To coin a mn phrase: is Boris on glue?!

So now I will have to pay to keep my toddler off to keep him (and us) safe?!

No idea what to do now. It's either safe or it isn't for all kids? My 3 year old loved going back today 😵‍💫
It’s not unsafe for children. It’s about spread, which is dramatically reduced due to the closure of primary and secondary schools.
Foilball · 04/01/2021 20:28

Because nursery workers don't have a union.

I am (to coin a phrase) fucking delighted. It's a real win for our family into as a whole.

2boysand1princess · 04/01/2021 20:30

Yeah I’m pulling my 7month old out. Probably still have to keep paying though 🤦‍♀️

Silversun83 · 04/01/2021 20:31

@rhowton

It's because you cannot work effectively with under 4/5s at home with you. Nurseries are low spreaders, and statistically, staff members are younger. I'm pleased that I can continue to work!
I have a 2 and (reception) 4 year old. I can't work effectively at home with either of them yet reception is shut.. And I would say that was the case for most of primary school to be honest..

And also, there was actually more of an outbreak at my 2-year-old's nursery than my 4-year-old's school last term (where they had two isolated cases).

Welikebeingcosy · 04/01/2021 20:31

I'm sooo relieved too but also surprised as I was expecting to be not allowed to take her in.

annevonkleve · 04/01/2021 20:32

I think there will be a lot of parents who are very very grateful indeed that nurseries are staying open.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/01/2021 20:33

I’m so happy!!!!

Ihaveoflate · 04/01/2021 20:33

Thank f**ck they are staying open.

I have never been so relieved to hear Boris speak!

funksoulmother · 04/01/2021 20:34

A number of nurseries are privately run, so they can continue to charge fees even if parents choose not to send their children.
They are not funded (for the most part) by taxpayers and many would really struggle/close for good if required to close for 6 weeks+. Plus furloughing staff would cost the government further.

There would also be a huge societal cost to closing nurseries - with many mothers leaving the workforce and further increases to fees once things return to “normality”.
Children under 4 require constant supervision, so personally support this.

Chill08 · 04/01/2021 20:34

I work at a nursery half of us are 40+. I'm absolutely lost for words that we are to stay open.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/01/2021 20:34

It’s not unsafe for children. It’s about spread 1000%!!! Wish people would understand this

elephantskiss · 04/01/2021 20:35

Delighted. I wasn't ready for another breakdown trying to work from home with a toddler to look after simultaneously. There have been no cases at our nursery all year so they're doing something right. Not infallible, but I wouldn't say it's an extremely high risk to send them in, whereas I KNOW how risky it is on several levels to keep them home while working.

BettyOBarley · 04/01/2021 20:35

Have to say I'm glad for DS that he can still go on an afternoon (am presuming his school nursery will be shut even though it's early years). I am in two minds though as he only finished isolation on 19th Dec after 1 case in his nursery turned to 5 children and 3 staff within days.

Somethingvague · 04/01/2021 20:36

I am so grateful. I was dreading it and don't know how my mental health would have coped.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 04/01/2021 20:37

I understand parents feeling relieved but my mum works in a nursery and I’m really worried about her. She’s not CEV but is 60 and not in the best of health. It is a concern but she can’t afford not to work!

rumandbiscuits · 04/01/2021 20:37

I feel the same. It's either safe for children or isn't. Why is it ok for early years but not primary? My LG is due to start pre-school tomorrow which I am already anxious about but now I'm wondering what to do for the best. The alternative is have her off with me whilst I work from home which isn't going to go down well. I'm also 25 weeks pregnant and struggling to work/parent to the best of my ability as it is never mind with both of those things combined!
Lifeispassingby · 04/01/2021 20:38

I know many nurseries including mine hat don’t charge for parents keeping children off or self isolating. We had over half children off today as schools were closed in my area (due to tier 4 not union issues) and the local authority have told us that we cannot claim funding for these children. If this remains the case we will close permanently as will many others. We are an outstanding nursery and are full until September 2022, what will these parents do?

MyLifeNow20 · 04/01/2021 20:39

I am an Early Years practitioner and am so upset by this. We cope with snot, sneazing, sick, blood and not a thought for us. I am a single parent and have to send my child to school so I can carry on working. Its disgusting

Ilovegreentomatoes · 04/01/2021 20:39

So screw the staff eh? I'm disgusted at boris to leave the staff as cannon fodder it is spreading in nurseries it just saves the government having to provide furlough and funding for nurseries.

user1488819536 · 04/01/2021 20:39

I actually cried. I work outdoors, in the summer he came with me but he cant spend 12 hours out in the freezing cold every day.

MyLifeNow20 · 04/01/2021 20:39

Schools are closed, its not safe FFS

triceratops12 · 04/01/2021 20:39

I am very very pleased. However the only reason nurseries are open is because they don't want to fund them shutting.

Moonbabyskalimba · 04/01/2021 20:39

Thank Christ for this!
