EU threatening to cut off supply of vaccines to UK

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 17/03/2021 13:24

Because they've not got enough apparently (despite the fact that they've got a shit load of AZ stockpiled because they've mostly stopped using it)

This is really starting to piss me off now, and has someone who is due 2nd Pfizer jab in 8 weeks in starting to worry I won't get it!

They're threatening to stop supply to USA too.

Wankers

@Aloethere those other vaccines need components made in the UK. Export bans will just stop those arriving in EU. So no more vaccines. It's all so stupid. EU has loads of AZ in stock already that it's not using and it hasn't even authorised the Dutch company they are saying can't give UK vaccines. So they'd rather they went to waste than be given to UK. That is despicable.

Motorina · 22/03/2021 17:36

If it’s viewed in the EU as “literally just another vaccine” then why isn’t it being injected anything like as fast as Pfizer?

(Tabloids the world over are ridiculous. It’s not a uk thing. It’s a tabloid thing.)

(Literally just in the queue now for my second dose.)

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/03/2021 17:38

Ooh! Lucky you. Hope it all goes well 🙂

Baileysforchristmas · 22/03/2021 17:39

The EU aren’t just talking about banning exports of AZ, there talking about all vaccines mainly coming to the UK from the sound of it. I do wonder where they are holding Australia’s 250k batch.

You must be @'ing the wrong person. My EU country is using AZ jabs as are lots of others so I'm not even sure what point you making sorry.

Aloethere · 22/03/2021 17:42

Sorry my dog jumped up on me and I got distracted. What I meant to say was You must be @'ing the wrong person I didn't mention export bans.

LimitIsUp · 22/03/2021 17:44

Which country do you live in Aloethere?

LOMBARDY’S PROBLEMS: Due to technical issues, the vaccine rollout in the Italian region of Lombardy has been beset by problems. Delays getting vaccines and booking errors even led to an almost empty vaccination center at the weekend, despite it being one of the worst-hit regions in the country.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/03/2021 17:47

That sounds dire, soul destroying for all involved!

NewYearNewTwatName · 22/03/2021 17:49

Aloethere

nope but that's what the thread is about, because that's exactly what the EU have threatened, and guess what its not made up by the uk tabloids, you can read/listen/watch it from European news outlets too.

it is a very hostile threat, all whilst some countries in the EU are sitting on very large stock piles. That they could redistribute to countries like yours were government and its citizens actually want it.

3asAbird · 22/03/2021 17:53

The BBC latest talks about a compromise doesn't say what that compromise is.
If its 5million split that won't help eu that much.
They are demanding vaccines from UK site.
Thursday could be very interesting.

The bit that made me laugh.

Is its a mystery where the 250k vaccines Italy confiscated off Australia went?
How do you lose 250k vaccines i assume they still in warehouse in Italy.

3asAbird · 22/03/2021 18:05

Express and times reporting we prepared to share stockpiled vaccines from the Dutch site.
But according to contract they are ours.
So we are effectively giving them vaccines because they kicked off.

Had no idea we made components of moderna too.

@nonono1

Well it looks like Boris is going to offer the EU a couple of million AZ doses to keep the peace, which I do think is a good idea, I just hope they get used.

What? Why?! We’re about to experience a period of jabs shortages and we’re giving away the vaccine we do have? It looks like the EU’s bullying tactics have worked then. What is Boris thinking? I’m so disappointed by this.

He can promise it now, he doesn't have to deliver it too quickly, not while they still have unused doses in fridges.

Guardian and politico say Dutch will block..

www.politico.eu/article/dutch-ready-to-block-astrazeneca-if-uk-deal-fails/[/quote]
I think this might be the key
"If such an [EU-UK] agreement on sharing the delay proves impossible and the Commission were to decide to block an export request, the Dutch government can be expected to follow the Commission in its verdict," said a Dutch diplomat.

If they reach an agreement like other posters have said that some of the British vaccines go to the Eu ... then they won’t block any exports. Shall we lose 5m and get the rest or lose none and get the rest blocked ? Blackmailing I know but is it worth it ?

StormzyinaTCup · 22/03/2021 18:32

I'd like to think that Boris would say to EU let us know when you start running low on AZ and we'll let you have some of ours but you are not having it now if you are going to add it to your existing pile.

I actually think BJ has played it ok (and diplomatically), I suspect that the EU would not have been expecting that compromise quite so soon. They have now been offered some extra so can stop throwing their toys around now. Of course it remains to be seen if that will be enough to satisfy them, I would think not so we just wait for EU vaccine drama part 3 which will in all likelihood involve AZ again (it seems to be their modus operandi).

To quote the well known phrase on MN of late 'when they go low you go high' we don't want to give them any ammunition and get involved in a tit for tat game. UVdL will continue digging her hole no doubt.

Baileysforchristmas · 22/03/2021 18:32

We will have to see what happens Thursday, it could be great PR for the UK if it is seen as the UK coming and helping the EU out in it’s hour of need, even though the EU have behaved so appallingly.

Baileysforchristmas · 22/03/2021 19:10

Well this explains it a lot better.

www.theguardian.com/society/2021/mar/22/potential-for-eu-uk-vaccine-collaboration-despite-astrazeneca-row

Chimeraforce · 22/03/2021 19:14

That's OK. If Boris has any balls, he can consider restrictions on the export of the raw ingredients needed to assemble the vaccine.
EU failed to plan and are now smearing the UK and pharma to stop their people rioting at their shite governance.

Umbivalent · 22/03/2021 19:16

The plant, run by the subcontractor Halix, has not exported any jabs to the EU as yet as the facility is yet to be given approval by the European Medicines Agency

Unbelievable!! The EMA haven't even approved a Dutch plant yet that we already received vaccines from, two months ago!!

Well, actually, not unbelievable at all...

Umbivalent · 22/03/2021 19:19

Meant to say, interesting article @Baileysforchristmas, thanks.

I'm not sure who the target for the PR would be though?
It's not as if we'd get any thanks from the EU, and our own media would probably spin it as Boris selling us out

Motorina · 22/03/2021 19:25

Agreed.

UK media would spin it as Boris selling us out.
European media would spin it as us giving in and letting the EU have (some) of what they're due.

And hte demands would continue.

The world is watching. And we need trade deals.
