77 year old no side effects from AZ vaccine

I know, I KNOW... apparently it doesn’t mean it’s not working.

But I’m still looking for reassurance.

My 77 year old dad finally had his first dose of the Oxford vaccine on Monday, but he’s not had a single side effect - not even a sore arm! He mentioned to me that he’d read about side effects meaning the vaccine is working and I quickly reassured him that it indeed does, but not feeling them doesn’t mean it’s not working. It broke my
heart that he was even worrying about that. I’m the worrier, not him!

However, my anxiety is getting the better of me and I’m scared he’s not getting any protection.

I did read briefly that side effects are more common in under 50’s.

Anyone with elderly parents/grandparents found them to have no side effects either?

@Malin52

Both my parents, stoic, get on with it; no side effects. DH's parents; everything's a bother, tell you blow by blow accounts of their day; terrible side effects apparently. Had to take to their beds.
If this theory is correct, my DP has a relative who will be getting 'literally blue-lighted to hospital' right about now.

Note: 'literally blue-lighted to hospital' does not mean what we mere mortals think it means. It means getting a taxi, and asking the driver to hurry, 'and the driver said he'd never seen anyone so ill and if he had a blue light he'd have put it on', and then being sent home shortly after being seen by the triage nurse.

I had mine at 4 yesterday, feel a bit ropey but that's about it

orangejuicer · 24/02/2021 08:36

My dad, 79, nothing at all. I think he had AZ but I can't be sure.

Fontella · 24/02/2021 08:38

74 year old friend. Had AZ. Nil side effects not even sore at injection site.

Tamtam86 · 24/02/2021 08:39

My dad (70) and FIL (64) had no side effects, my mum (65) did have pretty bad side effects but they only lasted a day then she was back to normal

PutYourBackIntoit · 24/02/2021 08:39

My 97 year old nan, my in laws in their 70s and my mum in her 60s all had AZ, no effects at all.

I, in my 40s, the most vigorous fever I've ever had.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/02/2021 08:49

Dh and I (both early 70s) had the AZ. He had no reaction at all, I had fluey shivers and shakes the same night, but fine in the morning.

I’ve never had a reaction at all to any other jab, inc. the flu one, so wasn’t expecting any this time.

PuzzledObserver · 24/02/2021 08:52

My Mum, 85, no side effects at all.

sonnysunshine · 24/02/2021 08:52

@FuzzyPuffling I agree. I have a chronic condition that is really debilitating. But none of my colleagues or even my boss know I have it I just crack on and work through the pain. I had side effects for about 4 days which wasn't a surprise at all. but isn't very nice to read that this is because I'm a chronic whinger

Nosideeffectsatall · 24/02/2021 08:54

@UpstartCorvid That actually made me laugh out loud.Grin

My parents are in their late 60s and just had a sore arm. My sister is 31 and didn't show any signs of discomfort or pain (she has a learning disability and is non-verbal). Anecdotally side effects do seem more common in younger people. I don't think he needs to worry 🙂

FossilisedFanny · 24/02/2021 08:55

Both my parents in their late 80’s felt right as rain . They’re tough old boots , my dad once got a bus to hospital with a very obviously broken arm because he didn’t want to bother anyone !

DahliaMacNamara · 24/02/2021 09:01

Conversely, DH was convinced he was too hard and masculine to notice any side effects, and was slightly put out at having to go to bed early on two consecutive weekend nights due to fatigue and mild fever. His parents didn't have any side effects at all.

Nosideeffectsatall · 24/02/2021 09:03

Fab. I think it’s clear then that side effects aren’t common at all in the elderly! Very reassuring.

All 4 of my relatives aged 89 -91 have had no side effects whatsoever.

DarthWeeder · 24/02/2021 09:07

My dad, no side effects at all, not even a sore arm. My mum, very ill for 4 days to the point where she had to go for a covid test because we were all convinced she had it (test was negative).

VoyageInTheDark · 24/02/2021 09:22

My parents are in their 70s and both were fine, no side effects. In laws are same age and felt a bit ropey for a day then fine

findingschools4myboys · 24/02/2021 09:42

@Nosideeffectsatall
Hope I can make you feel better. My husband is CEV and had covid last March. Several positive antibody tests. When he had another antibody test just before he had his first jab it didn’t show up with any line at all on the test. He had his jab 3 weeks ago and had literally no side effects. Yesterday evening I made him do another antibody test and that igG line was the strongest I have ever seen. No igM line which means no acute infection but very strong igG line. So clearly the jab produced a strong antibody response even though he had zero symptoms.

findingschools4myboys · 24/02/2021 09:43

Just to add my husband is in his 40’s.

High five in solidarity with you.
And I hope you're feeling fine (relatively speaking) now.

FuzzyPuffling · 24/02/2021 13:15

If this theory is correct, my DP has a relative who will be getting 'literally blue-lighted to hospital' right about now.

This is because your relative is a twat, not because of some generalised view that "people who have side effects are whingers". Stop it.

Yorkshirepudding1987 · 24/02/2021 13:17

I'm 34 and had AZ on Sunday. Only issue I had was a sore armpit on Monday morning.

Side effects aren't guaranteed to happen.
