So.....

Last year we deferred our summer holiday to grab canaria.... currently it’s booked for around 18th May

What are your opinions on whether this will go ahead or should I make alternative plans for a staycation?

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 17/01/2021 11:41

Ooooh difficult. We just don't know what's going to happen. Today's comments were very hopeful. If it was July/August I would feel less concerned I think.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/01/2021 11:44

I have one booked for late July (moved from last year) and I feel it will go ahead. Also have Butlins booked at Easter, again moved from last year and I'm much less confident about that.

Lemons1571 · 17/01/2021 12:02

What did Raab say?

Sparklingbrook · 17/01/2021 12:05

@Lemons1571

What did Raab say?
'Phased transition' out of lockdown if vaccine targets met The foreign secretary has said if 88% of the most vulnerable groups have received their first jab, as intended, by mid-February, then "if we have succeeded in hitting those targets... we can start to think about the phased transition out of the national lockdown".

"I think it's fair to say it won't be a big bang," Dominic Raab told Andrew Marr.

"It will be done phased, possibly back through the tiered approach that we had

Sparklingbrook · 17/01/2021 12:06

That was from BBC News. So back to Tiers if targets met. Baby steps and all that though I think.

Scarby9 · 17/01/2021 12:08

Our Christmas family bubble apartment was postponed to Easter. I have zero expectations of that happening.

WrongKindOfFace · 17/01/2021 12:10

Yeah but it’s Raab. I wouldn’t trust him to find his own arse with both hands.

Peggyslantern · 17/01/2021 12:10

I think you have a really good chance OP. I'd be saying differently if you wanted to go somewhere like Australia. Fingers crossed for you.

Sparklingbrook · 17/01/2021 12:10

I remember laughing about possibly wearing masks with snowmen and reindeer on at Christmas last summer. Sad If only I had known.

So many unknowns.

user184628462 · 17/01/2021 12:15

That wasn't my conclusion from what he said, but who knows anymore.

tinselearedcow · 17/01/2021 12:20

I hope you are not over 50 OP. MN hates over 50s booking holidays at the moment!

Fingers crossed for you hopefully things will be better by May.

Delatron · 17/01/2021 13:38

I managed to get abroad last July so if vaccinations go to plan I can’t see why not. May might be a bit early but June/July onwards I am hopeful.

Though someone will pop on in a minute and say there will definitely be no holidays abroad until 2025... Based on nothing.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 17/01/2021 14:17

I can’t see it personally for May. The scientists are warning re releasing lockdown too soon plus non essential travel means other strains can potentially be carried back which the UK is trying the avoid given recent actions.

FranklyTruly · 17/01/2021 14:21

The experts are very clear that lockdown cannot be released until everyone has been vaccinated. That will not be this year- so lockdown will be in place throughout 2021.

We also know that vaccination does not prevent transmission. So there will be restrictions in place indefinitely in order to keep people safe and prevent Long COVID.

Lockdown of this strictness will not continue until everyone is vaccinated though. It's likely that we will go back to the tier system once the most vulnerable groups are vaccinated, and foreign travel was allowed under the tier system.

The govt plans to have all adults vaccinated by September. Some say that on current rates, it could be as early as June.

We also know that vaccination does not prevent transmission.

We don't know any such thing. Stop making things up. Most experts - as opposed to random posters on a parenting forum - are confident that the vaccines will indeed reduce or prevent transmission. They just can't say so for sure until they have been tested in real-world circumstances.

So there will be restrictions in place indefinitely in order to keep people safe and prevent Long COVID.

You may lock yourself up indefinely. The rest of us won't.

Lemons1571 · 17/01/2021 14:26

I can see “travel corridors” being put in place for the UK summer holiday season (predominantly to France, Spain and Greece). Probably with negative tests 72 hours before. Am hoping there’ll be quicker more accurate type of tests by the summer. Don’t know how they’ll get around children not yet vaccinated. But I suspect something will be put in place.

Wouldn’t hold your breath for the less common holiday destinations though.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/01/2021 14:26

Also we do not know that the vaccine does not prevent transmission. There's not enough evidence on that yet.

Kazzyhoward · 17/01/2021 14:27

It's not just UK though is it? We may be making good progress with vaccinations and reducing infections/deaths by then, but what if Gran Canaria isn't? They may have closed/restricted borders. No one knows what things will be like in May.

SpnBaby1967 · 17/01/2021 14:29

We have our first family holiday abroad ever booked for August. My eldest is 11 and never been abroad.

I'm praying it'll go ahead, I have to pay it at the end of April. I'm nervous about paying such a large amount of money and not knowing if it will go ahead of if we'll get it back in a speedy manner should it not

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/01/2021 14:31

Ah, FranklyTruly with yet another name change posting the same old nonsense that we will never be allowed to see friends or family again. Yawn.

Newhorizons0412 · 17/01/2021 14:37

What do we think about a visit to the US at end of Sept 2021 - likely or no? Seems such a long way off that I want to feel optimistic but without getting holes up too much if that makes sense.

GreenHam · 17/01/2021 15:04

"Yeah but it’s Raab. I wouldn’t trust him to find his own arse with both hands."

This!

Thanks for the heads up on the gloom mongering!
Bananabuddy3 · 17/01/2021 15:13

I was meant to be on a big trip to the US October 2020 - obviously didn’t happen and haven’t rebooked - I’m really keeping fingers crossed for October this year but God knows, I wouldn’t put money on it. I also realise that as soon as borders open and restrictions lift the prices will likely rocket. Got to time booking right.

Have a U.K. holiday postponed from last year currently due for August 2021. Just a different set of walls would be amazing! My hometown is just so unappealing these days!
