77 year old no side effects from AZ vaccine

I know, I KNOW... apparently it doesn’t mean it’s not working.

But I’m still looking for reassurance.

My 77 year old dad finally had his first dose of the Oxford vaccine on Monday, but he’s not had a single side effect - not even a sore arm! He mentioned to me that he’d read about side effects meaning the vaccine is working and I quickly reassured him that it indeed does, but not feeling them doesn’t mean it’s not working. It broke my
heart that he was even worrying about that. I’m the worrier, not him!

However, my anxiety is getting the better of me and I’m scared he’s not getting any protection.

I did read briefly that side effects are more common in under 50’s.

Anyone with elderly parents/grandparents found them to have no side effects either?

Yes my gran. She is 92. No side effects at all from AZ.

CheeseJalapenoBread · 24/02/2021 07:45

My parents, both late 60s had no side effects. Likewise my in laws, both in their 70s.

UpstartCorvid · 24/02/2021 07:49

I'm 60, I barely had any.

LApprentiSorcier · 24/02/2021 07:50

My parents and MIL are all late 70s and none of them had side-effects.

HeddaGarbled · 24/02/2021 07:51

Yes, 90 year old mum, no side effects at all.

whatswithtodaytoday · 24/02/2021 07:52

Both my parents had minimal side effects, just a bit sore at the infection site for a day. They're over 70. It doesn't mean it hasn't worked, it's just that older people's immune systems don't react as strongly, so they don't get the systemic (all-over) effects.

Evidence out this week shows the vaccines have a very high level of efficacy in older people.

whatswithtodaytoday · 24/02/2021 07:52

*injection not infection! Thanks auto-correct 😁

ChocOrange1 · 24/02/2021 07:52

I don't know anyone who had side effects, apart from a bit of a sore arm.

PandemicPalava · 24/02/2021 07:53

My Nan is panicking that she had no side effects from Pfizer and is hoping for them from the second dose. I've tried to explain that's not how it works. Please don't worry

Malin52 · 24/02/2021 07:53

Both my parents, stoic, get on with it; no side effects.
DH's parents; everything's a bother, tell you blow by blow accounts of their day; terrible side effects apparently. Had to take to their beds.

OverTheRainbow88 · 24/02/2021 07:53

94 year old gran... no side effects at all from actual covid... just tested as careworker had covid

Redcherries · 24/02/2021 07:54

I read an article yesterday about this, sorry I can’t recall where. It said that side effects from AZ mainly hit younger people, the percentage of older people experiencing them was far far lower but it wasn’t a concern on effect.

Nosideeffectsatall · 24/02/2021 07:54

Perfect - loving these responses! I did find it odd that he didn’t even get a localised reaction at the injection site!

Yes, my Mum. Also no side effects. And I also worried!

DoraChance · 24/02/2021 07:55

My 75 year old dad had no side effects at all either.

Bagelsandbrie · 24/02/2021 07:56

Most of the older people I know who’ve had the vaccines - either of them - had no side effects at all.

It’s been the younger people- like me, cev aged 40, who have tended to feel rotten for a day or so afterwards!

3GIANTSTRAWBERRIES · 24/02/2021 07:57

No-one I know has has any side effects.

starfish4 · 24/02/2021 07:58

I only had mine side effects, my two friends had nothing.I read something yesterday that lack of side effects doesn't mean anything.

Masterpieceontheshelf · 24/02/2021 08:00

Grin this definitely mirrors what I have observed with the people I know who have had the jab!

Not a vaccine expert so might be way off here but I wonder if young people are more likely to have already encountered the virus (front line workers are the majority of younger people vaccinated at this moment) and so their immune system recognises the virus protien and launches an immediate reaction - so fever, swelling, general malaise everything you would expect with a virus.

For people who haven't encountered the virus before the response of the immune system will be slower and over a few weeks working in the background to create memory cells in the case of future infections so will generally not see a strong reaction - although maybe will with the second dose as the immune system will be primed for immediate response by the first dose.

Just a theory though Smile

FuzzyPuffling · 24/02/2021 08:16

I'm on day 4 of quite horrid side effects but I have an auto immune disease, so it's expected.
I am not a moaner and the idea that the only people who get side effects are whingers is not helpful.

OliveTree75 · 24/02/2021 08:20

My grandparents in their 80s had no side effects.

sashagabadon · 24/02/2021 08:26

Not everyone gets side effects but I guess you mostly hear from those that do!

Emlemily · 24/02/2021 08:28

My DM, 78, no side effects from the AZ vaccine.

Parky04 · 24/02/2021 08:30

I'm 49 and no symptoms at all. Didn't even feel the needle.
