Aura migraine & Astra Zeneca?

HamCob · 06/04/2021 19:49

I've experienced aura migraine for the past 9 years. It usually affects my vision and sometimes my speech/numbness & tingling etc. Only usually get them every few months now.

I just wondered if any of you with aura migraine had second thoughts about having the AZ jab? Aura migraine increases stroke risk slightly hence not being able to take the pill etc and I find the reports of the possible link to the jab and cerebral blood clots in younger people concerning.

For what it's worth I had my jab a week ago so it's kind of irrelevant now but I hadn't really thought about until I had a migraine today.

I'm worried about this. Have all types of migraines.

Also was put on the pill years ago by a doctor, despite having migraines, so excuse me if I don't trust a jab that has an associated risk of blood clots.

I'm a woman, 40s, migraine sufferer. Don't know why we can't have the Pfizer. I don't feel happy getting AZ, so isn't it better I get one rather than none?

I know the risk is low. I just want the choice.

HundredMilesAnHour · 28/04/2021 20:33

I've suffered with aura migraines (a.k.a. classical migraine) for 35 years now. Didn't stop me getting both my AZ jabs and there's been no impact on my migraines.

Florelei · 28/04/2021 21:34

I’ve had both my AZ jabs and have migraine with aura.

I haven’t died yet. I’m a week post second jab so I suppose there’s still time yet. I don’t think it’s likely though.

Florelei · 28/04/2021 22:36

If you’re worried perhaps discuss this with your gp?

I can’t say that this is something which has concerned me at all.

oldegg123 · 29/04/2021 00:28
@SmallTownSouthernGirl I’ve never known anyone to describe my ‘migraine’ like that, that’s exactly what I get too. Very sporadic, seemingly no trigger.

I’ve been worried about the vaccine as I’ve also been told that the aura and retinal migraines can increase risk of strokes anyway.
They do (which means they are a potential risk factor for COVID-induced blood clots), but they don't increase the risk of CVST specifically, which is what the AZ vaccine is linked to :)

oldegg123 · 29/04/2021 00:29

Guidance form the National Migraine Centre remains the same - MWA is not risk factor for CVST and people are advised to go ahead with vaccination.

@honkytonkwoman25 hope you feel better soon and I'm sure it's nothing, but probably best to err on the side of caution and give your GP/111 a call- sounds like the symptoms aren't like your usual migraine?

I get flare ups a couple of times a week so will be fun trying to convince myself that my normal migraine state is definitely just migraine after I've been vaccinated Grin

Crustybreadandbutter · 29/04/2021 07:46

After Pfizer I got a migraine, then a migraine with aura 4 days later.
Mine always hormone or sleep related and neither triggers occurring at the time, so I’m blaming the jab.
Second Pfizer - no headache - temp for 24 hrs though.

In retrospect I’d definitely do it again, above totally manageable.

PurplePumpkinDream · 29/04/2021 07:59

@oldegg123 Thanks your post is very reassuring.

Hi everyone, just wanted to update as I posted earlier on this thread.

I had a spell of migraines with aura which started just over a week after my first AZ jab. This wasn't completely new to me as have had them sporadically in the past but not usually so frequently.

I haven't had one in over 2 weeks now and feel fine. I don't know if the migraines were linked to the jab or coincidental but they were manageable. I will be definitely be having my second jab when offered it.

I hope this reassures anyone in a similar position.

Zoomy23 · 08/05/2021 16:40

I've had migraine with aura almost my entire life.
The day after receiving AZ I had a horrible migraine that lasted around 3 days. It then went away for a few days then came back even worse. For the past 3 weeks ive been experiencing migraine aura daily, not always leading to the headache, but a lot of visual disturbance!

MiaRoma · 15/05/2021 08:55

How are you now, Zoomy?

Sausagefingers · 20/06/2021 18:36

Just another update from me. Had second AZ jab a week ago today and felt ok afterwards. Been feeling a bit weird all this weekend and just had a migraine with aura (first one since the spell after the first jab). Hoping this is a one off and doesn't turn into a run like before but seems like a big coincidence to have one after my second jab. Still happy to have been fully vaccinated though.

elsue · 24/10/2021 11:16

I had my second AZ jab on 1 May 2021. During May, June and July I had severe migraine attacks, with the prism effect, vomiting (quite violent), unconsciousness, numbness, loss of speech, and brain fog. To sum up it was like I was extremely drunk and uncoordinated. One of the attacks resulted in me spending 4 days in hospital, I had an MRI scan and various other tests, including heart which came back as normal. I have suffered with these migraines for many years (in some instances it was thought that I had a stroke) however since the 2nd jab I had 16 attacks and I was at one point scared to go out. Once they had ruled out the stroke I saw a neurologist who confirmed that it was migraine with aura and prescribed tablets to take to avoid the migraine attacks. I asked whether it could have been a side effect from the jabs but was told it was unlikely. I am now taking amitriptyline each night to avoid the attacks but since then I have had a couple of milder attacks. I am 70 so probably quite a bit older than some who have commented here. Up until this year, my attacks have been infrequent since I am past the menopause. I did complete a yellow card for the vaccine, just in case other cases had been reported that were similar. I am now very reluctant to take the booster jab in case it triggers the attacks again. I don't want to go through that again and I certainly don't want to put my husband through it again. Any extra information from anyone else who has suffered in a similar way would be helpful.

passionfruitpizza · 24/10/2021 11:20

I have aura migraine and had both doses of AZ a while a go. I hadn't really thought about it. No migraines as a result of jab.

SENDworker · 27/10/2021 19:15

I had the Astra Zeneca jab and having not had any headaches ever in 50 years, beyond the 2 nurofen once a year at flu time, I have become completely crippled with migraines with aura. I can’t bear any noise, I can’t see, I can’t feel the left side of my face, let alone trying to think straight. The GP has given me huge doses of sumatriptan and amatriptoline in an attempt to reduce the frequency of these dreadful, attacks. I decided to contact some migraine charities/ societies etc. hoping that I could get some useful tips, what I certainly did not expect was the response. They all told me that they had all received lots of new enquiries post Astra Zeneca injection or existing sufferers reporting worsening symptoms. However as yet I can’t find a single word on any reputable website that notes new crippling migraines as a side effect

elsue · 28/10/2021 09:33

Thanks for this message, sorry to hear about your problems. At least it has helped me to make a decision about my booster shot. I won't be having it. The doctors are very dismissive of any problems which may indicate problems with the vaccine. I expect they have all been told to play down any side effects in case it causes reluctance to take up the vaccine. I did complete a yellow card on line and suggest if you haven't already done that, that you should. I am not sure what happens to all the reports on the yellow card. Unfortunately if anyone says they suffer from severe migraines a lot of people think it is just a headache but we know it's far worse than that. I have been taking Amitriptyline 30 mg per evening for a few months which has helped. I have also been prescribed Sumatriptan 50 mg to take when I have a migraine attack. I was in hospital in May after several attacks, I have a telephone consultation with the Neurologist in mid December. I have details of the Migraine trust, what other Migraine charities have you contacted please? I think that these debilitating side effects for migraine suffers should be more widely publicised. I hope that you will soon see an improvement. Take care. Sue

Treblebass · 28/10/2021 13:03

I’ve had two AZ jabs and I have to be honest my migraines with aura have absolutely increased. At one point I thought I was going to have to take prevention medication. I usually only get one or two a year.

I never did link it could be connected to the AZ jab though Hmm

maddy68 · 28/10/2021 13:10

I had it with az. They gave me my second jab with Pfizer and I was fine
