AIBU - Summer Holidays

I know I can expect sensible and erudite comments here, as opposed to my local paper forum...

AIBU to think that this year, we are just going to go without our annual summer holidays? Cases - including of newer and more unknown variants - are up all across Europe. I love travelling as much as the next person and have family that would love to get away. But given the advantages we have gained here in recent months due to so many of us getting vaccinated and dealing with the lockdown, are we opening the floodgates to stepping back to another lockdown? I have friends that are almost psychotic at any mention of their 2 weeks in Spain, Turkey, Germany potentially being blocked this year. AIBU?

Said nobody ever about Aibu 😂

Seriously though I think you are right, I can't see any foreign holidays going ahead. Ours has already been cancelledSad

CateTown · 05/04/2021 19:57

Yanbu. The travel industry might disagree with us though.

Abraxan · 05/04/2021 19:59

We have decided to book a summer holiday within England this year.

We did go abroad last summer when it was allowed and it felt fine. I'd go this year if I was confident there wasn't a quarantine requirement. I'll be fully vaccinated, as will dh. So risk is minimal to us and from us.

We have a holiday to the US booked for October which we hope to be able to go on. We shall see. We will definitely go if allowed.

I'm less convinced of whether we will be able to go to Scotland in May half term - was a rearranged trip from last year,

SpringtimeSummertime · 05/04/2021 19:59

Has anyone actually booked their yearly holiday abroad? Tui are taking bookings I believe. Not from me.

sjfjsnfkdhsbd · 05/04/2021 20:01

They start having hallucinations when it's mentioned?

user1493413286 · 05/04/2021 20:02

It’s all I keep reading about in the news and I would have loved to have gone on holiday abroad but it’s not the end of the world and I don’t understand why we can’t just accept that it won’t happen this year.

ameliajanes · 05/04/2021 20:03

I doubt we'll have a choice as we will all be vaccinated except for my teenager who is CV but the GP surgery won't book his vaccine yet.

ShakespearesSisters · 05/04/2021 20:04

I'd booked my first abroad holiday in 10 years for last october, it got cancelled 5 days before. I think we will stick with the UK. My kids are young enough still that they are happy camping and playing on a beach. I shall dream of my longed for all inclusive, guaranteed sun, kids club provided holiday for a few more years.

Sparklingbrook · 05/04/2021 20:05

sensible and erudite comments

You do know you have posted an AIBU in the Coronavirus topic on MN don't you? Grin

I don't think I'll be packing a suitcase and getting on a plane for a good while yet.

Figgygal · 05/04/2021 20:07

People need to think more realistically
Even if people can travel it’s likely there will be testing or quarantine in a lot of locations
Cost will be prohibitive because of both let alone the cost of the holidays itself
£3k for a week in Spain - no thanks

Sparklingbrook · 05/04/2021 20:08

Air travel will be an even bigger PITA than before all this for a long time to come.

I do feel for people for whom international travel is essential for work.

gallbladderpain · 05/04/2021 20:09

Seeing the uproar by many people about businesses being closed ...ohhh the economy...then it grates on me when these very same people can't wait to spend summer abroad with many having multiple holidays booked. Not so worried about the economy and local businesses now despite their yapping on about it for months otherwise they would holiday in their own country and boost their own economy!

everyonecanjustfeckoff · 05/04/2021 20:09

See what happened to the highly successful vaccination programme (more than ours even) in Chile and border control.

This year foreign holidays are even more selfish than last year.

Iamclearlyamug · 05/04/2021 20:10

I’ve got 2 sets of flights booked in July and if the plane is in the sky I’ll be on it. I’ll have had both vaccines and both me and DD9 will likely need negative PCR tests but I can live with that. I want to get away somewhere that there isn’t an 80% chance it’ll piss down with rain the entire time, holidaying in the UK would feel like a punishment to me and I’d rather stay at work

TristantheTyrannosaurus · 05/04/2021 20:10

You do you, others will do themselves. 'We' can apply to your own family, others will decide for themselves.

The selfish act is wearing thin. People aren't listening anymore.
Theimpossiblegirl · 05/04/2021 20:12

We have a holiday to Cuba booked for the end of July. It's carried over from last year. Sometimes I think it won't happen, but then it may be more likely than France or Spain. So much can change in a short time. We're going to prepare to go, but not get too excited.

gallbladderpain · 05/04/2021 20:13

People aren't listening anymore because their really is a ridiculous amount of self centered and selfish individuals who seem to live in this country.

Yep! Sure is, they've given up a year of their lives, been vaccinated, enough is enough. And they're unbothered by others labelling them, either.
AnyFucker · 05/04/2021 20:15

I do not expect to go abroad this year until at least September. Even then, possibly not as even if it is allowed there will be so many PITA restrictions/testing/risk of having to quarantine etc it will render the prospect impossible to me.

1.4 million people work (in the UK) in the foreign travel industry - it's easy to dismiss their employment as "just a holiday" when it doesn't affect your families income, isn't it? Easy to throw them under the bus as "selfish" so you can still go to work, go to the pub, go shopping, do what you want to do.

Foreign travel - the last refuge of the doom monger

gallbladderpain · 05/04/2021 20:18

@TristantheTyrannosaurus seriously do you think they are the only people in the world given up a year of their lives. Everyone has, there has been a fucking pandemic. It just seems that for every 1 person who understands that, theres another 10 who feel like the whole world is just out to ruin their life and only theirs!

Cookerhood · 05/04/2021 20:18

I agree OP. We have a holiday booked for September, carried over from last september. I would love to go.but actually think we probably shouldn't be allowed. I'll be disappointed because I don't really want to go away here if everything is crowded & it's raining!

TristantheTyrannosaurus · 05/04/2021 20:19

No, they don't. But don't care to do so anymore. And are not bothered by other peoples' shaming them for that.

gallbladderpain · 05/04/2021 20:22

@TristantheTyrannosaurus Fair enough. I'd rather be a community minded citizen and not act like the whole world revolves around me.
