Sorry, link fail - this is the link about the Yorkshire based company making the Pfizer ingredients - www.business-live.co.uk/manufacturing/croda-cracks-vital-vaccine-ingredient-19384154

cathyandclare · 29/01/2021 16:56

Sorry Best Reasonable Efforts (not have) to come from the EU

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 29/01/2021 16:56

@Fitzsimmonsmarvel even of that ends up being the case they shouldn't be blaming the uk.
We signed ours before and would have no idea what eu contract was like, this should be them fighting az then if az has to say to uk , we have to send to eu and are breaking your contract , then uk takes that up ,or maybe they sit down together and discuss what can be done in short term until supplies level off

tatutata · 29/01/2021 16:56

I just want to know why this isn't before the courts. The EU is acting illegally.

marbellamarc · 29/01/2021 16:56

Again, was the EU expecting millions of doses to sit uselessly in fridges while they conducted their snail's pace approval? Instead of being put to good use potentially saving lives in Britain?

Apparently so

Gadzookery · 29/01/2021 16:57

@Toptotoeunicolour

Swedish press is reporting that EU now want the UK's contract with AZ published. Absolutely no hope whatsoever I would think.
If there are confidentiality obligations in the contract between UK and AZ - which is extremely likely - it's hard to see how it could be published - unless both sides waive it.

I didn't think the benefits of Brexit would manifest themselves so quickly post 31.12.20 to be honest.

Waspnest · 29/01/2021 16:58

Thank you Floppy. Might just tune into the press conference now....

FitzsimmonsMarvel · 29/01/2021 16:58

@IcedPurple the delivery was due to be ready for the EU in Q1 and the approval has gone through today. The doses were pre-paid for. They were not subject to approval already being granted before their production if you look at the contract. The doses take time to create (obviously given they now can’t meet the order) so yes they should have kept them for use in EU as part of fulfilling their obligation to the EU.

Did you think they were making the million doses in one day before delivery? Clearly they produce them and stockpile them for delivery date.

marbellamarc · 29/01/2021 16:59

Redtoothbrush said earlier Covid was a far bigger threat to the EU than Brexit ever was. I think she's right.

Absolutely. One area of valid criticism is that they are slower & less reactive & the pandemic has exposed that. Plus the notion of one "country" is lacking when individual countries protect themselves first.

picklemewalnuts · 29/01/2021 16:59

Can we not have offensive references to the second world war, 'third reich, lebensraum' etc?

It's a fascinating thread, I'm proud of British pharmaceuticals/medical research etc, but think nazi references inappropriate.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 29/01/2021 16:59

@CaveMum I hope we don't hold
It back though as that makes us no better than them and peoples life's are at risk, when all said and done.

CountessFrog · 29/01/2021 16:59

I’m keen to know whether those who have had their first pfeizer vaccine will be prevented from getting the second

DH is an ITU consultant who had his second vaccination cancelled because his first was administered at the end of December. I find it very worrying that he might not get his second dose. He has an appointment due 11 weeks after the first.

Spanish one is reporting that the British have things to hide and that’s why they’re refusing to show it
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 29/01/2021 17:00

@picklemewalnuts yes agree we should move past that , its history and doesn't help.

Eyewhisker · 29/01/2021 17:00

AZ can only claim ‘best efforts’ as an excuse not to do a proportional reduction as Pfizer/BioNTech have done if the U.K. contract has a clause saying U.K. supply takes precedence. The interview with the CEO of AZ implied that they did. Otherwise, the natural step is to reduce orders proportionally, not keep one order at 100% and reduce another to 25%.

The issue here is not that the EU is ‘bullying’ by insisting EU plants fulfill EU orders first - that is the same policy as in the US and the U.K. - but it is doing so retrospectively. Not good.

we should be the bigger person but I say make the EU grovel 😆

Absolutely, I wouldn’t want us to sink to that level but it might give them pause for thought.

FitzsimmonsMarvel · 29/01/2021 17:01

Too many people here setting this as a U.K. vs EU thing and hyperbole about ‘stealing our vaccine’ ‘abusive relationship with the U.K.’ ‘glad we’ve left the EU’ and other nonsense

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 29/01/2021 17:01

@EasterIssland they are bold accusations and how can they tell us we should print our contract its between us and az and we are under no obligation to share.

Waspnest · 29/01/2021 17:01

Clearly they produce them and stockpile them for delivery date.

What on earth makes you think that?!

CaraDuneRedux · 29/01/2021 17:01

@NebbiaZanzare

Where was EU solidarity when Germany blocked exports of the masks it was stockpiling towards Italy, at a time when Italy was dying on its feet and Germany had minimal cases?

Yes. And neither than nor "Coronapizza" has been forgotten.

Which is why I think most of this is pantomime for the benefit of those of us on this side of the Alps and Chunnel, rather than intended for a U.K. audience.

Watching how formerly pro-EU friends turned anti here in Lombardia when the pandemic started I can see why the EU would not want another round of being found lacking.

Personally I'm not sure if I can cope with the triple whammy of Brexit, a pandemic and a blooming Italexit movement that gets put down with the EU in panicking iron fist mode. We're in no state to cope with whatever punishment heads our way.

But I'm fairly resigned to it at this point. The cracks in the dam are growing at such a rate that I'm no longer at all sure they can by poly filtered over fast enough to stop the walls blowing out.

Redtoothbrush said earlier Covid was a far bigger threat to the EU than Brexit ever was. I think she's right. No idea if this is the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning though. Just anticipating it being very painful for us over here in Italy (again) either way.

Flowers Nebbia

Some of the stuff going on is scary at the moment (I was fairly shaken by the poll in the last few days suggesting Macron would only have a 4 point lead over Le Pen in a hypothetical presidential runoff were it to happen tomorrow).

MarshaBradyo · 29/01/2021 17:01

Spanish one is reporting that the British have things to hide and that’s why they’re refusing to show it

All you can do is ignore desperate taunts.

Spanish need to look at who created their problems - the EU. Not U.K.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 29/01/2021 17:01

@FitzsimmonsMarvel are the eu mot doing that with the wording they have used ?

marbellamarc · 29/01/2021 17:02

Spanish one is reporting that the British have things to hide and that’s why they’re refusing to show it

Even if we did why is that relevant?

Justthebeerlighttoguide · 29/01/2021 17:02

Astra zeneka is a big company who can look after themselves.
