Why are people so bloody negative

Coyoacan · 08/02/2021 15:22

This is a TAAT except that it not just one thread but all the time. Someone posts that they can't cope with lockdown and are thinking of killing themselves and instead of people giving them strategies to survive and maybe some reason to hope, they just pile on with even more bad news. Mumsnet is getting frankly dangerous for the suicidal.

OP posts:
LivingMyBestLife2020 · 08/02/2021 15:24

I have to agree with you. I think I’m going to have a break for a while

TimeForLunch · 08/02/2021 15:30

I see this happening a lot too. Anyone struggling with lockdown gets a hard time and told to put up with it whereas someone ill with coronavirus gets all the sympathy! Not all the time but sometimes it seems like the only thing anyone is allowed to suffer with is the virus as that is all that matters.

starfish88 · 08/02/2021 15:32

I can see how people latch on to bad news and spread negativity that way. I went through a horrible phase of that, looking out for bad news and worrying over it. I felt like I was being prepared but I just made myself feel rubbish.

The stuff you're describing goes beyond negative and into cruel.

lunapeace · 08/02/2021 15:36

Absolutely agree. I don't think mumsnet is a particularly nice place to be in general if I'm honest.

Delatron · 08/02/2021 15:36

I think mumsnet needs to take those threads down. They are jumped on by the lockdown fanatics and the OP sinks in to further depression.
Irresponsible when people are struggling so much.

Inastatus · 08/02/2021 15:38

I agree. The coronavirus threads are largely full of doom muppets who seem to like wallowing in misery. I am not in denial about the whole thing but I just hate how a negative spin is put on everything. I usually only look at the positive news thread otherwise I find myself getting dragged down by posters who insist we won’t see any signs of normal life until 2025!

x2boys · 08/02/2021 15:42

I agree competitive misery helps no one .

MarshaBradyo · 08/02/2021 15:42

There’s a fair few for whom lock down benefits and they don’t see the huge cost.

A minority but a loud one on here.

Heyahun · 08/02/2021 15:55

Yeah it’s just fuels the state of despair tbh - everyone piling on more negativity

I can’t bare to read another post saying what is the end date? Why don’t we have one

Ffs we don’t know when it’s going to end - that’s why we don’t have an end date. We just have to wait it out.

BogRollBOGOF · 08/02/2021 15:59

Doubly frustrating when the OP is missing something that was viable in 2020 (at least in much of the country, and some doom muppet announces as fact that it's not going to happen for years, such as swimming or toddler groups that are not subject to external governments' polices too.

Times are rubbish and many are struggling. We need realistic glimmers of hope on the horizon to keep limping on day after day until those better times come. And they will come because this situation is socially and economically insustainable.

x2boys · 08/02/2021 16:14

We all know it's shit and it's been a dreadful year ,but things are getting better particularly with the vaccines but some posters just have to pour negativity on everything

BeautifulStar · 08/02/2021 16:17

Misery likes company, that’s all. If you have no life, no friends, no outside family and/or are comfortable being locked away in your own little bubble it’s easy to tell everyone else they should be the same - and that they’re selfish if they’re not ok with that.

Luckily most of us are NOT ok with that!

Updatemate · 08/02/2021 16:25

I agree. People are just moan, moan, moan. And people who post good news are accused of boasting, like you can't possibly have any fun or enjoy anything at the moment because other people might not be. We've had lots to be grateful for recently, enjoyed lots of things and had lots of fun. Apparently that's not allowed though.

Letshavesometea · 08/02/2021 16:25

I agree- i frequently work night shifts and during quiet periods would be on mumsnet, I've had to stop it because people are even more depressing at 3am and I would say I'm mentally ok. Goodness knows the impact on people who are genuinely struggling mentally.

cannotchange · 08/02/2021 16:35

There was someone on a thread today listing all lockdowns we'll be having after this one - a firebreak lockdown in October/November and then another one like this one December to March 2022 - FFS !!!!!!!!

Toocold · 08/02/2021 16:41

cannotchange.. I read that too! It’s bonkers! No basis for it whatsoever, I genuinely don’t understand why they think that if we will all be vaccinated ( I hope!) and it did not help the OP at all.

Shitzngiggles · 08/02/2021 16:42

@cannotchange I saw that post. Unbelievable that someone posting that would in any way think it helpful to anyone. Apart from the fact its a highly unlikely scenario.

Cornettoninja · 08/02/2021 16:57

I agree @Coyoacan. I’ve thought about starting a discussion for a couple of weeks but wasn’t sure how it would be received - you’re braver than me!

Sometimes, particularly the coronavirus board, reminds me of those pro-ana, pro self harm forums. There’s a fine line between seeking and getting support and entrenching harmful views and behaviour.

I’m not convinced MN is the right place for people to seek and expect support right now. Everything is so hyper focussed and there are definitely people here pushing agendas.

Cornettoninja · 08/02/2021 17:00

Maybe MN need to enforce a stricter policy of moving clearly MH related posts to the MH board.

JimmyTheBrave · 08/02/2021 17:20

I saw that too, it's like people thrive on giving people shitty news. And this isn't even news, just total hearsay.

A while back you couldn't move on a Covid thread for posters claiming "there will never be a vaccine!" trying to piss on everyone's parade. Now they've been proved wrong it's understandable they'd move on to some other nonsense. Wish they'd fuck off though.

CoronaIsWatching · 08/02/2021 17:31

No strategy for coming out of lockdown from the gov't, no confirmation restrictions will be removed once everyone's vaccinated, even suggestions they will carry on for years. I think it's bloody understandable

Coyoacan · 08/02/2021 17:41

Whao, I'm glad to see so many people agree with me.

I don't live in the UK but we have more or less the same level of hospital occupancy here in Mexico, while our vaccination programme has been seriously held up by the Pfizer fiasco, but we don't have the constant drip, drip of bad news you are being subjected to in the UK.

OP posts:
x2boys · 08/02/2021 17:52

I think the Government are just being cautious @CoronaIsWatching ,nobody really wants to be in this position again ,cases are going down nicely now ,and the vaccination program is going well ,they can't say for sure when lockdown will end but ,I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic.

Haffiana · 08/02/2021 18:00

Can someone suggest an actual example of a helpful post then? One that would ease the mind of someone who is suffering and can't bear it and wants to know when lockdown will end?

Because all I see on this thread is more of the same negativity - except being negative about other posters rather than about lockdown.

gallbladderpain · 08/02/2021 18:01

What people just moan, moan and moan ...yeh like the people moaning about how they can't cope anymore every bloody post of the day ! Those 'when will this end i can't cope' posts are also moaning ! Just get on with it...it will be over when it's over and there's not a thing anyone can say that will change that fact!
