Moderna or AZ

If you could pick would you go for moderna? My local hubs seem to have one of these depending on where you book so I could most probably choose which one to have.

I’d go with whichever location and time was the most convenient to me. I don’t believe that either is significantly ‘better’ or ‘safer’ than the other in real individual terms.

bookworm1632 · 14/04/2021 17:07

I'd pick Moderna - nothing to do with the clotting risk as firstly it's very low and secondly I suspect that Moderna is not risk free. Nothing to do with the efficacy as I suspect BOTH have similar efficacy against the strains currently dominant in the UK.

But when (if) normal life re-opens I'm likely to have an enormous number of contacts and I believe that Moderna suppresses transmission more than the AZ jab does. Also should the SA strain become entrenched here, it will mean I won't need a booster, so one less faff to worry about until of course a worse strain comes along.....

I wanted Pfizer over AZ back in February and got it. My parents wanted moderna and got it. I am happy with Pfizer but would choose moderna over AZ.

Schulte · 14/04/2021 17:14

@chickenbreast was that by chance or did you and your parents somehow manage to request the specific jabs?

Etulosba · 14/04/2021 17:32

Northampton Moulton Park is doing Moderna today.

Spied · 14/04/2021 17:36

I'd have chosen Moderna.
I've had both AZ

TroubleUsedToBeMyBusiness · 14/04/2021 17:39

Moderna
I'm supposed to be getting vaccinated next week and will probably refuse if AZ. Don't mind if I have to wait for a jab

Doireallyneedaname · 14/04/2021 17:59

Moderna

ThatOtherPoster · 14/04/2021 19:08

Is there anyway to find out the names of the 21 U.K. locations that are offering Moderna? The news mentions two - one in Reading, one in Sheffield. Can we find out the others?

chickenbreast · 14/04/2021 19:41

@Schulte They had Moderna on that day in the vaccination centre.

SunshiningBetty · 14/04/2021 20:21

I was worried about having the AZ one when I waa jabbed in February. The reason being that, from someone who work in research and reads a lot of papers, theirs seemed an absolute shambles. I was absolutely slated when I asked in here about which centres were doing Pfizer. Turns out I was right to be concerned. As it was, when I phoned the GP to book in they booked me in at the surgery which would have been the AZ. I told them that I was really worried about having the AZ and could I be booked into a Pfizer clinic instead. Everyone on here had told me that it was impossible to request Pfizer and that I should just be grateful for the AZ Hmm Anyway, I asked and they were fine about booking me in for the Pfizer. My husband and sister did the same.

So it certainly never hurts to ask as some GP receptionists are happy to do this.

It's not helpful to make general comments like these as they may worry some unnecessarily. It would be better if you could explain properly what specific concerns you had so that people could assess for themselves...or if you are not sure, don't say anything

Tickly · 14/04/2021 22:12

How do you find out which hubs are doing Moderna....?

My specific concerns were mistakes used in dosage which led to the half dose/full dose palaver and that some groups in the research were very limited (age/ethnicity/conditions etc)

I’d choose anything other than AstraZeneca just due to the side effects

Comefromaway · 15/04/2021 21:37

I was terrified about side effects, (still am) and everyone I know seemed to be ill for a couple of days after AZ. So I have to admit to feeling a bit relieved when I turned up today and was told it would be Moderna.

Dd aged 19 had AZ and was feverish but she’ll still go for her 2nd dose.

Lovingtheglitter · 15/04/2021 21:41

I wanted the moderna one but would also happily have accepted the astra zenica one. I had my jab yesterday and it was moderna. I had muscle aches and a headache yesterday and just have a sore arm now

Tallybo · 15/04/2021 21:47

@DandelionSprout

Pretty much everyone would pick Moderna. People are only having AZ because there’s no choice.
Really?

Other vaccines have side effects. My mother was smug after receiving her first Pfizer jab ( her admission). No side effects. She wasn't quite so smug after her second jab.

raaaasss · 16/04/2021 19:25

I had moderna on weds and had all the side effects people describe for AZ. Just starting to feel better now, Fri evening. So don't choose based on that. I was pleased to get moderna as it has higher efficacy + better protection against variants.

MirandaWest · 16/04/2021 19:31

DH and I have both had Moderna (his yesterday and mine today). So far I have a sore arm, DH had a sore arm yesterday, a bit tired yesterday evening but better today.

We’re in York.

RoseWineTime · 16/04/2021 20:26

AZ appears to provide a better T cell response so is more likely to prevent against hospitalisation and death than the mRNA vaccines.

Silverparting · 17/04/2021 09:09

I was mostly worried about long Covid. I had the AZ and have read it's very efficient wrt Long Covid.

TraffordDad75 · 17/04/2021 11:22

So do we think the centres with Moderna are only offering Moderna or are they offering AZ as well. And I thought the Moderna was being held for under 30s, so how are people in the 45-49 list getting it to we know?

The centre I went to had two entrances, one for Moderna & one for AZ. I think the people receiving Astra Zeneca were 2nd doses. Most of the people in the Moderna queue appeared to be of a similar age to me 45-50 and had booked this week although I heard one person say he was a carer.
