Not just Arlene Foster sounding like the unexpectedly reasonable one: www.thejournal.ie/arlene-foster-astrazeneca-supply-northern-ireland-protocol-5339702-Jan2021/
"Sinn Féin vice president Michelle O’Neill said this evening she’d spoken to the Irish government to raise her “very serious concerns” about the invoking of Article 16.

She said: “This is a totally ill judged move by the EU and should not have been triggered. Calm heads need to prevail, this needs sorted urgently.”"

So, the EC has united all of NI for once, as well as UK (apart from Nicola Sturgeon possibly) and RoI. It seems a larger aggression focusses minds.

Backbee · 29/01/2021 20:30

I didn't know that's what Israel agreed, but that's really clever.

Wildswim · 29/01/2021 20:30

The truth is the EU hid behind the peace process for years and used both NI and ROI as pawns in order to try to thwart Brexit and then try to maintain the single market.

They couldn't give a toss about peace. This confirms it.

I'm raging.

EerieSilence · 29/01/2021 20:30

@DigitalGhost can you please show me the data where other countries except for Germany only got 15K vaccines so far?

OppsUpsSide · 29/01/2021 20:30

But AZ agreed to it?

Did they?

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has issued a stark warning to Brussels, saying that if the current port chaos problems with trade to Northern Ireland persist, he will have no hesitation in invoking Article 16 of the Brexit protocol, and simply tear up the agreement relating to making checks on goods and vehicles compulsory at the ports[/quote]
Saying is not doing.
And port chaos is very different to implementing a border just because you do want a particular country to get any more life-saving vaccines.

How petty of the EU!!

Wildswim · 29/01/2021 20:34

Corruption AND hypocrisy. Preaching to the UK about solidarity!

The EU are escalating even further (beyond Article 16) - Ambrose Evans Pritchard in the Telegraph www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2021/01/29/eu-threatens-war-time-occupation-vaccine-makers-crisis-spirals/

"The European Council is preparing to invoke emergency powers of Article 122 against AstraZeneca and Big Pharma within days."

"This nuclear option paves the way for the seizure of intellectual property and data, and arguably direct control over the production process"

(The article 122 refers to the Lisbon treaty, not the Brexit treaty).

Ohthatsgreat · 29/01/2021 20:37

Seeing reports France is closing its borders to non EU countries including freight. This is really worrying

DigitalGhost · 29/01/2021 20:37

@eeriesilence it was all over the Italian news at the beginning of January.

Justanotherlurker · 29/01/2021 20:38

Czech closes its boarders

Portugal closes land boarder with Spain

www.thelocal.es/20210128/portugal-closes-land-border-with-spain-as-virus-cases-soar

And the EU deserve a second slow hand clap for threating Article 122

www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2021/01/29/eu-threatens-war-time-occupation-vaccine-makers-crisis-spirals/

If this act goes through expext a lot of multinational business leave EU soil.

@Wildswim

The Commission is here to stay. MEP's can be voted in or out but only have rubber stamping capability.

Precisely. This is why I voted Leave. And I wondered for the life of me why no-one on Mumsnet ever seemed to spot this weakness in the EU?

I’m with you, I’ve been called both stupid and racist (and a few other things to the point of bullying) for pointing out all the faults in the EU which are rapidly showing their face here. Most recently a post on something like ‘name one positive thing to come out of Brexit’ I mentioned the number of vaccines we had administered compared with Europe and was told this had nothing to do with leaving the EU.

Thank God people are now seeing it in the U.K. and round the world

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 29/01/2021 20:40

@ohthatsgreat where have you seen that

Baileysforchristmas · 29/01/2021 20:40

I’ve just read a very interesting article in the Guardian which was very daming of the EU which is unheard of about how the EU messed up and how the UK got ahead but at the end of the article it said EU ambassador with commission officials earlier this week, the message was the capitals were unimpressed.

The commission was told to change their terms of the debate- we just want our vaccines, that’s all we want.

I feel sorry for Europeans, there was no need for all this, the UK would’ve shared. 😢

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 29/01/2021 20:41

On a phone app is that the same

Wildswim · 29/01/2021 20:41

I'm actually gobsmacked at the behaviour of the EU. Plus I now see they contributed a fraction of the money that the UK and US did towards vaccine development. (see chart).

They've all gone quite mad.

How much would it have hurt for them to hold up their hands and admit that they were tardy in their vaccine procurement procedure? They're undoing years of 'soft power' almost literally overnight.

EerieSilence · 29/01/2021 20:41

@DigitalGhost I know that in Slovakia, which with 5 million inhabitants is essentially a fart in the EU ocean they managed to vaccinated over 108K persons by now. Wonder how they did it with 15 thousand vaccinations, probably diluted them or something?

Ohthatsgreat · 29/01/2021 20:42

And the EU deserve a second slow hand clap for threating Article 122

I actually feel a bit sick reading that. I really hope things don’t head in this direction.

FOJN · 29/01/2021 20:42

"This nuclear option paves the way for the seizure of intellectual property and data, and arguably direct control over the production process"

Christ I wish we could row ourselves further out into the Atlantic to get away from the absolute lunatics running the show on the other side of the channel.

Where? I can't imagine French businesses would be very happy with that

Does this matter to us?

They can’t seize here / India and if they want to order production in other sites in EU, fine?

What do you think, not sure if I’m seeing it right

It is hard core no doubt but where are we producing U.K. Ox / Az - India and here?

Any in Netherlands or is that for EU

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 29/01/2021 20:43

@Frodont yes and the french do hold there goverment to account when they want to

Re France

news.sky.com/story/covid-19-france-to-close-borders-to-all-countries-outside-the-european-union-12202746

I’m seeing other reports that haulage is exempt. I’m sure we will know more in the coming hours.
