Summer holidays abroad?

TheRedBalloon · 20/03/2021 11:08

I've just been reading that various Sage members have said international travel is unlikely this Summer.
We booked our holiday for the end of July to the Canaries (booked it last Summer.) Just wondering has anyone else booked for abroad and still expects to go, or is it more likely to be cancelled? DH and I have both had our first jabs and will have had both in May/June. We booked through TUI so I know we'll get a refund but the thought of going away has kept me going through lockdown!

(I know this is trivial compared with the illnesses / deaths due to the pandemic)

@TheRedBalloon

Will the govt announce it on 12 April? I'd just rather know for sure-we haven't had a holiday abroad since 2019 😭
Same here. If it's not happening I want clarity on it.
VaVaGloom · 20/03/2021 23:57

@toodleloooo totally agree, we have a chance of getting life back on track here, let’s not mess that up

MajesticWhine · 21/03/2021 00:26

I booked something for august in a weak moment. The final payment is due in June so I guess we will see what the situation is then.

As long as those of us who never go abroad arent expected to give up our main event which is Christmas.

I dont think it will go down well with those who cant afford to go abroad if they do all this and then counter it with another Christmas lockdown. 1986 was the last time i was abroad.

That’s life though. Just because some can’t afford it doesn’t mean others shouldn’t have a holiday. Maybe you purchase things I don’t...
MercyBooth · 21/03/2021 01:20

Just because something is "allowed" doesn't make it compulsory.
Lockdown relaxation at Christmas caused the spikes in January

Please dont gaslight. I KNOW the 19th December press conference wasnt my imagination.

And the lorry drivers who were stuck in Kent might take umbrage too.

LoopyLockdown · 21/03/2021 01:25

I want it to happen. My job depends on it.

People are all different. I like going abroad. I don't give a stuff about Christmas.
MercyBooth · 21/03/2021 01:32

@May17th Im not into holidaying abroad. It doesnt bother me that others go. Go for it Its not the holidays that bother me Its the trade off Boris and Chums may do already did last year that worries me. Ive never been into nightclubbing or drinking either But i would object to having to lockdown again because of it. I dont trust the Government not to expect the less well off to lock down and give up what little they do have to minimise any damage that may be done.

ilovesooty · 21/03/2021 01:35

And as for it being about income, if posts here are true there are people who spend more on Christmas than I spend on holiday.

MercyBooth · 21/03/2021 01:36

@ilovesooty Going by your posting history i know you would damn well expect me to lockdown over Xmas if something went wrong due to holidays abroad. All in it together eh.

ilovesooty · 21/03/2021 01:37

So what in my posting history are you referring to?

MercyBooth · 21/03/2021 01:37

Christmas is about our family spending time together. Its the only time my brother gets proper time off work

ilovesooty · 21/03/2021 01:39

Yes, and I hope you get a proper Christmas together this year.

So what about my posting history then?

ilovesooty · 21/03/2021 01:43

On this thread I said that if travel isn't going to be permitted I'd like clarity on that.

So what is it about my posting history then?

MercyBooth · 21/03/2021 01:45

Ah Must have mixed you with someone else I apologise My other comments still stand though. Johnson and Chums will work it so those lower down the scale pay the price.

MercyBooth · 21/03/2021 01:46

I do agree that people need it clarified and not to be pissed about
Like we were over Christmas.

ilovesooty · 21/03/2021 01:48

Apology accepted. I'm in broad agreement with you by the sound of it. The pissing about with Christmas was unforgivable. It doesn't matter to me but it mattered to many others.

MercyBooth · 21/03/2021 01:52

Well i hope he doesnt piss about with the holidays. Johnson needs to clarify things soon because ppl can ill afford to lose money at this time. And i DO understand about having family abroad. I have relatives in Southern Italy.

ilovesooty · 21/03/2021 02:18

Yes, I've had money tied up for two years in flights I have to keep postponing and I can't afford to lose it. I rescheduled one and had to pay an admin fee because it went without me despite the country being moved into the red zone. I miss my friends abroad badly. I'm sorry you can't see your relatives too.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/03/2021 02:21

Plus many people spend more on UK based holidays than it costs to go abroad, especially when you take into account the high cost of eating out, attractions, parking etc in the UK.
MercyBooth · 21/03/2021 02:33

DB sometimes goes on holiday in the UK Ive heard him complain about the prices.

So i need to give up my going abroad so you can have your Xmas ? Your needs don’t trump mine and I think the Xmas celebrations from last year lead us to such big numbers back in January.
Lostinacloud · 21/03/2021 07:50

This news is utter bollocks! I’m in France and this wave is due to the uk variant, currently around 72% of all positive cases nationwide. I believe the same variant is also causing most other European country flare ups.
Since the vaccines appear to work against the uk variant and this variant has already been around the uk and caused a wave, could anyone in this power hungry government explain to me what exactly is the problem with uk citizens travelling to Europe at least? Especially as the roadmap says it’s still 2 months until international travel is potentially allowed. With the arrival of spring and natural progress of a covid wave, chances are Europe’s third wave will be over by May before the uk’s travel restrictions are even lifted.

So utterly pissed off with the doom mongering scientists whispering in the government’s ear and on a personal level, acutely sick of the suggestion that my DC won’t get to see their grandparents for yet another year Angry

Your post sounded a bit mean spirited since you mentioned money. I don’t see how that’s got to do with anything. There’s so much riding on a spike isn’t there schools, restaurants, shops and so on. It all seems so endless Sad I would quite like a holiday!
