AIBU - Summer Holidays

I know I can expect sensible and erudite comments here, as opposed to my local paper forum...

AIBU to think that this year, we are just going to go without our annual summer holidays? Cases - including of newer and more unknown variants - are up all across Europe. I love travelling as much as the next person and have family that would love to get away. But given the advantages we have gained here in recent months due to so many of us getting vaccinated and dealing with the lockdown, are we opening the floodgates to stepping back to another lockdown? I have friends that are almost psychotic at any mention of their 2 weeks in Spain, Turkey, Germany potentially being blocked this year. AIBU?

If 10 people are complaining for every 1 that wants to be socially minded citizen, maybe its time to do what the 10 want and not pander to the 1

I’m more fascinated by how many people can afford to go abroad every year, it blows my mind! I don’t see why some people are so cross about missing a holiday or two, it’s a privilege not an entitlement and there’s bigger issues to focus on right now.
Me too! So many people who have got 2/3/4 different holidays lined up...in one year.

I usually go abroad on holiday a few times per year. As soon as it's possible this year, I shall do so! I am hopeful that travel abroad for holidays will be possible in the coming months.

HairyFloppins · 06/04/2021 11:10

Yes will be going as soon as we can. Meant to be going to a wedding in Vegas in August.

I didn't last year as I thought I was being a good citizen. Was deeply jealous when my neighbours came back from multiple abroad holidays glowing with a tan looking as happy as Larry.

@SpringtimeSummertime it’s crazy isn’t it, they must all by extremely fortunate! I can’t even afford a UK holiday but luckily we live in the south west so we have a great choice of places to visit for a day out.

“Sensible and erudite answers”? On the COVID board on MN? Know any other good jokes? This place has been “doomer central” since March 2020. This place is home of “milk is not an essential item!”, bleached shopping, people scared of joggers breathing on them as they pass, “welding people into their homes is a good idea” and other such gems.

Of course people will be wanting to go on holiday. There’s nothing “psychotic” about wanting to live a regular, free life. We are not granny killers. We are free, intelligent people who are capable of making our own risk assessments. If you don’t want to go on holiday, don’t go. But don’t assume everyone who doesn’t live with your level of fear is mentally disturbed.

👏👏👏

Yes, I think the media talking endlessly about foreign holidays is a distraction. The NHS is on it's knees, massive nursing vacancies, too many children reliant on foodbanks. But let's all get het up about foreign holidays.

Yes, lots of people are employed in this industry, but people who would've gone abroad want to go on holiday in the UK now so there's the opportunity for plenty of new jobs there - as far as I can tell everything's booked up for summer here now. Lots of opportunities to make money for those who can be creative.

I live in hope that governments of countries worldwide will be responsible and put restrictions on travel that will prevent spread of variants that could undo all the good work of the vaccines. I think unrestricted foreign travel this year would be the ultimate cutting off your nose to spite your face and end up with much longer restrictions and the pandemic dragging on much longer than it otherwise would.

Everyone talks about previous pandemics ending within a couple of years - the differences to now work both ways. Yes, we've developed vaccines in a year but also we now have the ability to spread new variants worldwide within a few days.

Honestly, it's been cheaper than a UK holiday. We usually go camping somewhere in Europe. Campsite, petrol euro tunnel... is the cost of 2 weeks abroad v 1 week in the UK. Then you get the better weather and often better facilities.
Obviously this is all gone now thanks to Brexit.

This. UK holidays are stunning expensive. And no, not everyone can or wants to fucking camp. Why would you when for the same price you can get a gite or lodge with better weather?

Uh, we have okay jobs and in our case no children. If we'd had children we'd have stayed in our old better paying jobs. It's not rocket science (and we do appreciate the position we're in).

Also we are able to travel in term time but It's still considerably more to stay in the UK even then. Especially when it seems to be that tourists in the UK are so unwelcome (you know who you are).
