I think this a game changer, the UK seems to be thinking ahead for variants in the future, this would also help poor countries such as India

I’m no scientist but this struck me as.... unlikely. Googling has made me conclude that what Johnson was ACTUALLY saying was that he hopes that the scientists come up with something like this soon, not that it exists or is likely to exist anytime soon.

I’m expecting in the next press conference for him to get up and say he’s looking forward to the upcoming invention of a teleportation device that will not only take him from mistress to mistress instantly and seamlessly, but will also put his pants back on for him at the same time so that Carrie doesn’t find out what he’s been up to. Seems about as likely as these fantasy antivirals.

Why do you need pills if the vaccine works?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 23/04/2021 12:26

OK!

The Task Force is the most recent, others brought us AZ, Lateral Flow Tests etc. This is the UK Pandemic Plan in action. Lots of research, lots of 'moonshots', take what sticks and consider the bits that don't work to be money and time well spent in the furtherance of medical science.

The tablets are not expected to be replacement vaccines - that's more lazy journalism - they are treatments for people with covid, aimed at those who can't have a vaccine for whatever reason, or who don't get full coverage from a vaccine.

The initial research has been going on for months - we heard about anti virals in January, they weren't brand new, in relation to covid, at that time. This is a promise of money and facilities because something has been shown to have potential.

Yiou can choose to see this as a waste of money, keep referencing past mistakes etc, or you can look at the successes and hope this becomes another one.

Your choice!

I will keep referencing past mistakes, thanks, given how many people have needlessly died thanks to his incompetence and laziness.

Some people might forget all that once they have their vaccine in their arm, but I don't plan to.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 23/04/2021 14:33

Good grief. There's not much you can say to that!

oldegg123 · 23/04/2021 22:01

@Nerdygirl

Why do you need pills if the vaccine works?
Primarily to deal with those who won't or can't be vaccinated, and those who don't form a robust enough immune response (e.g., the immunosuppressed, elderly)

Secondly to pre-empt the potential issues caused by new strains if any emerge which are no longer recognised by immune system

But I think you knew this Grin

Honestly some of you don’t have a clue about the research that has been going on in the background and also the different treatments developed in some hospitals that is now reaching patients in other hospitals as well .

I know a 40 year old that has been extremely ill , but the hospital has been amazing with all the different treatments they have given him . I m sure if it had been in the first wave he would have died to be honest .

So I think Boris has a good idea of things that are happening in the background .

The reason we are using LFTs is that we have bought a load of them (Dominic Cummings contracted with Innova)

You can do that for yourself. Just by using a thing called Google!

Key words: Anti Viral Task Force Covid Efficacy

tobee · 25/04/2021 03:49

Pfizer are currently doing human trials on these pills I believe.

tobee · 25/04/2021 03:51

From the Telegraph yesterday:-

Not sure Pfizer think it's just a fantasy

Marguerite2000 · 25/04/2021 08:01

Sounds very promising.

tiredoftiers · 25/04/2021 08:11

Sounds like there’s a few drugs in the process of trials
