Or will there be more lockdowns

OP posts:
ChocOrange1 · 27/02/2021 13:02

I think this will be the final lockdown, but I thought that in November too so obviously I don't actually know! The number of people being vaccinated is incredible and that really is the only way out of lockdowns.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 27/02/2021 13:06

It's not the end of covid, and no one can know yet about lockdowns - especially during the winter months next year. Vaccines will help both though.

UhtredRagnarson · 27/02/2021 13:08
Confused

How on earth could it be the end of covid? Have you watched any news at all? Covid is here for good.

ssd · 27/02/2021 13:09

Covid is a virus. Watch the news.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 27/02/2021 13:14

I think we will end up back with restrictions again as too many aren’t bothering with the rules now, mass gatherings start again soon and everything is opening back up. Not enough have been vaccinated yet and children aren’t being done so plenty of scope for the virus still.

x2boys · 27/02/2021 13:15

Covid won't go away, but with vaccines ,the hope is that people will be protected from becoming seriously ill and needing to go into hospital ,so hopefully yes this is the last lockdown .

ringringdia · 27/02/2021 13:15

Beginning of the end of ‘this’ but covid will be around for the long haul

LucilleTheVampireBat · 27/02/2021 13:18

I can't see there being another lockdown. I honestly don't think people would comply. I know there are plenty (particularly on here!) who have totally swallowed the fear campaign, but I do believe they are in the minority now.

SmudgeButt · 27/02/2021 13:26

nope - not the end. there will be more lockdown as the infection rates yo-yo and the virus mutates. Might be approaching normal sometime in 2024.

Not that some people will pay much attention to lockdowns! they don't now and won't in the future. which of course will contribute to the yo-yo effect.

ringringdia · 27/02/2021 13:29

@SmudgeButt 😂😂😂

2024?

  1. No
  2. Why 2024?
Rockbird · 27/02/2021 13:33

What is it Churchill said about the end of the beginning? It'll be around forever now in some form but this is the last lockdown. There may be some restrictions next winter but nothing like it has been. Anyone saying otherwise is needlessly pessimistic.

Chloemol · 27/02/2021 13:34

It’s not the end of covid, that’s something we have to live with, possibly annual jabs?

As to lockdowns, who knows. If we ALL ( yes Mumsnetters I also mean all you who you refuse, use common sense to follow rules, bend them when you want cos you know best) follow the rules, hopefully not

AgeLikeWine · 27/02/2021 13:40

Probably.

The vaccines are highly effective, 29% of the adult population has already had a first dose and take-up among vulnerable groups has been much higher than anyone expected.

But...

Nobody knows what take-up rates will be in the non-vulnerable population, and most experts expect it to be significantly lower than among the vulnerable unless governments introduce tough ‘vaccine passport’ rules. Which they may do, of course. Also, new variants may emerge agains which the current vaccines are significantly less effective.

Blaggingit123 · 27/02/2021 13:43

Totally dependent on vaccine success/potential mutations, but hopefully it will never be quite this bad and it is the end of school closures/lockdowns. Can’t see that’s it’s anything to do with whether anyone follows arbitrary rules, since we’re looking at an end of all such rules in less than 4 months - that’s just the method of suppressing transmission during the vaccine roll out. Once groups 1-9 are jabbed and have sufficient immunity, the rules are pointless. Hoping next winter will just be akin to a bad flu winter like 2018.

SpringisSpinning · 27/02/2021 13:45

Well it's about managing it now and seeing how we go next winter, can we vaccine everyone again, will the vaccine match the mutation at that time etc. Will flu come again

mummymeister · 27/02/2021 13:50

Definately cant see there being any more lockdowns because the govt cant afford the funding and people will just not comply any more. this last one was barely a lockdown more of a shutdown of certain businesses. the roads are normal around us and people out and about as they usually are. All those under 70 with no conditions who are vaccine refusers will be pushing people out the way to get it done when they realise that no jab means no foriegn holidays.

2024.... did too crystal ball tell you that...?

Shodan · 27/02/2021 15:06

2024 Grin Hmm

FFS. What a load of tosh.

Honestly this kind of stupid bullshit is just so frustrating. Yes, most people would comply with another lockdown the same way that most people comply with all our laws. The 'fear campaign' is a mind blowingly ridiculous term. You really think you're so much cleverer than everyone, don't you? Well you're not. They're just more empathetic and less narrow minded.
Beaniecats · 27/02/2021 15:15

Compliance is down the pan, so think finally yes restrictions will end Bit late as trashed the economy, education, hospitality, tourism sectors and country is bankrupt let's hope it was all worth it eh?

Think you're right
ACovidofWitches · 27/02/2021 15:17

There is absolutely no one in the world who can answer this for you unfortunately

It is very likely there will be no further lockdowns. I would be very surprised if there were. However there might be one in the middle of next winter or in a future winter for a short period of time. It's more likely that we will have some form of restrictions at some point but they won't be as extreme and we will actually be ok moving forward. The vaccines are really effective, we're getting through people really quickly and we have more treatment options now. There are more to come, too, which mean Covid won't pose such a big threat.

lubeybooby · 27/02/2021 15:22

I don't think the end of covid, many countries haven't even started vaccinating yet or progressing very slowly, plus sadly too many anti vaxxers to ever eradicate it like with smallpox

I have high hopes of this being the last lockdown, I wish it was just 2/3 weeks longer to let us get the numbers down more and even more vaccinations done first, as the plan currently stands it feels a bit dicey but I hope all goes well and restrictions gradually ease from here, and don't return.

zafferana · 27/02/2021 15:25

No, this isn't the end of Covid, because we don't yet have enough doses of vaccine to vaccinate enough of the global population to crush this virus once and for all and without that new variants will keep developing and some of them may threaten already vaccinated populations, such as the UK will soon be.

Beaniecats · 27/02/2021 15:28

It's over people aren't going to be terrified into submission any more.
