Sad news just announced - he has died today.

A life well lived from what we can gather. He seemed to be a lovely man who had lived a good life.

It's a shame covid had to be the way it finished. I hope it was calm and peaceful, and with his family close by.

What a shame, but 100-year-olds are very frail.

A lot of folk these days seem to have forgotten that the frail elderly are just that.

Very sad news and shedding a tear which I never expected to do. He was certainly an inspiration.

Such sad news, what an inspirational man.

There was something so incredibly genuine about him. I know I didn't know him but he did more for public morale and the NHS than anyone else. He was an inspiration. My heart goes out to his family.

Just seen this news I know he was 100 etc, but it's a big loss.

It’s sad to hear, but what a year he had!!! Amazing, and that’s what he will be remembered for, all his greatness!

Ah, he went out in a blaze of glory at a good old age. I’m happy for him. Great man.

I am unexpectedly quite sad. As others have said, what an amazing cap to a long life. I hate this pandemic.

I find it sad. That said it's really grating that his family were on hand whereas countless others - who weren't celebs-of-the-moment - have died without that comfort. I wonder how those families feel?

I loath this hero-worshipping intensely and wish it would just stop.

Been dreading this news since I heard Sir Tom had been admitted to hospital. Feeling very sad, RIP.

This country will be a poorer place without him in it, a true British hero and a good man.

Awful news

I agree 100% with @LyingWitchInTheWardrobe.

I bet people who have lost loved ones who they were prevented from being with at the end, feel very cheated at the news that Captain Tom's family were all gathered around him. Was he not on a Covid Ward?? Or did his celebrity status earn him a private room?

How sad. He did an amazing thing for the NHS.

Such sad news but what a wonderful legacy he left behind. A truly inspirational character and, yes, it does seem a cruel irony for him to die from Covid after all he did for the NHS during the pandemic.

He wanted to live to be 103 but no bookies would take bets on it. I just wanted him to outlive the pandemic too as a sign of our triumph over it.

He said "If tomorrow is my last day, if all those I loved are waiting for me, then that tomorrow will be a good day too.”
I hope it is a good day for him. The world is a better place for him having lived.
