When will my sense of smell/ taste come back??

I’m just recovering from covid and aside from the lingering cough, I have zero sense of smell and very slight taste (can detect slight salt/ sweet tastes). Can anyone tell me they’ve had the same and their sense of taste/ smell came back? If so, how long did it take? Ta!

My two dd's had theirs back within a week. However I think they are finding some things taste or smell a little different to normal, but nothing too bad.

BadEyeBri · 13/01/2021 19:00

@Skinnyjeansandaloosetop did your sense of taste and smell go gradually or suddenly?

Skinnyjeansandaloosetop · 13/01/2021 19:03

It went suddenly- is that good or bad!?

LegoPirateMonkey · 13/01/2021 19:04

Exactly the same here! A week later and a lot more of my taste has come back. I really miss my sense of smell.

BadEyeBri · 13/01/2021 19:05

Most people I know it went suddenly but came back gradually over about 2-4weeks. All adults. Get well soon

Kitten11x · 13/01/2021 19:05

About a week for me

Skinnyjeansandaloosetop · 13/01/2021 19:07

So you have had some taste come back @LegoPirateMonkey? Yes not being able to smell is so frustrating. I can’t tell when I’m burning the kids dinner 😂. You don’t appreciate these things til they’re gone!

Skinnyjeansandaloosetop · 13/01/2021 19:09

@BadEyeBri thanks.
Sounds like I just need to be patient then. Should take advantage and start a New Years diet really.

LegoPirateMonkey · 13/01/2021 19:14

Yes, taste has been coming back steadily. I thought it would help me to diet but found that the only things I could taste and therefore wanted to eat were not diet friendly - I have eaten so many crisps! I was given lovely perfume for Christmas and I really want to wear it! I found both senses went very abruptly and it happened as I was starting to feel better and thought I’d got away without losing them!

Skinnyjeansandaloosetop · 13/01/2021 19:20

@LegoPirateMonkey that’s it isn’t it. Crisps, chocolate, coffee with sugar in! They’re pretty much the only things I can get any taste from!

My taste never really went. Well I stopped being able to taste tea but most things I could taste. That said I noticed when my son fed me a quaver and I couldn’t taste it. But most adult food was fine. Smell went suddenly though. Now is 14 days after it went and I can def smell things now though not strongly. I can smell the reed diffuser in my daughter’s room - vanilla - and the nasty kids strawberry soap. And poo earlier - I have never been so pleased to smell poo. Have horrid metallic taste now though - but maybe that is due to the antibiotics they gave me (now finished)?

My sister lost her sense of taste and smell on 15th November and still hasn’t got it back.

Aquamarine1029 · 14/01/2021 00:31

It took my daughter a month to get hers back.

damselindedress · 14/01/2021 00:58

Mine still isn't back after 9 months

colouringindoors · 14/01/2021 01:02

Some people with this say a zinc supplement helps. I've been taking 15mg along with lots of Vit C and D3. After 3 weeks, mines 80% back. Obv doesn't prove anything but no harm...

TheDogsMother · 14/01/2021 01:11

I'm so sorry you are experiencing this and I hope it returns quickly. For entirely different reasons I have had this on and off for seven years. It's utterly miserable.

FlippinNoah · 14/01/2021 01:29

Mine lasted about a week to 10 days. Just woke up one morning, 3 days after testing positive, and it had gone. It's still not completely 'right' now, 3 months later- there's times when I'm eating something and I know I should be 'tasting' it more.

But I'll never take my sense of taste or smell for granted again. It really was awful not to be able to smell or taste a single thing. I was getting really down about it. I was sniffing Vicks everyday in the hope I'd get a trace of it - smelt nothing. The day when I sniffed it and caught the faintest hint felt like I'd won the lottery!

It's completely different to when you have a blocked nose or cold - you can still taste or smell some things then even if a bit 'muted'. With coronavirus my smell and taste just vanished completely.

Chocolateraincloud3 · 14/01/2021 01:38

There’s that Jamaican remedy going around ok tiktok. Helps some people get their taste back

Inkpaperstars · 14/01/2021 03:10

Like a PP, nine months on from what I suspect was Covid and sense of smell still very poor. It’s not nothing at all, I can smell some things but they are usually either very muted, or gross and distorted. I used to have a really strong sense of smell and it is getting me down now.

damselindedress · 14/01/2021 07:39

@Inkpaperstars I have the same issue, what I can now smell some is completely distorted. The other day I was convinced I could smell garlic and was told what I could actually smell was petrol Confused But mainly I can't smell at all. It's very odd.

Mine also went all of a sudden while I was sick. It was there one second and gone the next.

Shopaholic100 · 14/01/2021 10:13

Daughter lost hers a month ago with no return.

Skinnyjeansandaloosetop · 14/01/2021 18:02

Thanks all. A mixed bag of experiences.
Jeremy Vine happened to be talking about this yesterday its at 1h 36: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000r4zx
The woman talking in that is from AbScent - they advocate smell training so I'm going to give it a try... abscent.org/

@GoldStarAngel poop is the one thing I can't seem to smell!! I miss my DD's little fart smells Grin

OP, I hear you. I was utterly distraught at losing smell (taste never totally went). It took two weeks or a bit more and as others have said I don't think it's fully returned.

My DH hasn't been as lucky but he is getting some stuff back and can smell certain things. We had it early October.
