they'll be working on this continually for the past year, of course they'll be trying to do it as soon as possible and in the most effective/convenient way. They didn't need Boris' permission or ideas. Money, now yes, that might be helpful, the more money and resources that can be invested in treatments, great, things might get done faster, as with the vaccines.

But it's the way it was all announced as if it was a definite plan for the autumn that was some new idea of his that is the fantasy. They'll get invented as soon as possible, they'll get them trialled and distributed as soon as possible, because that's what scientists do, not because Boris has ordered them.

Great to have new treatments that can be used at home, nobody is arguing that! And chances are there will be some, too. But not specifically because he's decided that there should be.

Azuretwist · 22/04/2021 22:50

Oh I did not know it was limited by age and if CV, that is useful to know @Tealightsandd - either way, it is encouraging that the inhaler, plus steroids are treatments already that are available. Hopefully more may come to keep people put of hospital and able to avoid complications.

SpnBaby1967 · 23/04/2021 11:34

I imagine he's hoping it'll be something like the Tamiflu tablet for swine flu. So it has precedent.

Tamiflu has been widely discredited - basically it has never been shown to work, while at the same time manifested numerous problematic side effects.

It's happened like the garden bridge "happened". i.e. Lots of money has been spent on it, despite scientists stating it won't work.

LF tests are RED light tests - i.e. if you test +ve you MUST isolate.

Boris's moonshot project relies on them being GREEN light tests, i.e. if you test NEGATIVE you can do xyz....

I think he is still hoping they will help to open up society, but their failure rate at detecting +ve cases is simply too high. Even in people with high viral loads they are still missing 1/3 of cases.

MarshaBradyo · 23/04/2021 11:50

Yes to a huge amount of posters talking down vaccines for ages. Good re research.

LastChanceToChange · 23/04/2021 12:02

What's with the party political/partisan one sided bollocks?

The man had just announced heavy investment in an anti-viral project and has plans for treating covid at home by the Autumn. I think he knows a lot more than he is saying at the moment and is getting regular updates from UK researchers with regards to potential treatments.

But all he gets on here is negativity. I don't understand the mindset of posters on this thread. Do you want him to announce no investment/no treatments ffs?
