Aura migraine & Astra Zeneca?

HamCob · 06/04/2021 19:49

I've experienced aura migraine for the past 9 years. It usually affects my vision and sometimes my speech/numbness & tingling etc. Only usually get them every few months now.

I just wondered if any of you with aura migraine had second thoughts about having the AZ jab? Aura migraine increases stroke risk slightly hence not being able to take the pill etc and I find the reports of the possible link to the jab and cerebral blood clots in younger people concerning.

For what it's worth I had my jab a week ago so it's kind of irrelevant now but I hadn't really thought about until I had a migraine today.

I had my first AZ vaccine two weeks ago. Very few immediate side effects but 9 days later, on Easter Monday, I had two separate aura migraines in a day.
Felt tired and headachey all week after and then another aura migraine today. I rarely have aura migraines usually. Rang 111 to query if I should be concerned but they didn't think it was linked to vaccine due to it being over a week later. I am quite suspicious that the vaccine may have triggered them though.

I am similar to you, I have now had 3 of these in a week since having my vaccine on 1st April. I have completed the yellow card but happy to report my symptoms are resolving now. Very disconcerting when you lose your vision like this isnt it.
Sausagefingers · 11/04/2021 07:39

@Jenasaurus Sorry to hear you have experienced the same thing, it really is disconcerting, especially the vision loss. It is reassuring to hear that other people seem to have had similar reactions though. I will also report using the yellow card system in case there is a link to the vaccination.

I get chronic migraine with aura. After I had my Jab I woke up in the early hours with a banging migraine. I don't think it's unusual, but it's probably not a problem.

polkadotpixie · 11/04/2021 08:47

I suffer from migraines with aura and have had 2 in the last 5 days since my second jab, however I had the Pfizer and this isn't unusual for me as I go through clusters of them

I'd happily have had the AZ and tbh, I'd be happy to to take the combined contraceptive pill too, although I'm not allowed. I feel the risk from both is low

Stickytreacle · 11/04/2021 09:02

Ive had my first dose, I felt fluey and had a mild headache and dizziness for about four days afterwards, but it was nothing like a migraine.

MoonlightFlitwick · 11/04/2021 09:11

I have chronic aura migraine and asked my dr if that meant I shouldn't get the AZ and she thought I should still get it

schnubbins · 11/04/2021 09:16

I have had Migrane with Aura since puberty now lessened in menopause.I have had three attacks of Status Migranosis in my life .One in each of my two pregnancies and one now looking back after starting the pill.I am living in Germany so a long way off from getting any vaccine but glad I found this thread.

Chillychangchoo · 11/04/2021 10:32

I get aura migraine and I’ve been okay after my jab, had it 3 weeks ago.

Had my usual menstrual migraine this month so not related to the jab.

Trinacham · 11/04/2021 10:35

@Hollywhiskey

I have had aura migraine since my teens. I never knew about any link with blood clots or stroke, no one mentioned that with prescribing contraceptives. I think it's fine.
really? My doctor wouldn't prescribe the pill for me because of my history of migraines. I told her I had them, like you, only throughout my teens when I was going through puberty. She said that is enough for me not to have it. I was given the mini pill instead.

This is what I've been worried about with the AZ. Going to read through this thread now!

Chillychangchoo · 11/04/2021 20:38

Yes any contraception with oestrogen is a firm no with aids migraine. My GP/nurse would never prescribe. I’ve always had progestogen only methods.

Chillychangchoo · 11/04/2021 20:39

Aids migraine? I meant aura 🤣

TheFairyCaravan · 11/04/2021 20:44

I get migraines with and without an aura. I take preventatives and have Botox. I had the AZ around 3 weeks ago. I woke up in the early hours the following morning with a migraine but it wasn’t a really severe one. Other than that I was fine.

Hollywhiskey · 11/04/2021 21:28

@Chillychangchoo @Trinacham that's shocking, I wouldn't use progesterone only so that might rule out hormonal contraceptives!

tallbirduk · 11/04/2021 22:51

@Hollywhiskey it’s absolutely true and I am also amazed it’s never been mentioned if you are on the pill and you’ve told them that you have migraines. I remember when I was first asked if I suffered with migraines at a pill check - 20 years ago or so - I’d been on the pill a few years and never been asked. When i said “yes” and the doctor looked surprised and said she couldn’t prescribe the combined pill any more I was gutted Shock

Anyway. I have migraines with aura - randomly occurring, might happen twice a month some months, might be once a year, but I get flashing eyes, numb down my left hand side, and - a new once since my first pregnancy - dysphasia, which is v v scary.

I had the AZ vaccination 3 weeks ago (I’m 46 & asthmatic, mildly but on preventers - not sure exactly why I got called but I wasn’t saying no!) and I had no side effects, not even a sore arm!!

Bustup · 11/04/2021 23:17

I have chronic migraines and get roughly 26 days of migraine a month. I honestly don't think I'd notice if a vaccine gave me migraine side effects.

tallbirduk · 11/04/2021 23:42

Woah @bustup, that’s hideous Shock

SmallTownSouthernGirl · 12/04/2021 09:02

I get sporadic retinal migraines (expanding blob then zig-zag light effects that expand to the edges of vision). No pain, luckily. I'm not accepting any of the vaccines. Migraine gets mentioned a few times (use Find in Page) on the side-effects reporting (as well as other visual disturbances, including blindness, which I am not prepared to risk) -

Absolutely. I have multiple types of migraine including gastric, with aura and hemiplegic and when a doctor put me on the pill I had terrible stroke like symptoms. They pulled me straight off it and the other doctor I saw said I should never have been on it.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 13/04/2021 15:27

They never mentioned it with me when I went on the pill 30 years ago, which is one reason I am very untrusting of hormonal contraception and have advised dd to be suspicious if it ever gets pushed at her.

oldegg123 · 13/04/2021 15:59

A follow up to my PP on how migraine with aura is not a contraindication for the AZ vaccine

The National Migraine Centre have just released their statement after receiving lots of queries - MWA is not risk factor for CVST and people are advised to go ahead with vaccination.

HollyHobbits · 20/04/2021 01:19

@bustup you should get checked for a vitamin D deficiency. I've had Aura migraines for 30 years (since I was 13) but only a few a year. A few years ago, I had 8 in two weeks so had bloodwork done. It turned out I was vitamin D deficient. I went on supplements and the migraines went away.

honkytonkwoman25 · 28/04/2021 19:13

I suffer from migraines with aura, and had my first AZ vaccine on Sunday. I had a pretty bad headache after about 11 hours, but nothing more sinister than that. But, since my neck and shoulders are incredibly stiff, and I have a strong intermittent pain in my head.

When I spoke to the nurse doing my vaccine, we spoke about migraines and she said to look out for pain that you'd never experienced before. I've definitely experienced this pain before, but it doesn't feel like a normal migraine. I don't know if it's all because I'm being paranoid, or if I should get it checked out. I'm worrying about it.

notathumb · 28/04/2021 20:11

Hopefully its just a variation on a migraine @honkytonkwoman25 but I really think you should be checked out. call 111 tonight to see what they say. GP tomorrow maybe. Even if you get the all clear it is better not to have been worrying.

Definitely don't leave it until fri eve or the weekend when the NHS is even more limited. Been there and it makes a difficult situation worse.

Hope you feel better soon

Mangomoonlight · 28/04/2021 20:21

@SmallTownSouthernGirl I’ve never known anyone to describe my ‘migraine’ like that, that’s exactly what I get too. Very sporadic, seemingly no trigger.

I’ve been worried about the vaccine as I’ve also been told that the aura and retinal migraines can increase risk of strokes anyway.
