I'm so fuming with the way he has fucked up our children's education, ignored nurseries in any discussions about why he hasn't closed them and now withdrawing funding for children whose parents decide not to send them. And then to have the cheek to tell parents to complain to ofsted if they are not happy with their child's home learning after schools were given 12 hours notice to prepare. He's a absolute disgrace.

Education is the one thing they’ve fucked up and then continued to fuck up even more. Last Sunday schools were safe. By Monday night they were closed til Easter.

Crunchymum · 07/01/2021 21:57

I can't stand the man but schools have known that online learning was a possibility for months now and were advised to prepare for it.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 07/01/2021 21:58

No, they haven’t SAID it...
mrshoho · 07/01/2021 22:06

Yes agree but he's in effect Boris Johnson's puppet and scapegoat. Don't let Boris Johnson get away with the blame.

@Jourdain11

Boris bumbled about they 'hope' they 'might' get some children back to school after feb half term. That's what they said in the summer and only a few years could go back so I think it's safe to assume beyond Easter for all children to be back.

He also went on about how it'll take 3 weeks after feb half term for the top group groups to be fully immune and then another 3 to see the effects on hospitals...again, Easter time.

Callipygion · 07/01/2021 22:07

Gavin Williamson is a complete twat!!

A twat amongst twats. Is there anyone in the govt who isn’t a twat? I can’t think of one. Twatty twatty twat twats the lot of them, and that’s being kind.

Oh no - schools are still safe. Boris said so today. In answer to a question about whether nurseries were safe or not. Schools absolutely are safe, he says. (It’s just the children in them that, um... err... you know... well)
Jinx2020 · 07/01/2021 22:13

A disgusting man.

I will never forget that photo he released of him posed with the whip in the mist of the exams crisis.

Arrogance and entitlement personified. Whatever he holds over Boris must be bad for him to be holding on to his office.

Robbybobtail · 07/01/2021 22:16

March lockdown we received an email each week with workSheets we had to print off and then basically teach and mark them ourselves (which I gave up with about mid-april as I myself had no clue about half of the work given and where’s the motivation when it isn’t even being monitored?)
This time My ds has 2 x 30 min class zoom sessions mon-thurs with his teacher (where she runs through maths and then English tasks) and he then has to complete a short list of questions afterwards. This took him about 5 minutes.

On friday’s they are having one 30min zoom session to discuss their achievements and “focus on pastoral care”. It’s only really dawned on me today that that’s it. Until god knows when?

I’m no teacher - I’m going to be looking for tutors tomorrow to try and make up for the appalling lack of education my child has had for a year (and ongoing). I know it’s hard for the schools but I just think they could do more.

GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 07/01/2021 22:17

Gavin Williamson is an incompetent twat.

Commonwasher · 07/01/2021 22:20

He’s the one who Theresa May sacked for leaking stuff about Huawai/5G when he was SS Defence — and what does bloody Boris do??? Put him in charge of Education. Like other posters have said — I never thought anyone would EVER make Gove look like a preferable alternative.

Sooner this government gets the elbow, the better.

ZigZaggyZoo · 07/01/2021 22:22

The full guidance hasn't yet been published...4 days after schools have been back. How can school staff know the full ins and outs of what they need to do? Maybe do a better job of your role Gav before you encourage people to complain about teachers who are waiting for official guidance from your department.

RickOShay · 07/01/2021 22:23

Yes @RufustheSniggeringReindeer
You are so right Grin

Theunamedcat · 07/01/2021 22:33

It has- this afternoon- it says parents and carers who are critical workers should keep their children at home if they can and an interesting approach to limiting social contact

We know that every school will have a different number of children of critical workers who need to attend. It is important that on-site provision is provided for these pupils, and there is no limit to numbers of these pupils who may attend and schools should not limit attendance of these groups. This is because we are reducing overall social contact across areas and the country rather than individually by each institution.

He's my daughter's MP. When he was canvassing before the election she suggested he visit her hospital to see the NHS at work. His reply, "OOh no. I don't like blood."

GingerandTilly · 07/01/2021 22:42

Crunchy Mum, all schools have prepared two weeks home learning for bubble closures but we can’t just prepare a terms worth of work in advance because what we will need to prepare for a longer period of closure will very much depend on where we have got to with the children’s learning at the point of closure. For instance, we wouldn’t cover numbers to 100 In home learning, if they were only up to numbers to 20 when schools shut.

Also lots of schools, my own included, have been waiting for lap tops which the DfE promised us but which have, unfortunately, not been forthcoming. We requested 60 laptops. We got 8 to share with another school. I could use 8 in my class alone! Instead we’ve been left scrambling trying to find SIM cards for our poorer families and trying to print out home learning materials for them to use instead. And, seeing as most schools only have one (or at max two) photocopiers. Running off 100s of copies of learning packs is actually quite a huge undertaking.

I couldn’t be prouder of how teachers have responded to the current crisis. We have continued to support and teach our most vulnerable children, we have looked after key worker children, we have kept schools open as long as possible despite the risk to our own health and safety. We have campaigned to feed hungry children and literally handed out food parcels to our poorest families and we have done our best to provide home learning, whilst doing all this other stuff as well.

You mean your dc's school could do more? Because my DD's school is doing great and providing more than enough.
wonderstuff · 07/01/2021 22:53

He is unbelievably awful. Clearly Boris has no interest in education or he wouldn't still be in post. Why have they not got a plan for exams? Current years 11 & 13 are in a worse position than last years cohort, effectively lost education equal to half their 2 year course.

Regardless of what you think of teachers if education continues like this there's a very real possibility that the NHS will be overwhelmed and that puts the whole country in danger. I really don't understand why the government and wider public seem to be treating this lockdown as less serious than in the spring when it appears we're in a far worse situation.

Gavin seems hell bent on having as many children in school as possible. Which really doesn't feel like a good idea.
